The dating culture in Chile – what it’s like to date a Chilean

Dating a Chilean man, or even dating a Latino man, is a real treat if the features above are anything to go by. And while it is important to understand the man, you also need to appreciate the effect of Chilean dating culture on your experience.

Below are five key points that you have to prepare yourself for.

1. PDA is a part of the package, so get with the program.

Public displays of affection are a common sight in the streets of Chile. You can bet that your guy is used to it and expects you to be okay with it.

2. If you date the man, you date the clan. So prepare yourself for a lot of family dinners.

In Chilean culture, it is normal for relationships to advance quite quickly. Don’t be surprised when your guy invites you to a family dinner after a couple of weeks of dating. Family dinners are very popular, so expect to go to MANY of them.

3. Time is an abstract concept, and he will probably be just as late as you are.

Another quite common aspect of the Chilean culture is the fact that the people aren’t very punctual. So, you are likely not the only one who will be late for dates.

4. Possessiveness and jealousy are the norms, and these men simply cannot stand you having close male friends.

You should definitely expect a bit of jealousy from these guys. Having close guy friends is an unusual concept in their country and you might have to calm your guy down every now and then.

5. Morality is valued, but they still know how to have fun.

Chile is a religious country, but that doesn’t mean its people don’t enjoy a good time. Partying until dawn is nothing unusual to these folks.

Anyway, the other day there was a guy, and I may or may not have been kissing said guy. Said guy is so attractive, that I'm almost nervous to be kissing him, because, as we all know, when you're kissing really attractive people, you're thinking to yourself:

Enough tongue?

Too much tongue?

How can I spice this up?

If I spice it up, he'll think I'm a freak.

But if I don't, he'll think I'm boring.

…Why do men have so much god damn facial hair?!

So here I am, with said attractive man, and then it happens.

I see that his neck is bleeding. And I mean red, oozy, fresh bleedy vampire blood.

I gasp.

He looks at me, like, “What?!?!”

Then, I look upward, and see that his forehead is bleeding, too.

I gasp again.

And then I see blood spilling all over his shirt.

And I realize what has happened.

He's not bleeding. I am.

Haven't had a bloody nose in nearly a decade, yet here I am, with only THE MOST GORGEOUS MAN WHO HAS EVER BEEN IN MY PRESENCE and suddenly–I GET A BLOODY NOSE.

Seriously, universe?

That said, I wish that were the weirdest part of the date.

Because dating here in Chile? Is inherently weird overall.

Allow me to make a big, giant blanket statement that may or may not be fair and say that…Chileans suck at it.

For those of you who don't know, I live part-time in Chile. And yes, gorgeous is a Chilean.

I'm constantly frustrated here, because “dating” seems to consist of, “Hey, what are you up to tonight? How 'bout I come over and we'll drink some pisco?”

And to me, THAT IS NOT A DATE, BRO.

Dates involve me. And you. And my sexiest outfit. Some place public. Partly for safety. Partly because it's just WHAT YOU DO. Preferably with a drink that costs more than $3 for the entire bottle. Because if you want me to take you seriously as a man? You should probably take me seriously as a woman.

It isn't about having a man spend money on me–I could care less about that. It's about the experience. The setting. The formality. The respect. And the acknowledgment that this is actually a date and not some lame attempt at “friends with benefits,” which I will never, ever do, cross my heart and hope to die.

Because if you're really into me, you won't want to just be friends. And anything less than “really into me” isn't worthy of my time.

So as a result, I've been left with the impression that Chileans suck at dating. Mostly because they don't date. They hang out. And then I get bitter about it, because it leaves me feeling like they're just trying to have their cake and eat it, too. And that doesn't fly.

And then the other day I realized that–you know what?–for once in my life, I'm probably being a bit too hard on someone.

I'm viewing the situation as a North American would, and not, perhaps, like a Chilean would.

I thought back to a Chilean friend of mine, who used to frustrate me, because we only ever would go and hang out with his friends in their apartments–we'd never meet anyone out for a drink, or do anything that was, to me, remotely interesting. And I remember him telling me that the reason is because, to them, it's more intimate that way. There's more opportunity for conversation. And it's an honor to be invited into someone's home. Chileans LOVE going to one another's homes and spending time together that way.

And then, of course, there are the financials. At an average salary of $600/month, it's no wonder no one's hitting the town.

So I'm left wondering if, perhaps, this could be why hanging out at someone's apartment as a “date” might be more acceptable here. It's a cultural thing. Either that, or I'm really striking the hell out.

But at the end of the day, regardless of the reason, what it comes down to is expectations.

We've all got 'em.

In this case, there are certain cultural expectations at play, for both parties involved. And when an expectation on either end is broken, it hinders things. Maybe it just puts a kink in them, or maybe it's a deal breaker altogether, but regardless, when there's a misalignment of expectations, there's gonna be trouble. Glass could fly. Not saying that I've thrown any glass objects, or anything. Wink.

So I was pondering this while packing for the U.S., and I began to think about just how much expectations affect how we do business. Especially for freelancers and independent business owners.

You're disappointed in someone you've hired, because you didn't expect there to be that much of a learning curve.

You aren't happy with the way your eBook design turned out, because you expected them to know what you'd like.

Your client isn't satisfied with the final product–what expectations did they have for the end result?–

And so on, and so on.

Expectations are important. They set the tone for everything. And most importantly, they influence how you and your work are perceived. And if that's the case, then it's a really good idea to be as up front as possible from the beginning–especially with new clients–and try to get all of the expectations out on the table–both theirs and yours.

I promise your business will improve because of it.

And, of course, hopping back to me and my North American dating expectations, I suppose this means is that I'll need to start ruthlessly interrogating Chilean men on the street.

Did I say interrogating? I meant interviewing.

Because while I might not be happy about the “hang out date,” at least I'll have a better shot at understanding it. And if I understand it, I'll be far less likely to feel like a whore. And if I feel less like a whore, then I will be in a better mood. And if I'm in a better mood, I will probably start giving to charity or some shit. And if I start giving to charity, then obviously I will fall in love with some little Ethiopian girl that I will adopt and name Olivia. Except I won't really name her Olivia, because it reminds me of that show, Fringe. And I don't want to be thinking of supernatural oddities every time I yell out to my daughter, who doesn't even exist. So no Olivia. But maybe Nadia. Pronounced like “Nau” as in “naughty,” and “dee” and “uh.” Nau – dee – uh.

See? Things are coming together already.

And to top it off, if all that stuff happens, I will also probably get another shot with Sir Hottie, who will most like arrive wearing a raincoat, as to avoid getting soaked with my blood.

But he really shouldn't worry.

Next time, I'll be armed with peroxide.

Apparently, you never know when you might get a blood stain.

Especially when all you wanted to do was come over, drink a $3 bottle of pisco, and chill with only the most amazing American chick you've ever met.

If only the bitch would learn how to kiss.

Back in February, my friend Kyle posted the most offensive blog I’ve read thus far this year! Actually, as you’ll see, it wasn’t really HER sentiments that offended but rather, the sentiments of random weirdos who contact her via her blog (unfortunately one of the pitfalls of blogging is that you’re “out there” in the cyber world and anyone, anywhere can contact you to say pretty much anything). In short, her blog post contains clips of emails she received from certain people stating how the only reason any Chilean man would consider dating an American girl would be for “purely sexual reasons.” And that mostly, Chileans want to “try Gringas” in the same way, he states, that one would want to test drive a new model car. Then there’s the mention that only women who have zero luck in the States run off to South America to try their hand at love, but that too will backfire since men here treat women pretty much the same way they did in the 1800s. Pretty much at ANY moment the “true colors” of Chilean men will come out and WHAM, SLAP, BAM! Abusive husbands!

Don’t believe me? Click on the link and read her blog for yourself then get back to me (or her) about how appalled you are. (If you aren’t appalled, step away from the computer and away from my blog.)

In 8 days I’m going to be married and as I’m writing my vows (or attempting to do so because I’m failing miserably) every so often I’ve remembered this particular blog entry and now I’m seriously thinking of each and every Chilean man I’ve met who has married a non-Chilean woman – my own Chilean man as well – and what motivates them to marry us or have a serious relationship with us. And as far as I can tell, neither the man nor the woman in each scenario is anything less than awesome in their own right.

I’ll speak of the women first since as a woman, I’ve got more material. To begin with, I don’t know a single non-Chilean woman who lives here that has come “running” from her home country in order to desperately find love here in Chile. Having made the move from the US to Chile less than a year ago, I can attest that there is no such thing as merely “running to” Chile. It’s not easy for us here, even if we have found love! Some American women I’ve met don’t even speak Spanish fluently yet they still manage to make their lives as best they can here. These type of women, in general, are not those who run away from something but in my opinion, run towards something!

In my own experience I believe that the women I’ve met here, myself included, are courageous women who have their head on straight and who know what they want and who go after it. We’re not the kind of women who sit around and cry “woe is me” about having a long distance love, but who pick up and go to see where destiny and fate take us. Further, many of these women initially came to Chile on study abroad programs when they were very, very young – even before love was ever an option in Chile! They left their comfy college surroundings, the light fare of everyday (or every other day) partying to trek to this land at the end of the world and to live with a random Chilean family (random at the time, mind you.) Hello – guts!!! Excuse me, but I know very few Chilean women – or women in general – who have done something like that.

In addition, these women all have jobs here and many are on the road to long-term careers. They’ve made friends, maneuvered their way through bureaucracy (and trust me, Chile has lots) and on top of that, we constantly prove ourselves to the fellow Chileans to counter any pre-conceived notion they may have about Gringas. Whatever that may be, we have to constantly fight to have them remove those stigmas from their minds and to look at US as individuals, not as part of a whole.

In short, the non-Chilean woman who finds herself in this narrow country next to a Chilean man is NOT weak-willed or running away or insecure or shy. We’re not full of issues that can “explain” why we’re here in the first place and we’re not the kind of women who will conform to what any society or culture says of us and how things “should” be. At least, this is my view of the women – myself included – I see. I see go-getters; I see strong-willed; I see adapting; I see adventurous; I see respectful; I see women who literally go to the ends of the Earth for love… And I’m sorry, but Chilean women do NOT hold the official, exclusive license on these attributes (don’t mind me and my unabashed use of work-speak!)

So then I ask you (particularly those dumb asses who posted on Kyle’s blog), what kind of Chilean man marries such a woman?

A ROCK STAR Chilean man, that’s who.

The man who prefers a strong, unique, adventurous, determined, committed and hard-working woman is not the kind of man who would even be interested in dominating such a woman! The man next to us is just as strong, just as determined and takes pride in having a partner he can be on par with.

What if I were so bold, so controversial so as to say that the man who chooses to be with a Gringa isn’t interested in Chilean women in the first place? I say this because I take G as an example who was once married to the quintessential Chilean woman back when he himself was SO NOT who he is today. And today, as a bad ass in his career, a guy who has his act together, confident and engaging he tells me that in general (GENERAL, people) Chilean women as partners bore him. Hello!!! BORE HIM. Then again, my Chilean guy is SO NOT typical, it only makes sense that he and I are together. In fact, we’re so made for each other, we first determine what is standard or “envasado” and we request the exact opposite – almost always.

In the end, there are all kinds of women out there, Chilean and not, as is the case with men.

But being 8 days away from getting married, I’m happy to conclude that the kind of man who marries this Gringa is – simply put – amazing. What makes him unique is that he loves me for the bizarre mix of customs I myself am. Being “American” but with “Chilean” ancestry and family, I’m a smorgasbord of characteristics and ideologies (some good, some annoying) and regardless of being Gringa or Chilean or what have you, he makes me always want to be a better version of me.

Here’s hoping I do the same for him!

The family plays a prominent role in Chilean society as well as in the day-to-day life of most Chileans. The is the core family unit in Chile. However, bonds are often quite close to extended family members. One's family tends to have a major influence on the individual and often acts as a reference point throughout their life. There is an expectation placed on the individual to be loyal and committed to their family by putting the interests of the family above their own.

Close-knit family relations provide Chileans with a network of security and support, particularly in times of need. This is especially relevant to the lower classes; the extended family acts as an indispensable source of support for coping with hardships during difficult times. Extended families will frequently visit each other and celebrate major occasions such as a wedding or birthday. Relatives will also visit each other regularly if they live in close proximity to one another. At times, the family unit may transcend bloodlines to include close family friends. For example, children will often be taught to refer to their parents' friends as ‘uncle' or ‘aunt'.

While couples are expected to establish their own households, they usually make efforts to remain in close contact with members of their extended family. Young people tend to stay at home until they get married or are required to move to another town for employment reasons. Yet parental authority remains even after children have an independent life. Indeed, children are generally expected to consult their parents on important life choices such as their education and marriage. Grandparents also have considerable authority in family affairs. Either by necessity or by choice, grandparents (especially those who are widows) tend to live with the family of one of their daughters or sons. If their parents live in a separate household, married children will usually visit their parents on the weekend and call them regularly on the phone.

Childcare

The primary carers of Chilean children are their mothers. However, families in a higher socioeconomic class often count on the full-time support of ‘empleadas domésticas’ or ‘empleadas del hogar’ (‘domestic workers’), who usually live in the family home. Some domestic workers known as ‘puerta afuera’ (‘outside the door’) will stay during the day and work from Monday to Saturday, returning to their own home in the evenings. While tending to the children, they may also cook and clean for the household. Within lower class families and indigenous families, it is typically the older brothers and sisters who care for toddlers, as their parents often work outside the home.

The Household Structure and Gender Roles

Formerly in most homes, men held more authority over women. While the father used to be in charge of decision-making, the mother also had considerable influence over decisions. This has changed in recent years with an increase in the economic independence of women (regardless of their socioeconomic class). Many are living alone or having children out of wedlock.

is a prevalent attitude throughout Chilean society. Under this cultural standard, men are expected to be masculine, proud, self-reliant and dominant. An effect of this attitude is visible in the differing expectations placed upon men and women in regard to their social circles after marriage. For example, married men grant themselves a high level of freedom while expecting their wives to stay at home. At times, Chilean men may also become jealous and protective towards their wives.

Younger generations are challenging the perception of traditional household structures and attitudes. People are increasingly accepting of alternatives to the traditional family such as unmarried couples, single mothers, gay couples and couples without children. The younger generation of men are also making an effort to share domestic responsibilities and support their wives’ careers. Indeed, in contemporary Chile, there is a growing tendency for the relationship between the husband and wife to be premised on reciprocity, with the man assisting his wife and vice versa. Women are also challenging the mentality by focusing on their independence.

Dating and Marriage

Chileans will typically begin dating by the age of 16. Group dating is common among the youth, whereby a group of single men and single women will organise an outing, with the hopes of forming a romantic partnership. Couples will often date for one to three years before deciding to become engaged. Since Chile is a class-conscious society, people will generally marry persons from a similar social and educational background.

Living together before marriage was once quite rare. Nowadays, cohabitation before marriage is more common and is legally recognised in Chile. In 2015, the Chilean parliament passed the Civil Union Law, which can be applied in both heterosexual and homosexual couples. This law allows couples living together to have the same civil rights as married couples.

For many Chileans, marriage is seen as one of the most significant rites of passage. There is a tendency to look at those who are single in their 30s with slight pity or disapproval. Men tend to marry at the age of 22 onwards, while women will often marry between 18 and 23. However, this average age of marriage has increased and Chileans tend to marry in their early 30s. Although a civil ceremony is sufficient for a marriage to be officially recognised, most Chileans also choose to have a church ceremony. Although Chile was one of the last countries in the world to legalise divorce (2004), it is still quite uncommon for couples to legally separate. This is in part due to the influence of the opinions of the Catholic Church.

There are lots of reasons to visit Chile. A stunning and one of the most diversified landscapes is one of them. In about 4000km of coast offering the driest desert of the earth (the Atacama desert), a region called Lake District with volcanos, deep blue lakes and silent green forests and awe-inspiring Patagonia with its rain forests, fjords and glaciers, you might well find your very own piece of paradise.

But apparently that alone is not attracting enough tourists. The chilean ministry for tourism has recently shifted their focus on a very special group of visitors: us! The young globetrotter, yearning to discover the world and its wonders and maybe to fall in love with a local. Check out this pretty funny promotional video called “Chile is yours“:

As I have spent almost two years living in Chile, I was able to make quite a few experiences with Chilean guys. … or if you already found your handsome Chilean but you struggle with some cultural / language problems, then continue reading carefully. I have a few tips for you to deal with them. I hope they will help you!

• Don’t wonder why your boy always wants to stay at your place. A lot of Chileans live with their parents until they get married. That’s also the reason why he always wants to take you to the park.

• If he decides to introduce you to his parents – which is first a real big step, it means he really likes you! – don’t expect to sleep in one room together, if you are staying over night. Chile is catholic. It introduced divorce only in 2004 – as the last country in the world! Habits won’t change that fast, so enjoy your night alone in his little sister’s bedroom next door.

• He’s taking you out, you’re having a great evening and you are ending up in – a motel! That’s normal. For reasons we already know he can’t take his girl home, so Chileans have very often their first, second and third intimite encounters at a motel. Don’t be surprised if you have trouble finding a free room – there are plenty, you just have to keep looking!

Tips on vocabulary:

pololo / polola = boyfriend / girlfriend (the Spanish word “novio/novia” means in Chile that you are already engaged!)

Estoy pololeando = I have a boyfriend/girlfriend

po = you will always hear that at the end of a phrase, but it doesn’t really mean anything. It’s an abbreviated form of “pues” used to add emphasis.

piola = relaxed, calm, quiet

bacán = perfect, very good, the best thing / person

huevón / huevona = a whole book could be written about this very common word – it was once described as Chile’s best addition to the Spanish language, but long story short: it means something like “dude”

cachar = to get it, to understand sth., it derives from the English word “to catch” -> Cachai? = Do you understand?

gallo / galla = guy

gringo / gringa = foreigner, usu. from Northern America, Europe or Australia. Used negatively, neutrally as well as positively

guata = belly

guagua = baby

micro = local bus

al tiro = immediately

choro = cool, neat

ya = okay

la raja = amazing, excellent

What are Chilean Men Like
