8 Tips for Dating a Taller Woman

I know a lot of guys who think twice about dating a taller woman. But my first long-term boyfriend was 5’3″ and I always thought he was hot. Standing three inches shorter than me, I wasn’t bothered by his height at all.

It’s easy to get caught up in what society may think. Problem is, you make your dating pool so much smaller when you do that. If you follow my blog, you know I strongly recommend MegaDating — a tried-and-true technique for increasing your dating volume and ultimate success with women.

To MegaDate, dating taller girl, you need to have access to a large pool of women (I’d say, join no less than five dating sites to start with). But if you decide against dating a taller woman, you cut down your choices by a huge percentage once again… after all that work!

To stay competitive in the game of dating is hard — so don’t limit yourself! Instead of getting weird about dating a taller woman, learn to embrace it, dating taller girl. Whether you’re a short guy or an average-sized guy who prefers to date women shorter than yourself, you’ll feel much better about your choices once you dating taller girl over your hangups about height.

To help you do that, I’ve put together this list of eight tips for dating a taller woman. This includes practical advice as well as some deeper points to reflect on that’ll hopefully change your mind.

Tips for Dating a Taller Woman

1. Cultivate Your Looks

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. You’re hesitant to date a taller woman because you dating taller girl you won’t look “manly” enough to her.

True, you can’t control what another person thinks. But you definitely have control over the way you present yourself. Maybe she’s not into shorter guys but you can distract from this or even neutralize it by playing up your other assets visually.

Make your clothing a priority. Not exactly someone who’s into fashion? Try a dating taller girl clothing service like Trunk Club or Dating taller girl Fix that’ll send you coordinated pieces to try on at home, dating taller girl. You’ll save time and get styled by an expert.

They’ll send you stuff that’s both affordable and on-trend, giving you a cooler look that’s more current. Not only that, but you’ll look a lot better than the other dudes out there who don’t bother to dress well.

Also, stay well-groomed. Consider your options when dating taller girl comes to facial hair. Maybe you’re the type that could pull off a hipster type beard, or maybe a shadow or goatee would work better with your jawline. Look at some photos and see what you can create for yourself, dating taller girl. Check out YouTube for tutorials if needed. Also, take care of any skin issues (acne, discoloration) with topical treatments.

Finally — this is dating site in usa, but well worth it — think about getting into better shape. A short guy who’s fit is still miles ahead of a taller guy who’s out of shape. Investing in your fitness, combined with your grooming and clothing choices will make you much more competitive in the dating pool.

2. Don’t Exaggerate Your Height Too Much

dating a taller woman 3

A lot of guys do this, and I understand why: One study found that a whopping 48.9 percent of women restrict their online dating searches to men who were taller than them.

Even if you didn’t know the exact numbers, you probably figured that out from experience. So, if you’re a short guy, I can see why you’d exaggerate your height in your online dating profile. I just wouldn’t do it too much.

If you lie about your height more than a couple of inches, she’ll definitely notice that as soon she meets you. Let’s say you list yourself dating taller girl six feet tall when you’re really 5’9”. Everyone knows what six feet looks like. Most likely, she’s had a brother, dad, past boyfriend, or many people who were that height or very close to it. So, once she sees you, she’ll instantly compare you in her mind to someone else who’s six feet and know you’re lying.

At that point, you look dishonest. While most of us know guys exaggerate their height, number one free dating site don’t make it ridiculous. We’re not blind!

On the other hand, what if you were honest about your height? It might kick you dating taller girl of a lot of women’s online searches, but if you’re looking for a long-term relationship, the ones left without height filters might be more genuine.

3. Know Your Value

Height is something that you can’t change — so why not dating taller girl your limiting beliefs around discreet dating approval site instead? What benefits do you have in being shorter? Can you work your way through crowds faster? Qualify for child passes on admission? Still trick-or-treat in a costume?

Okay, I’m having a little fun with this, but you get my point. Look at the positives and own your height. After all, it will set you apart from other men, which is always a good thing.

The 100 Reasons Why Exercise

On a serious note, if your feelings of self-worth are affected by your height, try doing the following exercise. It’s called “100 Reasons Why.” The rules are simple: Make a list of 100 reasons why you deserve your dream girl, regardless of your height. This helps to boost confidence and remind you of your value. No matter how much taller she is, you still have a lot to bring dating taller girl the table.

4. Sell Yourself

Once you know what you have to offer, find ways to work those things into the conversation when you’re with her. This doesn’t mean you should brag. It just means being direct and forthcoming about your achievements and good qualities… in a super subtle, yet honest way.

Go back to your 100 Reasons Why exercise and maybe pick out recent successes that pertain to your work. Let’s say your business has been taking off or you just became an executive at your company. Find ways to mention those things indirectly, dating taller girl.

You might talk about how hard it is to manage your time now that sales are through the roof and the business has you working around the clock. Or how surprised you were when your new dating taller girl threw you a birthday party in the office.

Do this in a setting that’s outward-focused — maybe wait till the second date when you’re out hiking or at a ball game — and it will feel much more low-key and natural.

5. Own Your Masculine Energy

dating a taller woman 2

When you’re dating a taller woman and possibly feeling strange about it, the best thing you can do is really own your masculine energy, dating taller girl. What does this mean?

Cultivate the qualities of an “alpha male.” The alpha male knows what he wants, is confident about who he is, and will not allow other people’s opinions to distract him from his goals, dating taller girl. He’s also considerate, respectful, and assertive.

Step into your masculine energy when you interact with your taller dates and see if that doesn’t change the vibe between you. It should, dating taller girl. Here are some quick tips for doing that:

When you ask her out, always use a TDL (time, date, location).

Do not give in to the temptation to ask her “When are you free?” or saying, “We should hang out sometime” when you want to take her out. Be upfront and clear by giving her specifics and making it obvious that you’re asking for a date. See my post on how to use a TDL for more on this.

Be chivalrous.

Not only does chivalry make a woman feel special, but it also makes her feel cared for and safe when she’s with you. This is actually a huge “alpha” trait. Assert your masculinity by doing things like paying for the bill, dating taller girl, giving her your jacket if she gets cold, and walking her to her car or Uber.

Help her solve problems.

A guy who can fix things is like gold. Maybe she’s struggling with an issue at work, dating taller girl, needs a repair done in her apartment, or can’t seem to find some information she’s looking for. Step in and try to help, dating taller girl. She’ll love you for it. Do this enough times, and your height difference won’t mean much to her anymore. (Hopefully, you can get over it, too!)

6. Find Role Models and Emulate Them

There are a lot of celebrities who are short and are dating taller women. So, consider how you can shift your beliefs by using role models as examples. Tom Cruise is a classic case — he’s always dated taller babes. Employ some of what he uses to come across as hyper-masculine. Copy his body language and imagine yourself as an action star.

Comedians like Kevin Hart have also learned to make fun of their height. You can do the same. Develop a good sense of humor about it like they do. You might even try a comedy, improv, dating taller girl, or creative writing class to really sharpen your skills so your sense of humor overrides any feelings about the height difference she may have. At the same time, remember…

7. Don’t Be Negative About It

No matter what, don’t keep complaining about the fact that she’s taller. It may be tempting to compare yourself to other couples when you’re out or make sarcastic jokes about her height, but just don’t do it.

First, when you use humor, dating taller girl, make sure it’s self-deprecating (insulting your date is never good!) and actually funny (I wasn’t kidding about those improv classes). Otherwise, you’ll seem negative and possibly ruin a good thing.

This is especially important when she wears heels. Tell her she’s beautiful when she wears heels. Don’t say, “Can you wear flats? I dating taller girl want you to be that much taller than me.” That’s just a sign of insecurity. If dating taller girl truly know your value, it won’t bother you if the woman you’re dating is an Amazon woman towering above you. You’ll know dating taller girl the man dating taller girl that she looks sexy.

8. Enjoy the Advantages

Dating a taller woman has tons of advantages. Don’t believe me? Let’s just look at a few of them.

First of all, If she’s very tall, dating taller girl, some guys might avoid dating her for that reason. That sucks for her… but it’s good for you since there will be less competition, dating taller girl. So don’t be afraid to approach her.

You guys could also probably share clothes if you’re an average height guy and she’s a tall woman (or, if you’re a short guy and she’s taller than you). Hey, you might laugh, but this comes in handy! How many times did you give up a sweatshirt to a girl and wished you hadn’t because you’re freezing your ass off? Well, now you can do the same thing and wear hers.

One more: If you drink, she can more likely keep up with you. Again, if she’s a tall woman, she can handle more — or if she’s average height woman and just taller than you, she could still match your pace pretty well, dating taller girl. If you’re still partying, this is obviously a plus.

Dating a Taller Woman Wrap-Up

Even if dating a taller woman is a little uncomfortable at first, I’d say go for it. There’s no reason to limit your options by letting your insecurities get in the way. In fact, dating taller girl, if you do feel insecure about it, you might have bigger problems anyway.

Confidence always wins the day when it comes to dating, so if a woman’s height can knock you off your game so easily, eventually that lack of confidence will hurt you in other ways.

'Tall Girl 2,' Zendaya and Tom Holland and the dating taller girl around tall women dating shorter men

Spoiler alert: The following post discusses the ending of Netflix's first "Tall Girl" movie, so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.

Tall women don't often see themselves or their dating taller girl plights represented.

Netflix's "Tall Girl 2" is streaming Friday, the sequel to the streaming service's 2019 film about a 6-foot-3 teenage girl who falls for an dating taller girl taller foreign exchange student before realizing she's in love with her much shorter best friend.

“I’ve always had a crush on her, but society has deemed it socially unacceptable for a tall girl to date a short guy," Dunkleman (Griffin Gluck) says in "Tall Girl 2" of his girlfriend, Jodi (Ava Michelle), reflecting on why it took so long for the two to get together.

Jodi's journey to self-love and finding a romantic partner in "Tall Girl" is reflective of how many tall women feel when it comes to dating: that their height complicates their journey to find love.

'Tall Girl':What the Netflix movie gets right (and wrong) about being a teenage girl over 6 feet

Jack Dunkleman (Griffin Gluck) and Jodi Kreyman (Ava Michelle) find they make a good couple, regardless of their height difference, in Netflix's "Tall Girl 2."

Take, for instance, the real-life example of Ali Jackson, a 34-year-old New York City-based dating coach. She's known on social media by her brand name, Finding Mr. Height, a playful reference to her 5-foot-11 stature.

It's not that Jackson hasn't been open to going on a date with a man shorter than her – it's that shorter men, in her experience, often vocalize their discomfort with dating a taller woman.

"I wish that I didn't care," she says of the height of potential suitors, blaming social stigmas that dating taller girl women should be "small and dainty" while men are "big and protect us."

"Not only am I just predisposed by everything around us as we're growing up and learning what we're attracted to, but also the men that I'm dating have issues with it," she adds. "I can work on myself and be OK with it as much as I want, but I have found that (some of) the guys are not."

Sometimes, the men Jackson meets off dating apps round up their height and are then surprised or upset when she ends up being taller than them.

"Society tells men that being small is bad and not masculine," she adds. "And so I have often found that the guys that I date are even more sensitive to being smaller than me than I am sensitive to being bigger than them. … There might be some guys who are totally cool with it, but the vast majority are not and I'm going to protect my emotional safety."

'Spider-Man: No Way Home':Tom Holland credits Zendaya with helping him navigate fame

Zendaya proudly towers (in heels!) over Tom Holland at the red carpet premiere of "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

Tall women are rare: The average adult woman's height in the U.S .falls between 5-foot-1.3 and 5-foot-4.1 according to a 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. So many search for mirrors of themselves in media, of which there aren't a ton. But there are celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Kevin and Eniko Hart, dating taller girl, and Zendaya and Tom Holland who have helped increase visibility in real life. For some, "Tall Girl" was the first time they saw their own height experiences on screen.

"I identified with feeling outside the norm," Emily McBride, 26, says of the dating taller girl movie. "But I think something that dating taller girl me was it felt like in the end she was (only) validated because a guy liked her."

At 6-foot-1 – not including the platform Doc Martens or other heeled shoes she's prone to wear – McBride doesn't view anyone's height as a "deal breaker." She dates a "pretty equal mix" of shorter and taller men, dating taller girl, and has only been out with shorter women, but would be open to dating women taller than her, too – she's just "so used to being the tallest woman in the room."

"As I've gotten older and (am) coming dating taller girl my own sexuality and realizing I'm queer, dating taller girl, framing relationships from that lens has changed my perspective on height," she says. "It's made me more accepting – obviously, it would be super-rare if I meet a girl that's taller than me, but height has become even less prioritized in my mind."

Queer dating is "just dating taller girl laid back and there isn't this weird kind of patriarchal 'the man has to be stronger and larger' weighing on it," McBride adds.

Emily McBride is 6-foot-1.

That patriarchal idea does have some bearing from a biological standpoint, says Gordon Gallup, an evolutionary psychologist at the University at Albany.

"Do women like tall men? The answer, cross culturally the world over, is yes," he says. "Women tend to preferentially date and eventually mate with men (who) are taller than they are."

To dating taller girl women who do feel strongly that they want their partner to be taller, Jackson notes that's OK from a social standpoint ("You're allowed to be attracted to whatever you want to be attracted to"), but there's a right way to go about it.

"If your dating app profile says like, 'No short guys,' that's rude," she says. "You can have your preference without belittling the other people that don't fit within that preference."

And plenty of women stress that finding someone they love is most important, no matter their height.

Wendy Zipes Hunter, second from right, stands at 6-foot-1 – the shortest in her family.

Wendy Zipes Hunter met her husband more than 30 years ago at a party, dating taller girl. At 6-foot-1, she was the tallest woman there; at 6-foot-6, he was the tallest man. Now, they share three sons in their 20s, who all stand between 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-10.

Years later, Hunter still believes there's "a little stigma" when it comes to dating taller girl differences in relationships. She's enthused to see these recent examples of confident tall women in media.

"It does help normalize things in the world," Dating taller girl says. "Tall girls should not be limited to just date tall guys. Same thing for shorter men. If they're attracted to a tall woman, go for it. It's such a silly thing when you think about it – it's just a height difference. That's all it is."

‘Being tall is seen as being less “feminine” – incorrectly so’: Taller women share how they navigate the world of dating with height stereotypes

tom holland and zendeya on colourful background

The world of dating can be a tough place to traverse – what with so many apps to keep up with, ghosting, Covid anxiety and more.

But it can be even harder if you feel like your dating pool is dating taller girl by the height of potential matches.

This is something often felt by a lot of taller women – mainly because of society’s problematic stereotypes.

Tom Holland recently spoke about these ‘ridiculous’ relationship stereotypes himself – remarking it’s stupid to assume that his and Zendaya’s height difference would ever be an issue.

Essentially, the issue stems from the view that men need to be taller and dating taller girl need to be shorter in a heterosexual relationship. This pressure makes couples that don’t fall into this ‘different the norm.’

This is something that frustrates Hollie-Anne, who says people feel like they have a right to comment on her and her partner’s heights.

She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘I’m 5ft 10 and my boyfriend is 5ft 8 and even the two inches difference has been enough for people to comment – usually on the fact I’m tall for a woman, and it makes me cringe.’

‘People always say I’m tall – as if they’re stating the obvious and like I don’t know it.’

Hollie-Anne is open to dating shorter men – but senses many don’t feel the same about taller women.

‘I’ve never had a problem dating shorter men – but found a lot were put off by my height,’ she adds.

‘On dating apps I’ve had men ask my height and then be put off by it. They’d assume I wouldn’t want to date someone shorter and just cut the conversation there and then.

‘Many used to ask if I wore heels – as if it was some big deal-breaker if I did. The truth was that I didn’t mind dating shorter men at all; I expected it being my height.’

Now, there’s no denying that being a shorter man is filled with its own challenges.

Men with shorter statures have spoken themselves about a lack of interest from others – something backed up by one study that found 48.9% of females said they would only date taller men.

Men have noted their shortness can have a detrimental impact dating taller girl their sex life. In fact, one study from Chapman University in California found that taller people tend to have more notches on their bedposts.

Some short men also feel the need to overcompensate by being excessively dominant or hostile in their interpersonal relationships – also known as ‘short man syndrome’ or ‘the Napoleon complex.’

But heterosexual dating is a two-way street. So what about those on the other side of the equation?

How are height stereotypes affecting taller women?

Amy, who is 5ft 11, says: ‘I think some men, dating taller girl, not all, might feel emasculated by tall women and also being tall or large isn’t seen as very “feminine.”

‘It is a lot harder to date when you’re a tall woman as being tall is seen as being less “feminine” – incorrectly so, but it is.

‘So it’s not feminine and not desirable or attractive – unless you’re a supermodel and a size six, but for your average person.

‘Being tall definitely affects how you feel when you meet new people – as it’s all about making a good first impression.

‘And I think men – well, society and media in general (through the male gaze) – really idolise a really small and petite woman, dating taller girl.

‘So if you’re a tiny little thing, that’s seen as more attractive than someone who free professional dating site us tall or muscular – or seen as more feminine.’

Megan, who is 5ft 8, agrees that the idea that women need to be petite to be ‘feminine’ is dating taller girl problematic.

She says: ‘I think it’s people’s perception of what society thinks they should be that is the problem – e.g. women want to be dainty and small, men want to be big and tough.

‘So if you’re with someone who doesn’t make you feel that way, it’s dating taller girl width="594" height="396" src="https://metro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/GettyImages-1358259452.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&zoom=1&resize=594%2C396" alt="SiriusXM's Town Hall With The Cast Of Spider-Man: No Way Home">

Natalie, who is 5ft 11, says that height has always been important thing for her when it comes to dating and attraction – but perhaps only because she’s been made to feel this way by ‘accepted norms.’

‘I think a lot of that comes down to what society teaches us about how a couple is supposed to look, and I have likely internalised some of that,’ she explains.

‘I would find it hard to be with someone dating taller girl shorter than me because I would feel self-conscious – which I know is ridiculous, dating taller girl. It really shouldn’t matter.

‘Back when I was dating, I would find that men who were dating taller girl height or shorter would very rarely approach me, or they would make an awkward comment about my height.

‘It’s silly, but when there are already so many annoying things to think about when it comes to romantic matches, it’s just easier to go for someone taller than me so the height thing doesn’t need to be an issue.’

More: Relationships

Many taller women say they have to change their behaviour to avoid this ‘being an issue’ with men.

Megan, for example, always makes her height known to dating taller girl dates in advance – so was relieved when apps introduced the height function on profiles.

‘Before on dating apps I’d always make sure men knew my height before the date,’ she adds.

‘It’s a bit awkward to just add it into conversation – so having height listed on my profile removes the need to do that.’

Although, dating taller girl, she takes men’s heights with pinch of salt.

‘I appreciated when dating apps like Hinge brought in the height function – although you dating taller girl to subtract two inches from what men say to get the real height,’ she says.

While Amy adds that – if she was ever meeting someone for the first time – she would feel the need to wear flat shoes.

She says: ‘If I was going on a date with someone for the first time, and I didn’t know how tall they were, I’d probably wear flats, or close to flats – because I think some men, not all, but some might feel emasculated by tall women.’

Being self-conscious of height is even something Amy feels now, when she’s wearing heeled shoes with her partner.

‘If my partner and I go I feel self-conscious if I wear heels – even though he’s taller than me, by maybe an inch or two. But I still don’t want to feel like I’m towering above him,’ she adds.

Put simply, height difference stereotypes not only impact men, they’re a real struggle for taller women too – with many feeling the need to give a ‘head’s up’ to potential dates and change their footwear.

But ultimately, as Tom Holland summed up so well, dating taller girl, it’s society’s views on height that need to change – not the couples themselves.

Hopefully, the more we talk about why we hold these height prejudices, the better we will get at understanding and overcoming them.

Dating taller girl - think, that

Getty Images

1. I don't care if I'm taller than you. Being a tall girl is the shit. If I have heels on and you find yourself feeling short, remember that you should feel like a badass for being with a tall girl.

2. I love wearing heels so don't get weird when I do.

3. In fact, I get off on being taller than you, even though it might not happen very often. If you feel emasculated and let it show, I'm moving right along to a man who doesn't feel threatened by me.

4. In fact, I'm going to actively try to be taller than you. Especially if you're tall. Because I grew up being the tallest girl in the room and I used to feel awkward about it but now that I'm a grown-ass woman, I embrace it and you should too.

5. Yes, I have dated guys shorter than me. No, I don't make it a habit. And if you're way shorter than me, sorry, but I also have a limit on how short I'll go.

6. It's incredibly easy to find me in a crowd. So if we're at da club and one of us visits the bar, we'll make our way back to each other in no time.

7. People stare at me more. We Talls like to think this is because we're hot, but it's often because we're just really tall and gangly and inherently kind of awkward.

8. My skirt's not short. I just have really long legs. What falls just above the knee on another girl is going to look downright tiny on me but just accept this before we have dinner with your parents because there's nothing I can do about it and I love my skirts.

9. Don't tell me I look taller than I am. If I tell you I'm 5-foot-9, don't then furrow your brow and tell me I "look taller than that" because you just sound like you think I look like a freak.

10. I don't need you or your friends or anyone else to say, "I'm taller than you," when they're not. They can't bear the thought of anyone being taller than them because they're insecure. I don't comment on how they wear basketball jerseys to nice places, so.

11. I don't need your help as much as you think I do. Putting bags in the overhead bins on planes, reaching for stuff, etc. What can I say other than: I woke up like this.

12. It's going to be more awkward than not for you to pick me up in an attempted sweeping, movie-like romantic gesture. I'm tall — that makes me heavier than most petite girls. Plus, my legs are long and don't just lift easily and wrap around your waist like ribbons floating in the breeze.

13. I fit perfectly as your little spoon or big spoon. I go anywhere with no awkward genital/other body part alignment.

14. People will despise us at concerts. If you thought you were annoying solo at concerts, just wait until we go together.

15. We will fight over aisle seats on airplanes. "My ankles need to breathe." "No, MY ANKLES NEED TO BREATHE."

16. Holding hands is never uncomfortable. Because we're close enough in height that we don't have to walk 10 feet apart for it to feel remotely natural.

17. We can kiss more because you're at my level. When we dance cheek to cheek, we're probably actually, well, cheek to cheek.

18. I'll knock my head on low-hanging things before you do. Because when you let me go first, ladies being first and all, I'll test-drive the clearance level for you.

19. No one will take road trips with us if it involves them sitting in the back of our car. Because our seats will be so far back their knees will be at their chins. Unless, quite unlike us, they're ... short.

UPDATE: There is now some scientific evidence that even concludes that short men make better partners. So by all means, gentlemen, go forth and ignore society's small-minded trivialities.

The first question most strangers ask me is "How tall are you?" If I'm feeling charitable, I answer honestly: "6-foot-2." They often follow-up with, "Do you ever date shorter men?" Consider this my full answer.

First off: Yes, I have. Which makes me weird. The average woman is eight percent shorter than her male partner. In one survey, about half of collegiate men required their date to be shorter, while a monstrous nine of every ten women said they would only date a taller man. And online, it's even more brutal: Women can calculate how tall they are in their highest heels, add a few inches for good measure, and then filter out men who fall below that sum. Of course the ability to search for people who meet our criteria is part of the appeal of online dating. But while women say they have a "type"—they love bearded gingers or get off on guys in glasses—they don't filter out every man who doesn't meet those specific physical criteria. Height is different. It's a sweeping prejudice masquerading as sexual preference. When one guy changed his height on his OkCupid profile from his actual 5'4" to an average 5'9", his response rate nearly doubled.

Read: 10 Ways To Have Better Sex, According to Science

This is bullshit. Single people sign up for a half-dozen dating sites and apps in order to widen their pool, yet most won't break the height taboo. It needs to change. Men should date women who are taller than they are, and women should date shorter men. For chrissakes, I'm talking about all of us getting laid here! Only four percent of heterosexual couples feature a shorter man. Let's increase our odds.

Now, in order for you, a shorter man*, to circumvent this bullshit and convince wonderful taller women to date you, you have to understand why women feel this way. Let me explain.

* To be clear: You can be tall and still be shorter. I'm taller than 95 percent of American men.

Right now, many men incorrectly believe that women want a taller man for evolutionary reasons—to protect us and our offspring. But if you ask women, it's about feeling feminine. In Data: A Love Story, Amy Webb's memoir about online dating, she confesses she felt she needed a man who was at least five-ten. (Webb is five-six, making that requirement just one inch shy of the eight-percent average.) "I wanted someone to overpower me, who could wrap his entire body around me in a hug, but who could also throw me down on a bed and ravish me," she writes. "Someone who's smaller may be wonderful, but in my case he will never make me feel like he's in control." (To those of you who just thought Fuck that, I agree. I'll get there in a minute.)

Women have internalized the message that it's better for us to be smaller. This is essential to know—it's not just about shortness, but also skinniness. To be bigger than men is to worry that you'll turn them off. Webb found that it isn't just men lying about their height online, women do, too—to appear shorter. (With good cause: Women over six feet receive forty percent fewer messages on OkCupid than their 5'4" counterparts.) Ask any super-tall woman about her dateless teenage years and the number of times a well-meaning adult said to her, "The boys are just intimidated by you." Taller is mannish. Taller is… weird.

Getty Images

So how do we get over our collective height hangup? Tall women provide a natural test case. After all, it's nearly impossible for we amazons to find a partner who meets the classic 8-percent height differential, so we've had to get comfortable dating smaller men. If I hadn't, I would still be a virgin. So let's first take a basic lesson from the world of super-tall women: Do not approach a leggy lady and fucking open with "How tall are you?" Or some dumb joke about the weather up there. She will dismiss you. I've taken to giving my whiskey a single swirl, looking down my nose and saying slowly, "You are boring me. Go away."

A novel idea: Think of height like tits. You would never walk up to a woman and open with, "What's your bra size?" Even if her height is part of her appeal, wait until fifth-date post-coital bliss to say how much you love it.

Which brings us to your more general task: neutralizing her insecurity by conveying that bigger is sexy. That you love her in heels. That you don't feel like less of a man when you're with her. This is complicated stuff. Some of it boils down to you owning a more classic masculinity—going in for the kiss first, deciding the dinner location, simply being more assertive. But keep in mind that, because you're asking her to question gut-level beliefs about what she finds attractive, you need to be willing to broaden your own definition of what you find attractive—and convey to her that it does not contain the phrase "smaller than me."

Of course, women also have to be willing to check their own biases about short men. I consider short guys my natural allies and am constantly making the case to my female friends that they should stop fetishizing tall men. (When one friend narrowed her OkCupid search to men taller than six feet and then complained about a boring date with some guy built like an NBA player, I laughed in her face.) Here's how I figure it: If a man is comfortable with the fact that I'm taller, he's also likely to be comfortable with the fact that I'm competitive and outgoing and career-oriented. As in: It means he's a secure man.

Courtesy of Sequential Crush

Everyone, it is time to expect more. To go on even just one date with someone who falls outside of our eight-percent range, and to ask ourselves whether there's actually less chemistry there. To think of a world with all these new, gorgeous options. If you won't do it for yourself, try it for my sake. I'd really appreciate if we could all stop asking "How tall are you?" We're above it.

To MegaDate, you need to have access to a large pool of women (I’d say, join no less than five dating sites to start with). But if you decide against dating a taller woman, you cut down your choices by a huge percentage once again… after all that work!

To stay competitive in the game of dating is hard — so don’t limit yourself! Instead of getting weird about dating a taller woman, learn to embrace it. Whether you’re a short guy or an average-sized guy who prefers to date women shorter than yourself, you’ll feel much better about your choices once you get over your hangups about height.

You’re hesitant to date a taller woman because you think you won’t look “manly” enough to her.

True, you can’t control what another person thinks. But you definitely have control over the way you present yourself. Maybe she’s not into shorter guys but you can distract from this or even neutralize it by playing up your other assets visually.

Make your clothing a priority. Not exactly someone who’s into fashion? Try a subscription-based clothing service like Trunk Club or Stitch Fix that’ll send you coordinated pieces to try on at home. You’ll save time and get styled by an expert.

They’ll send you stuff that’s both affordable and on-trend, giving you a cooler look that’s more current. Not only that, but you’ll look a lot better than the other dudes out there who don’t bother to dress well.

Also, stay well-groomed. Consider your options when it comes to facial hair. Maybe you’re the type that could pull off a hipster type beard, or maybe a shadow or goatee would work better with your jawline. Look at some photos and see what you can create for yourself. Check out YouTube for tutorials if needed. Also, take care of any skin issues (acne, discoloration) with topical treatments.

Finally — this is long-term, but well worth it — think about getting into better shape.

Let’s say you list yourself as six feet tall when you’re really 5’9”.

While most of us know guys exaggerate their height, just don’t make it ridiculous. We’re not blind!

On the other hand, what if you were honest about your height? It might kick you out of a lot of women’s online searches, but if you’re looking for a long-term relationship, the ones left without height filters might be more genuine.

3. Know Your Value

Height is something that you can’t change — so why not change your limiting beliefs around height instead?

No matter how much taller she is, you still have a lot to bring to the table.

Find ways to mention those things indirectly.

You might talk about how hard it is to manage your time now that sales are through the roof and the business has you working around the clock. Or how surprised you were when your new staff threw you a birthday party in the office.

Do this in a setting that’s outward-focused — maybe wait till the second date when you’re out hiking or at a ball game — and it will feel much more low-key and natural.

5. Own Your Masculine Energy

dating a taller woman 2

When you’re dating a taller woman and possibly feeling strange about it, the best thing you can do is really own your masculine energy. What does this mean?

Cultivate the qualities of an “alpha male.” The alpha male knows what he wants, is confident about who he is, and will not allow other people’s opinions to distract him from his goals. He’s also considerate, respectful, and assertive.

Step into your masculine energy when you interact with your taller dates and see if that doesn’t change the vibe between you. It should.

Assert your masculinity by doing things like paying for the bill, giving her your jacket if she gets cold, and walking her to her car or Uber.

Help her solve problems.

A guy who can fix things is like gold. Maybe she’s struggling with an issue at work, needs a repair done in her apartment, or can’t seem to find some information she’s looking for. Step in and try to help.

You might even try a comedy, improv, or creative writing class to really sharpen your skills so your sense of humor overrides any feelings about the height difference she may have. At the same time, remember…

7. Don’t Be Negative About It

No matter what, don’t keep complaining about the fact that she’s taller. It may be tempting to compare yourself to other couples when you’re out or make sarcastic jokes about her height, but just don’t do it.

First, when you use humor, make sure it’s self-deprecating (insulting your date is never good!) and actually funny (I wasn’t kidding about those improv classes). Otherwise, you’ll seem negative and possibly ruin a good thing.

This is especially important when she wears heels. Tell her she’s beautiful when she wears heels. Don’t say, “Can you wear flats? I don’t want you to be that much taller than me.” That’s just a sign of insecurity. If you truly know your value, it won’t bother you if the woman you’re dating is an Amazon woman towering above you. You’ll know you’re the man and that she looks sexy.

8. Enjoy the Advantages

Dating a taller woman has tons of advantages. Don’t believe me? Let’s just look at a few of them.

First of all, If she’s very tall, some guys might avoid dating her for that reason. That sucks for her… but it’s good for you since there will be less competition.

Again, if she’s a tall woman, she can handle more — or if she’s average height woman and just taller than you, she could still match your pace pretty well. If you’re still partying, this is obviously a plus.

Dating a Taller Woman Wrap-Up

Even if dating a taller woman is a little uncomfortable at first, I’d say go for it. There’s no reason to limit your options by letting your insecurities get in the way. In fact, if you do feel insecure about it, you might have bigger problems anyway.

Confidence always wins the day when it comes to dating, so if a woman’s height can knock you off your game so easily, eventually that lack of confidence will hurt you in other ways.

This is why working with a coach is so important. Getting your head right when it comes to evaluating your opportunities in the dating world is everything. In my Signature program, I offer 12 private sessions over a period of three months. You’ll learn what really attracts certain types of women to you and how to project the confidence you’ll need to compete — and win — at the game of love.

But it can be even harder if you feel like your dating pool is limited by the height of potential matches.

Essentially, the issue stems from the view that men need to be taller and women need to be shorter in a heterosexual relationship.

Hollie-Anne

Now, there’s no denying that being a shorter man is filled with its own challenges.

Men with shorter statures have spoken themselves about a lack of interest from others – something backed up by one study that found 48.9% of females said they would only date taller men.

Men have noted their shortness can have a detrimental impact on their sex life.

Amy, who is 5ft 11, says: ‘I think some men, not all, might feel emasculated by tall women and also being tall or large isn’t seen as very “feminine.”

‘And I think men – well, society and media in general (through the male gaze) – really idolise a really small and petite woman.

‘So if you’re a tiny little thing, that’s seen as more attractive than someone who is tall or muscular – or seen as more feminine.’

Megan, who is 5ft 8, agrees that the idea that women need to be petite to be ‘feminine’ is extremely problematic.

She says: ‘I think it’s people’s perception of what society thinks they should be that is the problem – e.g. women want to be dainty and small, men want to be big and tough.

‘So if you’re with someone who doesn’t make you feel that way, it’s uncomfortable.’

SiriusXM's Town Hall With The Cast Of Spider-Man: No Way Home

Natalie, who is 5ft 11, says that height has always been important thing for her when it comes to dating and attraction – but perhaps only because she’s been made to feel this way by ‘accepted norms.’

‘I think a lot of that comes down to what society teaches us about how a couple is supposed to look, and I have likely internalised some of that,’ she explains.

‘I would find it hard to be with someone much shorter than me because I would feel self-conscious – which I know is ridiculous. It really shouldn’t matter.

‘Back when I was dating, I would find that men who were my height or shorter would very rarely approach me, or they would make an awkward comment about my height.

Megan, for example, always makes her height known to potential dates in advance – so was relieved when apps introduced the height function on profiles.

‘Before on dating apps I’d always make sure men knew my height before the date,’ she adds.

‘It’s a bit awkward to just add it into conversation – so having height listed on my profile removes the need to do that.’

Although, she takes men’s heights with pinch of salt.

‘I appreciated when dating apps like Hinge brought in the height function – although you have to subtract two inches from what men say to get the real height,’ she says.

But ultimately, as Tom Holland summed up so well, it’s society’s views on height that need to change – not the couples themselves.

Hopefully, the more we talk about why we hold these height prejudices, the better we will get at understanding and overcoming them.

'Tall Girl 2,' Zendaya and Tom Holland and the stigma around tall women dating shorter men

Spoiler alert: The following post discusses the ending of Netflix's first "Tall Girl" movie, so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.

Tall women don't often see themselves or their romantic plights represented.

Netflix's "Tall Girl 2" is streaming Friday, the sequel to the streaming service's 2019 film about a 6-foot-3 teenage girl who falls for an even taller foreign exchange student before realizing she's in love with her much shorter best friend.

"I wish that I didn't care," she says of the height of potential suitors, blaming social stigmas that dictate women should be "small and dainty" while men are "big and protect us."

But there are celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Kevin and Eniko Hart, and Zendaya and Tom Holland who have helped increase visibility in real life. For some, "Tall Girl" was the first time they saw their own height experiences on screen.

"I identified with feeling outside the norm," Emily McBride, 26, says of the first movie. "But I think something that frustrated me was it felt like in the end she was (only) validated because a guy liked her."

At 6-foot-1 – not including the platform Doc Martens or other heeled shoes she's prone to wear – McBride doesn't view anyone's height as a "deal breaker." She dates a "pretty equal mix" of shorter and taller men, and has only been out with shorter women, but would be open to dating women taller than her, too – she's just "so used to being the tallest woman in the room."

"As I've gotten older and (am) coming into my own sexuality and realizing I'm queer, framing relationships from that lens has changed my perspective on height," she says. "It's made me more accepting – obviously, it would be super-rare if I meet a girl that's taller than me, but height has become even less prioritized in my mind."

Queer dating is "just more laid back and there isn't this weird kind of patriarchal 'the man has to be stronger and larger' weighing on it," McBride adds.

To the women who do feel strongly that they want their partner to be taller, Jackson notes that's OK from a social standpoint ("You're allowed to be attracted to whatever you want to be attracted to"), but there's a right way to go about it.

Wendy Zipes Hunter met her husband more than 30 years ago at a party. At 6-foot-1, she was the tallest woman there; at 6-foot-6, he was the tallest man. Now, they share three sons in their 20s, who all stand between 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-10.

Years later, Hunter still believes there's "a little stigma" when it comes to height differences in relationships. She's enthused to see these recent examples of confident tall women in media.

"It does help normalize things in the world," Hunter says. "Tall girls should not be limited to just date tall guys. Same thing for shorter men. If they're attracted to a tall woman, go for it. It's such a silly thing when you think about it – it's just a height difference. That's all it is."

The Best Dating Sites for Dating Tall Women

Benefits of Dating Taller Women

  • It’s A Power Move – Handled correctly, walking into a room with the tallest woman for miles places you at a high level of perceived confidence and interest among the crowd. Is she a model? Is he a baller? Everyone will want to know your story.
  • Nobody Wants To Fight Her – You won’t have to protect your girl from drunk women just because she accidentally shoulder bumped one of them. Smaller women tend to be more forgiving when towered over by someone that looks like an Amazonian warrior.
  • Clothes – She will still “borrow” your clothes, but at least she won’t be swimming in your hoodies at home and tossing them aside as soon as she leaves the house. Depending on her size, you might also get a chance to swipe a couple of hers. Don’t sleep on the power of the double wardrobe.
  • Good Posture – Even the most confident men have to admit that you tend to stand up a little more straight around her when your girlfriend is taller.
  • Legs For Days – If you’re a legs guy, then those model thighs will drive you crazy. Not to mention the cuddles are better as well. You two will be wrapped around each other snug as a bug in a rug.
  • No Reaching – The short girlfriend struggle is real. Anyone who has dated a smaller woman knows at least 20% of your job is reaching things that she can’t.

Challenges That Come With Dating a Woman Taller Than You

  • The Anti-Power Move – Handled incorrectly, a taller woman can be your worst nightmare. If you let yourself feel belittled by her height, it’s a constant emasculation that will never go away; and yes, it will be used against you in arguments.
  • Her Insecurities – Obviously, there is a bit of a stigma around dating a man shorter than you. You could very well be her first. If this is the case, then it’s an obstacle that you might have to overcome.
  • Dancing – Don’t think that you’ll just be able to start booty poppin’ on the dance floor. You two will have to figure out a sweet spot. Until you get a feel for the right stances to put yourselves in, you’re going to find yourself in awkward positions that leave you suffocating with your face buried in her clavicle.
  • Spooning – I’m not going to lie to you; the symmetry is all off when it comes to this. It’s just something you’re going to have to deal with until you get comfortable with it. Maybe you should try being the little spoon for a while.

Tips for Dating a Taller Woman

Be Confident

You need to be completely secure in your manhood to pull this relationship off. People WILL talk and stare. You might have to stand on your tippy-toes a little to kiss, but that’s fine. There will be times when she’ll want to wear heels to look cute for you, ultimately dooming you to an evening of even more stares. Deal with it and embrace it; it’s about you two and no one else.

There’s No Real Difference

The best mindset for you to have is that she’s no different than any other girl you’ve dated, because it’s true. Just because she could ride the adult rides at Disney World a little sooner than you could doesn’t make her any more or less of a normal female. The problems come when you treat her height like it’s a big deal.

Compliment Her Height

Some women feel empowered by their stature, but it can also be a point of insecurity. Growing up taller than everyone can be awkward, especially in middle school. Be sure to remind her that you like it every once in a while. It’ll score you major points.

FAQ

Do guys care if a girl is taller?

Yes, many guys do. Some men simply prefer the tiny figure of a person smaller than them. Others tend to be intimidated by someone towering over them. In either case, a secure man wouldn’t let something like that discourage him. If she’s attractive and has a great personality, there should be no problem.

 Do men like tall girls?

Yes, some men prefer it. The tall women fetish is alive and well on the hub. However, not all men are so open to it. It’s something that takes getting used to, but you know what they say; once you go tall, you might as well ball.

Around the 5’9″ mark is where you’d generally start to be considered “Tall” as a woman. That may vary depending on the height of the guy.

Is it okay to date a taller woman?

It’s great! I encourage it. Tall women bring a different dimension into the dating life that you don’t get with other girls, especially if she’s taller than you. Every outing, date, and interaction is more interesting because of the model sized beauty beside you.

Where can I find a taller woman to date?

Athletic women in basketball, volleyball, tennis, and other sports tend to be taller. Online dating sites like Elite Singles will pair you with other athletic types. If you’re not into sports yourself, then sometimes there is a filter on dating sites that will allow you to single out the women who consider themselves athletes.
