The Courtship: next episode, eliminations, trailer and everything we know about the dating show

Tired of roses and pods on reality dating shows? Well, The Courtship is taking things old school — like Pride & Prejudice style (or Bridgerton, if you prefer).

The Courtship is a brand new reality dating show airing on NBC. Formerly known as Pride & Prejudice: An Experiment in Romance, the new series looks to bring to life the dreams of classical romantic pursuit made famous by the likes of Jane Austen.

From when you can watch it, to who the heroine and her suitors are, here is everything you need to know about The Courtship.

When is The Courtship next episode?

The third episode of The Courtship is set to air on Sunday, March 20, at 8 pm ET/PT.

The reality dating show will then be made available for streaming the next day (Monday) for Peacock subscribers in the U.S.

The Courtship recaps and who's been eliminated

Read below for a brief recap of the most recent episodes of The Courtship and who was eliminated in each episode. SPOILER ALERT if you do not want to know who has been eliminated.

Episode 1: Nicole Remy, her court (aka family and friends) and her suitors all arrive at the Castle Howard estate in North Yorkshire, England. Following a quick rundown of the rules (see premise below), Nicole got her first introduction to her 16 suitors the old-fashioned way, with hand-written letters.

They all got to meet in person at the show's first ball, first with the court and suitors mingling. Later, Nicole made her grand entrance. The suitors quickly tried to stand out and get some one-on-one time with Nicole, as well as six being selected for a brief group date. Nicole then selected her first one-on-one date, Daniel Bochicchio, where sparks flew literally and figuratively, as they kissed as fireworks went off.

It was then time for Nicole to select the first three contestants to be eliminated. Sharing a potential "last dance" with the six suitors she was least sure about, Nicole ultimately chose Caleb Ward, Lewis Echavarria and Jarrett Schanzer.

Episode 2: The latest round of The Courtship began with the Nicole, the suitors and her court spending the day on the lake. The suitors rowed everyone across the lake for a picnic, each trying to impress either Nicole and her parents. One boat of suitors (Mr. Cones, Mr. Chapman and Mr. Kesseler) not carrying anyone else decided to show their dedication to Nicole by jumping into the lake for her and pulling her boat ashore. Rowing the parents, Captain Kim opened up about past heartbreak, while on shore, Mr. Saffa got a little flirty with Nicole's friend.

Mr. Hunter, after chatting up Nicole's parents at the picnic, earned the one-on-one date with Nicole, a tour of the estate. After telling her about his past travelling around the world and desire to end his solo travels and instead have new adventures with a partner, the two shared a kiss.

At the farewell ball, Captain Kim, Mr. Mumbray, Mr. Luxe, Mr. Kesseler and Mr. Cones were all put up for elimination. Ultimately, Mr. Luxe and Mr. Kesseler were sent home.

What is The Courtship premise?

The idea of The Courtshipis to create a Regency-era romantic story, complete with a castle setting and the need to not only win over the heroine, but her “court” (aka family and friends) as well.

The show will focus on a modern girl tired of modern dating. She is transported back to Regency-era England in the hope of finding love. In a grand 19th century castle set among the rolling hills of the English countryside, a group of 16 eligible suitors must battle to win her heart. However, it is not just the heroine who gets to have a say. Her “court” chooses dates for her and helps uncover which suitors deserve her love. As each attempts to out-romance the other, suitors find themselves at a weekly farewell ball where it will be revealed whether their journey in romance continues or their carriage awaits to return them to the modern world.

Who is in The Courtship cast?

The leading lady for The Courtshipwill be Nicole Remy, a 26-year-old software engineer from Seattle. According to NBC’s bio, at the start of the pandemic Nicole pursued a new career and learned coding, eventually allowing her to join a tech startup. She also was previously a part of the Seattle Seahawks cheerleading team, the Sea Gals, for two years. She enjoys fitness, nature, travel, reading and practices sustainability and mindfulness.

Nicole’s court will be made up of her mom, Dr. Claire Spain-Remy; her dad, Claude Remy; her sister, Danie; and friend, Tessa Cleary.

The wacky 52-year-long evolution of dating shows on TV

sean lowe catherine giudicci bachelor proposal
    ABC

    The INSIDER Summary:

    • Dating reality shows started back in 1965 when "The Dating Game" premiered on ABC.
    • Since then, the genre has skyrocketed into success.
    • What started as televised matchmaking has since turned into drama-filled debauchery.

If you think that "The Bachelor" started the reality show dating game, you couldn't be more wrong.

The genre kicked things off over half a century ago with ABC's "The Dating Game." Since it hit the airwaves in 1965, several producers and networks have followed suit, and innocent matchmaking shows have evolved into wildly successful dating programs with an emphasis on sex and drama.

Check out the roller coaster evolution of dating shows below.

"The Dating Game" revolutionized reality TV by playing matchmaker for young men and woman when it started in 1965.

Each episode helped one man or woman find a date with eligible contestants. The catch? The potential partners were hidden out of sight behind a board while the eligible bachelor or bachelorette made decisions based solely on their answers and voices.

By the time the show ended in 1999 after four separate runs, the game had become iconic, and was parodied on comedy shows like "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

The next big dating show was "Blind Date," UK's big hit that started in 1985 and lasted until 2003.

It started out the same as "The Dating Game," but then sent the couples on epic first dates where they would finally meet one another. Some people ended up at ice cream factories, but others met in the Maldives or Anguilla.

Now, it's coming back this year after 14 years off the air.

2001's "Temptation Island" started to push the boundaries of what it meant to date on TV.

Fox decided to put several happy couples in the same house as a group of lively singles. The idea was to test the couples' commitment to each other when there was so much temptation — get it? — to cheat in the house.

It was controversial before the first episode even aired, which helped drive up ratings in its first season. In the following years, several shows would take notes from this dramatic dating game.

"The Bachelor" was one of the first game-show inspired dating shows. It first aired in 2002.

    bachelor season 21

Things got competitive when "The Bachelor" hit screens in 2002. The show pitted 20 or so women against each other to compete for true love.

On top of that, they made all the women live in the same house and watch as their potential fiancé flirted and dated other women. The elimination style put a twist on the average dating show.

Here are all the couples from the show that are still together.

Runner ups from "The Bachelor" got a chance to get over their ex on "The Bachelorette."

Producers tested out "The Bachelorette" for a few seasons after "The Bachelor" first began, but went on hiatus after three seasons until coming back in 2008.

The show chooses leading women from the previous seasons to find someone new. Now the "Bachelor" stars are also chosen out of the pool rejects from "The Bachelorette." This endless circle is one thing that makes the show so successful since they use people who the audience already loves.

Here are all the couples from the show that are still together.

"The Bachelor" also inspired spin-offs such as 2010's "Bachelor Pad" and 2013's "Bachelor in Paradise."

    bachelor in paradise

After appearing on "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette" many contestants were offered spots on "Bachelor Pad" or "Bachelor in Paradise," both of which were set up more like game shows.

These shows also used the elimination-style antics and seemed to be more inspired by game shows like "Survivor" or "Big Brother" rather than typical dating shows.

"Joe Millionaire" added a surprising twist to the reality show drama in 2003.

    Evan Marriott aka 'Joe Millionaire'
    Kevin Winter/FOX/ImageDirect

"Joe Millionaire" tricked several women into thinking they were competing for a chance at true love with a very wealthy man. They didn't know that the man, Evan Marritott, was actually just an average guy until the very end. Then the winner had to decide if his average-ness was acceptable.

An even bigger twist came when the winner, Zora Andrich, chose the construction worker and producers surprised them with a million dollar check.

The show was supposed to be a one time thing, but thanks to it's overwhelming success, producers gave it a second shot. Unfortunately, the ruse was up.

2003's "Average Joe" learned from the failures of "Joe Millionaire" and had four successful seasons.

average joe adam mesh on tonight show with jay leno
    Kevin Winter/Getty Images

The show gave a group of average men (i.e. nerdy, out of shape, or blue collar workers) the chance to date an attractive young woman. This show also followed the elimination style game, but switched things up by bringing in a group of not-so average Joe's in the middle of the season.

The producers took note from "The Bachelorette" and offered Adam Mesh, one of the rejected Joe's, a chance to find love in season three before returning to their normal structure for season four.

Dating shows began to evolve further into game shows when "For Love or Money" came out later in 2003.

cast of "for love or money" game show/dating show

Thanks to the success of "Joe Millionaire," many producers started to bring money into the picture. Dating shows began to look more like game shows.

"For Love or Money" furthered this trend in 2003 by telling contestants up front that they would have to choose between love and money if they made it to the finale.

2003 proved to be a big year once more for these types of TV programs when "Boy Meets Boy" — the first gay dating show — hit the air.

    boy meets boy dating show
    Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

"Boy Meets Boy" also followed the elimination-style dating game, but in a sick twist, it was revealed halfway through the season that half of the contestants were actually straight.

If the bachelor chose someone who was gay, the pair would win a cash prize and a trip. Of course, there was a ton of backlash. Even his best friend Andra Stasko who appeared on the show to help him along the way was furious.

It was around that same time that MTV started to dive into dating shows as well. They kicked things off with "Room Raiders" in 2004.

    room raiders tv show
    YouTube/DentalTech1000

MTV made dating shows appeal to an even younger demographic. "Room Raiders," which led men or women through the bedrooms of three contestants and made them pick a date based on what they found, featured many people who were in college or in their very early 20s.

With the success of "Room Raiders" it was only a matter of time before they put more efforts into dating shows.

MTV made several trashy TV hits for the younger generations over the next several years. They aired shows such as 2004's "Date My Mom," 2005's "Next," and 2006's "Parental Control."

Screen Shot of Parental Control on MTV
    YouTube/PalmErikaMEH

MTV became a mecca for young dating shows. They aired "Parental Control," "Next," "Date My Mom," and "The X Effect," all while keeping up with 2001's "ElimiDate" which ran for five years.

Unlike many of the other dating show producers, the minds behind these MTV hits didn't seem to care that everything was so obviously staged.

Shows like "Rock of Love," "I Love New York," and "A Shot at Love" became popular between 2006 and 2009 thanks to the growing success of rowdy reality TV shows.

flavor of love and i love new york
    YouTube/Ceebs144p

After becoming hot beds for reality TV and competition based shows, MTV and VH1 had a lot of familiar faces to work with. They often took the fan favorites from other shows and gave them their own dating competitions.

People like Tila Tequila, New York, Bret Michaels, and Flavor Flav all took shots at finding love on TV.

Bravo's "Millionaire Matchmaker" hit the small screen in 2008 and veered far from the traditional game show style.

the millionaire matchmaker cast patti stanger
    Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images

The reality show followed matchmaker Patti Stanger as she coached millionaires on dating. Unlike other shows, "Millionaire Matchmaker" wasn't a game at all. The people on the show were real and many really were looking for love.

After eight successful seasons, the show came to an end in 2015, and there hasn't been a popular show like it since. Unless, of course, you count her reboot on WEtv called "Million Dollar Matchmaker."

But staged dating competitions were still a massive success. Take 2010's "Baggage" for example, hosted by Jerry Springer.

    baggage show screen grab
    YouTube/BaggageEpisodes

The man or woman deciding on the dates during this 30-minute show eliminates contestants based on their secrets and problems — presented in suitcases or "baggage" — until only one is left standing.

Then the tables turn and the bachelor or bachelorette must reveal their own baggage.

What to know about ‘The Courtship’ — a show with a classic twist on modern dating

NBC's new dating show is on a mission to prove that chivalry isn't dead.

"The Courtship," set to premiere Sunday, March 6, offers a classic twist on modern dating and takes viewers on a romantic journey that's reminiscent of "Bridgerton" and "Downtown Abbey."

Here's everything you need to know before it makes its grand debut!

    What is the show about?

Described as the "ultimate fantasy" dating show, "The Courtship" follows one lucky lady who is "transported back to Regency-era England" on her quest for love.

Set in a 19th century castle in the English countryside, the dating show features plenty of classic romance, including carriage rides and masquerade balls. There will also be other classic activities ranging from fencing and archery to handwritten letters.

The series was originally named “Pride & Prejudice: An Experiment in Romance” and was inspired by the classic novel "Pride & Prejudice." It was set to air on Peacock but was later rebranded and moved to NBC.

Who is the woman looking for love?

The heroine of the show is Nicole Remy, "a modern girl tired of modern dating," according to a press release. The Seattle resident, 26, is the youngest of three children and is pretty tight with her brother, Dominique, and sister Danielle.

Remy is a smart cookie and graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California with a bachelor of science in GeoDesign. After college, she designed commercial and residential buildings as an architecture associate while dancing for the Seattle Seahawks' NFL cheerleading team for two years.

During the pandemic, Remy learned to code and began to apply for tech and engineering jobs with the intent of making a career change. These days, she works as a software engineer and product manager on the founding team of a tech startup.

    Who are the suitors?

The following 16 suitors are vying for the attention of the show's leading lady:

    • Mr. Alex “Achilles” King: A 35-year-old online fitness coach from San Diego
    • Mr. Daniel Bochicchio: A 31-year-old real estate agent fromStaten Island, New York
    • Mr. Lincoln Chapman: A 25-year-old model from Nashville
    • Mr. Lewis Echavarria: A 26-year-old mortgage advisor fromMiami
    • Mr. Jaquan Holland: A 30-year-old teacher from Los Angeles
    • Mr. Christian Lee Cones: A 25-year-old IT support manager fromLos Angeles
    • Mr. Daniel “Dan” Hunter:A 32-year-old travel company owner fromLos Angeles
    • Mr. Derek Kesseler:A 31-year-old digital marketing manager from Vancouver
    • Capt. Danny Kim:A 31-year-old former Air Force captain from Seoul, South Korea
    • Mr. Chandler “Chan” Luxe:A 24-year-old musical artist from West Hollywood, California
    • Mr. Charlie Mumbray: A 25-year-oldat-home personal trainer from Kent, England
    • Mr. Giuseppe Castronovo: A 27-year-old pizzeria owner fromPoint Pleasant, New Jersey
    • Mr. Peter Saffa:A 23-year-old social media manager from Defiance, Missouri
    • Dr. Jarrett Schanzer:A 35-year-old aesthetic medicine doctor/anesthesiologist from Miami
    • Mr. Nate Shanklin:A 34-year-old recruiter from Sacramento, California
    • Mr. Caleb Ward:A 24-year-old content creator from Hampton, Virginia

    Who is in the 'Court'?

Before the suitors can win Remy's heart, they also need to get the approval from her "trusted Court," which includes her dad, Claude, her mom, Claire, her sister Danie and her best friend Tessa. The Court serves as Remy's advisors and helps select dates for her.

Where can I watch the show?

"The Courtship" premieres on Sunday, March 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and will stream on Peacock the following day.

The wacky 52-year-long evolution of dating shows on TV

Check old school dating shows roller coaster evolution of dating shows below.

"The Dating Game" revolutionized reality TV by playing matchmaker for young men and woman when it started in 1965.

Each episode helped one man or woman find a date with eligible contestants. The catch? The potential partners were hidden out old school dating shows sight behind a board while the eligible bachelor or bachelorette made decisions old school dating shows solely old school dating shows their answers and voices.

By the time the show ended in 1999 after four separate runs, the game had become iconic, old school dating shows, and was parodied on comedy shows like "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

"Joe Millionaire" tricked several women into thinking they were competing for a chance at true love with a very wealthy man. They didn't know that the man, Evan Marritott, was actually just an average old school dating shows the very end.

2003's "Average Joe" learned from the failures of "Joe Millionaire" and i need free dating site four successful seasons.

The show gave a group of average men (i.e. nerdy, out of shape, or blue collar workers) the chance to date an attractive young woman. This show also followed the elimination style game, but switched things up by bringing in a group of not-so average Joe's in the middle of the season.

The producers old school dating shows note from "The Bachelorette" and offered Adam Mesh, one of the rejected Joe's, a chance to find love in season three before returning to their normal structure for season four.

Dating shows began to evolve further into game shows when "For Love or Money" came out later in 2003.

"Boy Meets Boy" also followed the elimination-style dating game, but in a sick twist, it was revealed halfway through the season that half of the contestants were actually straight.

If the bachelor chose someone who was gay, the pair would win a cash prize and a trip. Of course, there was a ton of backlash, old school dating shows. Even his best friend Andra Stasko who appeared on anastasia dating russian show to help him along the way was furious.

It was around that same time that MTV started to dive into dating shows as well, old school dating shows. They kicked things off with "Room Raiders" in 2004.

    room raiders tv show

After becoming hot beds for reality TV and competition based shows, MTV and VH1 had a lot of familiar faces to work with. They often took the fan favorites from other shows and gave them their own dating competitions.

People like Tila Tequila, old school dating shows, New York, Bret Michaels, and Flavor Flav all took shots at finding love on TV.

Bravo's "Millionaire Matchmaker" hit the small screen in 2008 and veered far from the traditional game show style.

the <b>old school dating shows</b> matchmaker cast patti stanger

10 Reality Dating Shows You Totally Forgot Existed

As reality television has become old school dating shows of a prominent entity in entertainment, countless series have come and gone. There are some staples that hang around for a while like Keeping Up With the Kardashians or Survivor but few last that long. That's especially true when it comes to reality dating shows.

RELATED: 10 Best Reality Dating Shows, According To IMDb

The obvious one that comes to mind is The Bachelor and its spin-offs, which has been a franchise since 2002. There have been many other attempts at reality dating shows during that time and while a few were memorable even in short stints, some have been forgotten to time.

10 Frank The Entertainer In A Basement Affair

Some of the concepts for reality dating shows were way out there and this was one of them. Frank "The Entertainer" Maresca first came to prominence as a contestant on I Old school dating shows New York where he stood out for a particular scene involving old school dating shows and because he still lived with his mom.

After losing there, he got his own show in 2010 where ladies competed to win his affection. To do so, they lived with him in his basement with his parent right upstairs. In fact, Frank's mom played a big part in the decision-making process. Kerry Schwartz won but split with Frank just days after the finale.

    9 Boy Meets Boy

There are some reality shows that are forgotten for a good reason. That's the case with Boy Meets Boy, which ran for only one season back in 2003 on Bravo. The idea of the show was that a gay man would have 15 possible male suitors live with him and compete for his heart. On paper, it sounded like a gay version of The Bachelor.

However, the problem lies in the show's twist. Half of the suitors were actually straight men pretending to be gay and the show's star was unaware of this. If he would've picked a straight man, he'd win nothing and they would get a cash prize instead of him. The terrible twist was met with widespread controversy.

    8 Average Joe

A lot of dating shows focus on the idea of an "ideal couple." Two people who can be put together and look glamorous on magazine covers and wherever they go in public. Average Joe, which lasted four seasons between 2003 and 2005, went a different route.

The concept here was that "average" looking people would try to win the affection of someone extremely attractive. Midway through the show, other good-looking participants would join in. In all but one season, an attractive contestant was picked over someone deemed "average."

    7 I Wanna Marry "Harry"

One old school dating shows the more remembered reality dating shows is Joe Millionaire, where women old school dating shows at it to win the love of a "millionaire." The twist was that the guy was actually not rich. A similar twist in that same vein was in I Wanna Marry "Harry," which played on the idea of the winner becoming royalty.

RELATED: 15 Best Guilty Pleasure Dating Shows On Netflix and Hulu, Ranked

Contestants were led to believe that the man they were competing for was Prince Harry of the Royal Family, simply because he looked similar to him. Producers did everything they could to convince the ladies of that lie. The odd 2014 show was ultimately pulled after airing half of its episodes.

    6 Chains Of Love

Every once in a while there's a premise for a show that is so over the top and weird that you can't help but take a second look. Chains of Love, a reality series that aired in 2001, was just that because the setup involved a person chained to four people of the opposite sex for four straight days.

They were only allowed to be separated for privacy situations like using the bathroom. The "picker" in the middle would eliminate three suitors over time and finally select a winner. Something so off the wall would be remembered more if it lasted longer than just six episodes.

    5 Farmer Wants A Wife

As is the case with all of these, Farmer Wants a Wife attempted to put its own unique spin on the dating show tropes that old school dating shows were used to by 2008, old school dating shows. Instead of fawning over a celebrity or someone who comes from money, this show's focal point was a simple farmer.

Matt Neustadt was a 29-year-old who lived and worked on a farm. Each week, the ladies on the show would take part in competitions centering on the farm and seeing if they could handle his day-to-day life. That included milking goats, chasing chickens, driving a tractor, and more.

4 For The Love Of Ray J

After first being known simply as Brandy's old school dating shows, Ray J carved out his own successful career in the music industry, old school dating shows. That spilled over into reality television, old school dating shows, where he got his own dating show. For The Love of Ray J saw girls fighting for the admiration of the R&B singer.

RELATED: 10 Reality Show Winners Who Then Appeared On Other Reality Shows

Like Flavor Flav, Ray J gave the girls nicknames instead of using their real ones and he often treated them to upscale events. After two seasons, Ray J was still ultimately unable to find a partner to last.

    3 Real Chance Of Love

Along the lines of A Basement AffairReal Chance of Love (2008-2009) put the focus on two men who had previously taken part in I Love New York. The interesting bit was that the guys, Ahmad "Real "Givens and Kamal "Chance" Givens," were brothers and rappers known as the Stallionaires.

Initially, old school dating shows, the show was supposed to go to Mr. Boston but he declined and it went to Real and Chance. The series followed the tropes found in similar dating shows but the brothers had to avoid crossing over their feelings for girls. Chance famously didn't even pick a season 1 winner.

    2 The 5th Wheel

So far, the majority of these shows have been a season-long adventure where a group competes against each other to be with someone. The 5h Wheel, airing from 2001 until 2004, was unique in that each episode featured different people who all old school dating shows on one date.

The premise sent two men and two women on a double date. Then, a provacative fifth person would enter the date as everyone swapped partners. By the end of the night, the participants would decide if they wanted to date again, old school dating shows, go home with the titular fifth wheel, or leave alone.

    1 Room Raiders

There's no question that Room Raiders had one of the more interesting concepts of any reality old school dating shows show. The MTV series ran from 2003 until 2009 and would see three contestants get taken from their bedrooms with no time to clean anything up or move anything around.

They would then sit together in a van and watch as a potential suitor went through their room, judging them old school dating shows it. At the end of the episode, the suitor picks which person they want to date based purely on the room. The contestants also got to investigate the other person's room together.

The 90's were all that and a bag of chips. From overalls with one strap down to car phones to the Dick Tracy soundtrack, the decade was pretty much America's golden age. Don't agree? Talk to the hand. Below I round up the best dating shows of the 90's for a reminder of the incredible fashion, music, and celebs of the day. Remember brown lipstick? Turtleneck crop tops? Carmen Electra? It's so good/bad! Check it.

Studs - I was eight years old when this show first aired and I thought it was the sexiest thing since shirtless Prince Eric in the The Little Mermaid. The way the show works is that two guys, AKA studs, go out with three different women. Then they all gather on the show and try to guess what happened on the dates and who likes who. It's like the game Clue but someone got fingered instead of murdered. Make sure to get a good look at the guy with the long curly perm and a lace-up Renaissance top in the clip. FASHION, you guys!

Singled Out - Dating is a numbers game. On Singled Out the show starts off with 50 horny singles competing for one special someone. The most important thing about this show is that it skyrocketed Jenny McCarthy to.actually what is old school dating shows up to these days? Famous for her love of fart jokes and her Playboy looks she is basically Howard Stern's dream girl. Jenny taught Americans that all it takes to get on TV is a huge gazongas and a terrible personality. Namaste.

Change of Heart - Change of Heart is the Jerry Springer of dating shows, old school dating shows. The basic concept is that a (creepy) couple comes old school dating shows the show and one of them goes on a date with a new person, old school dating shows. Then all three gather on the couch for some real talk and the contestant decides if they want to stay in their original relationship or break up after ONE DATE with someone else. Bzzz! - This show was only on for a year because it was kind of boring and there were too many rules. Kind of like actual dating. Basically, a contestant has to choose between four people who are slowly eliminated through a series of ridiculous tests and questions, old school dating shows. The best question from this clip is when the bachelorette asks a potential date, "Where are you taking me to our honeymoon?" Slow down girl! All you know about this dude is that he's a bartender who waxes his eyebrows.

Best line from the clip - "I believe in everything; g-d, what horoscope tells me to do, ghosts. You name it, old school dating shows, I believe it!"

Then they playback the date on TV adding funny commentary in the form of subtitles, animations, and thought bubbles. old school dating shows In the below clip, a woman gets matched up on date with a guy wearing a leopard fedora, a neck-scarf and a red jumpsuit. The audience sees only the game; an important feature of all dating game shows is that the contestants have little or no previous knowledge of each other, and are exposed to each other only through the game, which may include viewing a photograph or at least knowing the basic criteria for participation (typically participants are not already married).

There have been a number of dating shows aired on television over the years, using a variety of formats and rules. They are presented for the entertainment of the viewers. As the genre progressed, the format developed towards a reality-style show and more into a relationship show then simply finding a mate.

    History[edit]

The dating game show subgenre has its origins in the United States. The original dating game shows were introduced by television producerChuck Barris. The format of Barris's first dating show, The Dating Game, which premiered in 1965, saw a bachelor or bachelorette ask questions of three singles seen only by the audience. The various suitors were able to describe their rivals in uncomplimentary ways, which made the show work well as a general devolution of dignity. Some of the questions were written to elicit humorous or suggestive answers. Another Barris show, The Newlywed Game, featured recently-married couples competing to answer questions about each other's preferences. The couple who knew each other the best would win the game; sometimes others got divorced, old school dating shows. Once, someone divorced after appearing on The Newlywed Game got a "second chance" on The Dating Game. Gimmicks were the lifeblood of old school dating shows such shows, which drew criticisms for instigating disaffection that could not have been effected, old school dating shows.

The genre waned for a while but it was later revived by The New Dating Game and the UK version Blind Date, and the original shows were popular in reruns, old school dating shows, unusual for any game show. Cable television revived some interest in these shows during the 1980s and 1990s, and eventually new shows began to be made along the old concepts. Variations featuring LGBT contestants began to appear on a few specialty channels.

Other shows focused on the conventional blind date, where two people were set up and then captured on video, sometimes with comments or subtitles that made fun of their dating behaviour. He Said, She Said focused not on setting up the date, but on comparing the couple's different impressions afterwards, and for their cooperation offering to fund a second date. These resembled the reality shows that began to emerge at about the same time in the 1990s.

The increased popularity of reality television since the early 2000s influenced new types of dating shows, where the emphasis was on realistic actions and tensions, old school dating shows, but which used less realistic scenarios than the traditional blind date:

    • The Bachelor (2002) and The Bachlorette (2003), ABC series where a single man or woman partakes in activities with a larger group of women or men respectively, and progressively eliminates contestants from the pool over the course of the season.
    • The Fifth Wheel (2001), in which four people, two of one sex and two of another, are allowed to meet and bond to an extent, old school dating shows, before a "fifth wheel," a person of one of either gender, but always a heterosexual, enters and attempts to break up the equilibrium.
    • Joe Millionaire (2003), a Fox series satirizing the genre, where a group of women competed to become the bride of a bachelor billed as being a millionaire. However, the bachelor was actually a blue collar worker who wasn't a millionaire. If the last remaining woman still accepted his love despite the stunt, they also shared a grand prize of $1 million. A 2022 revival employs two bachelors, with one of them stated to be a millionaire (but not revealing which one).
    • Love Island (2015), a British series where a group of male and female singles are isolated at a villa in a vacation setting, old school dating shows, attempting to form couples while also competing in challenges to earn advantages and the opportunity to go on dates. Couples may also face elimination via viewer vote
    • Temptation Island (2001), where long-standing heterosexual couples were deliberately separated old school dating shows made to watch each other's mates interacting romantically on and after dates, making extensive use of video—the only means by which they could communicate on the island.
    • Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? (2000) a one-off Fox special with a beauty pageant-like contest to become the bride of a single man, billed as a having a net worth of at least $1 million, whose identity was not revealed until the conclusion of the competition.

Alongside these reality competitions, there were also other new studio-based formats for dating shows. The 2008 Australian series Taken Out, which was exported internationally to other countries under the title Take Me Out, featured bachelors discussing aspects of their personality and interests with a large pool of singles. The singles could press a button on their podium to eliminate themselves from contention if they were no longer interested in the bachelor, with the game ending once there are none remaining, old school dating shows. GSN's Baggage (2010) featured suitors presenting and defending personal and often embarrassing details about themselves to a single, old school dating shows. At the end of each episode, the single presents a detail of their own to their chosen suitor, who must choose to accept or decline their offer of a date.

    Commonalities[edit]

Some common threads run through these shows. When participants are removed, it is usually done one at a time to drag out the action and get audience sympathy for specific players. In shows involving couples, there is a old school dating shows incentive to break up any of the existing relationships. In shows involving singles, there is a mismatch of numbers ensuring constant competition. This creates the action, tension and humiliation when someone is rejected. There are also reports of mercenary practice, that is, members of one sex paid to participate in the game to attain balance of sex ratio.

Series involving gay and bisexual contestants[edit]

The first gay version of these more realistic shows to receive mainstream attention was Boy Meets Boy, with a format similar to that of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The show featured an unusual plot twist: eight of the men from the show's original dating pool were actually heterosexual men pretending to be homosexual; one important part of the plot was whether the gay contestant would be able to recognize the heterosexual men.

Some gay and straight romances have been sparked on the other reality game shows, suggesting that they too may really be "dating shows" in disguise. But any social situation has the potential to result in romance, especially work. The first dating show to regularly incorporate old school dating shows contestants was MTV series A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, which included both male and female contestants vying for the affections of the show's star, internet star Tila Tequila, who is bisexual. MTV also featured a season of Are You The One? with exclusively openly LGBT and sexually fluid contestants, a decision met with critical acclaim.

The British series Naked Attraction has, since its inception in 2016, included gay/lesbian and bisexual contestants, with some players picking from groups of the same gender as themselves, and some bisexual participants choosing from mixed groups. From the second series, the show would occasionally include potential dates who were in the process of transitioning.

    Modern innovations[edit]

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, a new wave of dating shows began airing in U.S, old school dating shows. syndication old school dating shows were more sexually suggestive than their earlier counterparts, including shows such as Blind Date, Elimidate and The 5th Wheel, which often pushed boundaries of sexual content allowed on broadcast television, old school dating shows. As the 2000s progressed, the ratings for many of these shows began to decline, a situation exacerbated by the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy in 2004 as production companies out of fear of being imposed with monetary penalties by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for indecent content began self-censoring their dating shows (and many syndicated programs targeted at the 18-49 demographic, in general) to levels in which even profanities typically permissible on television were edited out of episodes.

Since then, the dating game show has virtually died off from television syndication, though cable television networks such as VH1 have continued to air dating shows with content similar to that of the syndicated dating shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s and major over-the-air broadcast networks have tried, often with marginal old school dating shows, to use dating shows that are less risque compared to those shows. Attempts to revive the dating show in syndication first came in 2011, when Excused and Who Wants to Date a Comedian? both debuted; this was followed in 2012 by NBCUniversal Television Distribution's sale of reruns of the Game Show Network series Baggage into syndication. All three shows were dropped in September 2013, removing the genre from broadcast syndication for a time. In July 2014, VH1 aired Dating Naked, modeled on Dutch show Adam Zkt. Eva, which matches up heterosexual contestants who are nude most of the time.

A sobering caveat of the power of television and romance in combination came when a popular dating variant of the talk show, old school dating shows, inviting secret admirers to meet on the stage, backfired on The Jenny Jones Show. The admirer was a homosexual friend of a heterosexual man who was so outraged after the taping that he later murdered the admirer.[1] The secret admirer variant of the talk show has remained popular, it continued be used on Oprah, but with less emotionally loaded surprises, and much more careful checking of the guests' backgrounds and attitudes; occasional episodes of Maury combine this format, though not always in a direct manner, with reveals of high school classmates who were considered to be unattractive as teenagers reuniting with their former school friends or tormentors as adults, after changing their image to become more physically attractive, old school dating shows.

The new wave of LGBTQ dating reality shows also spiked in popularity in the second half of the 2010s. The introduction of the secret matchmaking into the context of the reality show is the case of Are You the One?, old school dating shows. In 2019, reality television shows try to distance from conventional concepts of this TV format[2]

    Criticism[edit]

Like other games, the outcomes of these activities are open to rigging, leading to missed matches and possibly unhappiness among the participants. These programs have also been criticised for complicating courtship with needless public expectation. In spite of this, old school dating shows, some programs have produced episodes that portray follow-ups of unions forged therein, possibly with offspring.
