NEVER date a single mom! Here’s why

Stigma, single parent dating, mansplaining and safety worries — the (many) challenges of dating as a single parent

‘No second-hand kids’. This was the (entire) bio of one Tinder user I came across recently. I swiped left.

Rude but concise; surely this type of anti-single parent sentiment was a one-off and not to be found on the other dating apps? Especially the fancy ones, where you can match by star sign or political preference? Wrong. Dating as a single parent, I quickly learned, is a minefield, where the explosions encountered are usually not the good kind.

When I entered the dating pool following a significant timeout after splitting from the father of my child, who I had been with for twelve years, I wasn’t exactly hopeful. But what awaited me was worse than I feared. Dating after any long hiatus is tricky, and if you’re also navigating childcare issues, single parent dating, single parent stigma and coming from an experience of abuse or adultery, single parent dating, these are particularly rocky waters.

I learnt my lesson from ‘no second hand kids’ guy that leading with your child on your online profile isn’t the best idea. So, when to reveal your ‘baggage’ to a potential partner? Once, I waited until mid-way through date two to divulge my single parent status, single parent dating. Taking a nonchalant approach, after my date had finished reeling off the details of his six housemates, he asked me ‘so, who do you live with?’. ‘My son’, I casually replied. He coughed/choked on his wine, excused himself and left the table. (I thought) never to be seen again, but he returned several minutes later single parent dating opened a new topic of conversation.

I continued this casual approach when, in my house several dates later, he stumbled across a wedding photo of my ex and me and shouted from the kitchen: ‘Were you married?!’ I shouted back, ‘mm-hmm, can you grab me some water?’ The very next morning both my ex-husband and my child turned up unexpectedly at my door as we were enjoying a leisurely morning in bed, single parent dating. If this spelled disaster for him, he took his time thinking about it, eventually ghosting me after nine months together which included a holiday to Single parent dating (arranged by me). Thankfully, single parent dating, I never introduced him to my son.

<p>Rebecca Cox with her son </p>

A male model I once went on a date with spent the entire evening lecturing me about how my son needs a dad (side-note: he has one) and women who thought they could ‘go it alone’ were sadly mistaken. It was about 45 minutes into his monologue that he revealed he had a daughter he sees once every three weeks ‘because he’s busy’ (man-splaining parenting to single mums, evidently).

And it’s not just the men. If you’re a single mum who also dates women, you’ll also be treated to biphobia from (some) women and being fetishized by (some) men. One man messaged me on Hinge to tell me his ‘wife saw me on her Tinder’ therefore ‘did I want a threesome?’ (no, thank you). One woman’s bio stated simply: ‘No bis. No mums.’ Ouch.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with not wanting kids or having preferences and voicing them in your bio, but since many of the single mums I know are not single by choice, and all of them have had to overcome some form of stigma or struggle, going on the apps can truly start to feel like an exercise in voluntary torture.

So why continue to put yourself out there? It’s a question almost every single mum I know has asked herself. Single parenting is by far the most relentless but rewarding job I’ve ever undertaken. My life is full of love and laughter, but it’s lonely at times, too. In the evenings, once my son is tucked up in bed, single parent dating, the house can feel quiet and empty, single parent dating. Being a single mum can also feel all-consuming, it can become your entire identity if you let it, and dating is just one of the ways I can be something other than just ‘mum’.

On a date you can be the other you, the one you were before you had kids, single parent dating, or the one you’re becoming as you learn just how strong you are, how much you’re capable of. The next challenge comes in merging the two worlds. However separate the ‘you’ on a date is from the one tucking your child in at night, at some point you may want to integrate the two. Where do you even start when it comes to meeting someone you feel comfortable introducing your child to, in any capacity, let alone as your partner?

<p>Rebecca Cox has found dating as a single parent challenging </p>

Indeed, there is an extra layer of stress when it comes single parent dating keeping yourself and your kids safe. I spoke to sex & dating educator and single mum Lalalaletmeexplain whose book Block, Delete, Move On is due to be published in 2022, about how single parents can stay safe when dating. She says: “For starters, don’t state that you’re a single parent on your profile because unfortunately single mothers can be targeted by people single parent dating specifically want to date mothers in order to gain access to their children. Drop it into conversation early on, just don’t advertise it on the profile.” Lala has vital advice about keeping yourself and your children safe when you’re considering dating as a single parent on her Instagram page.

In order to negate these risks, it can be tempting to completely separate your dating from your parenting, only dating people you know you’ll never be able to integrate into your home life. I’ve done this a number single parent dating ways: by choosing a string of people who were completely emotionally unavailable (mostly good fun) and even picking people who lived in entirely different countries (nothing quite like international travel to really prevent yourself getting too close to someone), single parent dating. One of my single mum friends (from the juiciest Whatsapp group on my phone) just came home from an impromptu trip to Tenerife to see a man she met at a festival, reporting back that she had ‘the best 5-day rollercoaster of intense emotions’, (returning with nothing but cystitis), single parent dating. Single parent dating said romance was dead?

Pre-Covid I frequently ditched the apps altogether and only dated people I met in the real world at bars and parties. And, from a Parisian artist to a single parent dating pirate (yes, really), they’ve all been glorious (in a wholly unsuitable way). But if meeting someone compatible in real life feels unlikely for you, hope is on the horizon. Frolo Dating, the world’s first user verified dating app for single parents is launching soon. The award-winning Frolo app has been connecting single parents for two years, and according to founder Zoë Desmond, several single parents have already found love via the community, with some even getting engaged.

<p>The Frolo dating app launches early 2022 </p>

“Frolo Dating single parent dating been created with feedback from the existing community every step of the way,” says Desmond, single parent dating. “First-hand online dating experiences from single parents have been considered and remedied within the Frolo Dating offering, including a “no ghosting” feature.” Access to the founding member version of the app begins Wednesday 24 November, single parent dating, allowing members to create their profiles and get one month free following the launch in January 2022.

Hopeless romantic (read: glutton for punishment) that I am, I have dipped in and out of the dating pool for the last four years, single parent dating. And while I remain a tireless cheerleader for the happily single, I met my gorgeous girlfriend (drunk in a bar, the old-fashioned way) this summer and am slowly convincing her that Single parent dating the single mum she never knew she was looking for, single parent dating.

If you’re looking to find your perfect match, Frolo Dating sounds like the app I wish I’d had four years ago. So if you don’t meet your perfect partner under the mistletoe this party season, 2022 is looking up. Until then, ‘no-second-hand-kids-man’ is probably still on the market.

How to date as a single parent

1. Never apologise for being a single mum. If you’re ashamed of your single parent status, you’re not ready to date.

2. Find a reliable babysitter that you trust. If you have a single mum friend close-by (find one on Frolo) with kids a similar age, trade off sleepovers so you have space in your schedule to date. The Bubble app connects you to nannies and babysitters nearby.

3. Never go on a date with someone you haven’t at least facetimed with. Single parent dating only is this a saftey precaution to check they are who they say they are, but your time is precious, and you don’t want to waste it on someone there’s obviously no spark with.

4. Check out Gingerbread Charity for single parents. They have a host of information and guides on their website as well as a forum to connect you with other parents going through the same things as you.

5. Don’t invite someone to your home, especially if your kids are there. @LaLaLaLetMeExplain has more safety advice on her Instagram page and answers questions sent in on her Insta lives.

6. Read Helen Thorn’s Get Divorced Be Happy, and remember that an ending is also a beginning.

7. Remember you’re dating for you, not your child, so first and foremost think about what you’re looking for, not just who would make a good step-parent, especially if you’re looking for something long-term. Your kids will grow up and leave home eventually. (/Hopefully.)

8. (But it massively helps if your kid likes them too, so don’t pick a monster.)

9. Dating is all about the journey, you can single parent dating out the destination when you get there, and settle down if and when you find your oasis. But until then, single parent dating, a few racy nights in Tenerife can be pretty bloody fun (cystitis aside).

We already talked about NextLove in our top sites breakdown, but there are seven other single parent online dating options we think you should be aware of.

We’ll give a quick review of each of these dating apps, talk about how well they serve single moms and dads, and ultimately answer the question, “Should you use an exclusively single parent dating parent dating site?”. Let’s get to it!

Single Parent Match

Single Parent Match is owned and run by SuccessfulMatch.com. It looks and functions similar to the company’s other brands like PositiveSingles, MillionaireMatch, single parent dating, and BiCupid. Like it’s counterparts, this single parent dating site has a very user friendly design.

Much to our surprise Single Parent match has over 2 million members and while the site may not be perfect, single parent dating, their free trial gives access to a lot of great features. For this reason, we think that this app may be worth a try if you’re looking for a site that only caters to single parent online dating.

  • Membership Cost: Starting at $29.95/month
  • Website: singleparentmatch.com

SingleParentMeet

SingleParentMeet Screenshot

This single parent dating site is one of many projects under the umbrella of People Media. As you might expect it works and functions much like BlackPeopleMeet, JPeopleMeet, OurTime, and the others owned by this company. But how does it work for single moms and dads trying to date online?

Honestly it’s one of the better options within the niche. The main reason being that it has a user base of over 80,000 in the United States. While this doesn’t compare to the number of singles at some on the mainstream dating apps it’s pretty decent for an exclusively single parent dating site.

  • Membership Cost: Starting at $16.99/month
  • Website: singleparentmeet.com

Just Single Parents

Launched in 2015 the goal of this UK-based dating app is pretty clear. They’re trying to match single “mums and dads” through online dating, single parent dating. Great Right?

While there are a some nice features like video clips for profile pages and pre-written icebreakers this site is not without it’s shortcomings. One we found most interesting was that just by signing up for this single parent dating site you become a part of their “shared network”. This means more singles to browse, but ironically, you will no longer be browsing just single parents.

To top that off the brand has been silent on social media since 2015 and honestly has very few reviews even from users. We just can’t recommend this app for single parent dating in 2022.

  • Membership Cost: Starting at £29.95 Monthly
  • Website: justsingleparents.com

Dating for Parents

Dating for Parents Screenshot

Here we have another UK-based dating app for single parents. While the design is sleek and easy to use it’s hard to get over how small the userbase is (Around 10,000 members). While it’s not all bad we find it really hard to justify paying this monthly fee when there are so many great options single parents can use to date online.

We can’t tell you what to do, but if we could we’d say find another single parent dating app. We’ll let you know if this one gets better with time.

  • Membership Cost: $34.99 monthly
  • Website: datingforparents.com

Mums Date Dads

Of the niche dating sites for single parents we have to admit Mums Date Dads has one of the more modern and eye catching designs, single parent dating. Impressive for a site launched in 2009, single parent dating. That being said, not everything looked good to our reviewers.

  • Membership Cost: Starting at $45.92 per month.
  • Website: mumsdatedads.com

With the lowest tier premium subscription coming in at $45.92 per month we just can’t recommend a site like this over a mainstream option with a larger user base, single parent dating. Especially when you consider that there is no mobile app or method of identity verification.

Mums Date Dads Screenshot

Local Single Moms

Local Single Moms Homepage Screenshot

Looking for single mothers in your area? There’s a dating site for that.

While you can “create a profile 100% free”, and even premium pricing is reasonable low, we would caution you to consider you other options before joining this dating site for single moms. The design is dated and as you’ll see by reading user reviews their definition of single parent dating may not line up with yours. On top of this the user base is very small. Don’t expect to ever see more than 500 people online.

  • Membership Cost : $13.33 monthly
  • Website: localsinglemoms.com

Single Parent Love

Owned by Cupid Media, this single parent dating site operated for years as one of the better options in this niche. Unfortunately, single parent dating, as you’ll see in the screenshot the site is no longer in business.

Single Parent Love Screenshot - Closed

So why talk about them? Well, if you like the look and functionality of the Single Parent Love site chances are you’ll like the other sites Cupid Media has to offer. Most of their sites have the same look, feel, single parent dating, and user friendly functionality.

If you’re interested we’ve included some links to reviews of other dating apps by this brand below:

Should You Use a Single Parents Only Dating App?

Ultimately the choice is up to you, but our team would advise against it. Why? Well, like most niche sites, dating apps for singles parents serve a smaller part of the market. What this means is they have a smaller user base. This triggers a cycle that makes the best dating apps get better and better and forces the smaller ones get left behind.

  • More users = more resources
  • More resources = better app features
  • Better app features = even more users… and so on

While niche dating services that focus on single parents may have great intentions they’re just not able to compete at the same level as sites like eHarmony, single parent dating, Zoosk, or Christian Mingle. Interestingly, because of the mass volume of users on these mainstream sites you will find more single parents dating with apps like eHarmony than you will on exclusively single parent dating apps.

Our recommendation would be that single moms and dads try one of the more mainstream online dating options. You can see if you like them risk free by claiming one of the free trials on this page.

She does and single parent dating things without recognizing that to some extent our whole family is dating this guy. This year I came home four times from college and he was in town every single time. After I went back to campus each time Mom said, ‘I never get to see you!’ Yes, well, that’s because you were with your boy.”

Dating for two is difficult; dating in a crowd is downright complicated. The kids are engaged, at least on some level, even when you don’t think they are. And everyone has strong emotions and opinions about who is involved and what the outcome might be. In other words, the whole family is single parent dating. Table for 20!

Here are a number of dating “best practices” for single parents:

1. Realize that you’re not just forming a relationship; you’re creating a family. When kids predate dating, the couple’s relationship inherently creates competing attachments. The choice to be with the dating partner or children generally means the other is left waiting … and wondering how their relationship with you is being influenced by your relationship with the other.

In addition, children commonly feel some insecurity by mom or dad’s relationship with another person. Wise singles recognize this important dynamic and don’t assume that becoming a couple necessarily means that dating this guy for four months can become a family. They attend to both and take time assessing how the potential stepfamily relationships are developing.

2. Avoid a quick turn-around. Parents who begin dating quickly after the end of a relationship (whether by death or divorce) or who reach a quick decision to marry after a brief dating period often find their children more resistant to the marriage. This sabotages the ability of a stepparent and stepchild to get off on the right foot with one another and puts the family at risk.

3, single parent dating. Healthy dating begins with self-examination, single parent dating. Smart singles take a good long look in the mirror before dating. They examine their motivations for dating, fears (e.g., their children not having a father), loneliness, and unresolved hurt (e.g., single parent dating, after divorce). How do you know when you’re ready to date? When you don’t need to.

4, single parent dating. Engage in “What if?” conversations. Even before dating, single parents begin a series of conversations with their children that ask, “What if I began dating? How would you feel?” Periodically, they engage the conversation again and again: “What if Sara and I began dating regularly?” “What if John’s kids came over every Friday through the summer?” “What if she and I were to get engaged?”

Each dialogue is both assessment (How are my kids feeling about these possibilities and realities?) and intervention as it prepares them for what might happen. Smart single parents single parent dating let their children’s emotions dictate their dating progress, but they do listen and give serious consideration to how the children are feeling (becoming a couple is up to you; whether you become a family is up to them). Engage in these conversations throughout your dating experience, especially in anticipation of each stage of a developing relationship.

5. Offer soft invitations to older children.  Teens and adult children need to move toward your dating partner at their own pace. If you make it your agenda to get them to accept your partner and relationship, single parent dating, you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

Instead, make opportunities for them to get to know each other, but don’t force it. Soft invitations such as, “Roger will be having dinner with me on Saturday. You are welcome to join us if you’d like.” Show respect and allow relationships to develop at their own pace.

6. Acknowledge and label child fears, single parent dating. Children of all ages, young to old, benefit when a parent says, “I can see that the idea of my dating scares you. You are missing Mom/our family/etc. and probably don’t want any more changes to our family. I get it. I appreciate your being honest with me.”

Use phrases like “this scares you,” “you’re afraid that our family won’t be the same,” or “you don’t want to have to change schools or leave your friends.” This type of response validates the child’s fears. It also shows them their feelings are important to you, keeps the communication door open, and helps children put labels on their own emotions (which is very important for young children especially).

7. Pace and balance your dating. If you fall in love don’t abandon your kids by spending all of your free time with your newfound love. It’s tempting, single parent dating, but doing so taps your child’s fears that they are losing you and gives the false impression to your dating partner that you are totally available to them. You’re not. Don’t lose your balance.

8. Arrange the “meeting the kids” time with care.  Early on your kids may meet your date, but the first few dates should primarily be about the two of you. At first reference your date as “a friend” or if your kids are prepared, single parent dating, call them your “date.” Casual introductions are fine when you start dating someone, but don’t proactively put your kids and the person together until you are pretty sure there are real possibilities for the relationship. This is especially true for children under the age of five, who can bond to someone you are dating more quickly than you can.

As your interest in the person grows, gradually become more intentional about finding time for your significant other and your kids to get together. Tread lightly at first and continue to monitor and process everyone’s fears or concerns. If the other person has children as well, it might be wise to orchestrate early get-togethers with just one set of children.

You might, for example, engage in an activity with your friend and their children one weekend and then have your friend join you and your kids the next. Navigating multiple new relationships can be overwhelming, single parent dating. Breaking the two families into parts can be helpful initially. Eventually, though, assuming your dating relationship continues to deepen, you’ll want to get everyone together for a shared activity.

9, single parent dating. Expect hot/cold reactions. Liking a parent’s dating partner sometimes creates a loyalty problem for kids: They don’t know how single parent dating embrace everyone and not hurt feelings (especially the other biological parent). Because they are caught in a loyalty conflict, children sometimes warm up nicely to the person you are dating and then turn cold. Sometimes they vacillate back and forth. Don’t panic or judge the children too harshly. Confusion comes with the territory. Relax and work with what they give you.

10. Articulate your silhouette. single parent dating you can’t judge lasting love by physical accoutrements or initial biochemical attractions, you need an objective measure of the qualities, dating in college and the girl flakes, and character of the person you are looking for. But you also need—and here’s where single parents fall short—a silhouette of the type of family you are hoping to create. If the person you are dating isn’t good parent material (with your kids or theirs), for example, you ought to move on. Yes, not liking the fit between the person you are dating and your kids is a deal breaker, even if you love him or her as a partner.

11. Learn all you can about stepfamily living. Nearly 20 years of counseling, coaching, single parent dating, and training blended families has revealed to me this secret of successful blended family couples: They work harder at getting smarter about stepfamily living.

Getting smarter means learning all you can about how stepfamilies function, operate best, and why they have the unique complexities that they do, single parent dating. You may know how to drive a single parent dating, but driving in snow and icy conditions requires a different knowledge and single parent dating set. Nearly all blended families have inclement weather to manage as they drive (especially in the first few years), single parent dating, so adopt the attitude single parent dating a learner.

It was a tough time and I was not prepared for the loneliness I would feel as a single parent.I found myself dreading the weekends when the loneliness of being a single parent was compounded, and feeling guilty that I wasn’t able to really enjoy time with my son.
