The pair first met through a mutual friend while Mills was attending Arizona State University. “It was early Facebook years and I saw a picture on her roommate’s page with her in it,” Young recalled to People. “I finally was able to finagle a group hang and it was pretty platonic.”
Young soon relocated to Orange County, California and was surprised to receive a text from Mills four months later. It was then that they began a long-distance relationship.
“About every other weekend I drove from Orange County to Arizona to see her,” the singer explained.
After graduating, Mills moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Young, however, the pair broke off their six-year relationship when Young moved to Nashville to pursue his country career.
As it turns out, a two-year break is exactly what they needed.
“It was one of those things where we needed to be apart to grow up before we could come back together,” Young acknowledged.
One day, out of the blue, Young sent Mills a text. They caught up and quickly realized that they were both finally in the same place in life and that they were meant to be together. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
After designing a custom ring for his longtime love, the singer planned the perfect proposal, complete with rose petals and champagne. In February 2018, during a stay at the Graduate Hotel in Oxford, Mississippi, Young asked Mills to be his wife.
The couple spent the next few months planning their big day. They tied the knot on November 3, 2018 in front of 200 guests at the Bighorn Gold Club in Palm Desert, California. Things got emotional as they exchanged vows that they had written for each other.
“That’s definitely the moment that was most difficult to get through and not sound like a big baby,” Young confessed. “I cried writing my vows. When you’ve been together for 10 years, on and off, it’s really overwhelming to sit down and put into few words how you feel about somebody.”
After saying “I do,” the couple danced the night away. Their reception featured performances by Gavin DeGraw, Lee Brice and Luke Combs.
“We chose people in terms of performers that are really important to us and are close friends,” Mills explained.
“If everybody in the country music family could’ve been there, we would’ve asked them all to sing,” Young added.
Mills later revealed that she and Young actually wed a few months prior to their big California wedding in a secret ceremony in Nashville.
“We decided not to tell anyone we were married before our wedding day [with the exception of my sister because she’s the best secret keeper.] We didn’t want to take away from our wedding ceremony in November,” she shared on Instagram.
The couple settled into married life at home in Nashville and in the Spring of 2019, shared the news that they were expecting their first child.
Young and Mills later celebrated their gender reveal on social media with a video of Young hitting a baseball that exploded into pink powder.
Their daughter, Presley Elizabeth Young, was born in Nashville on October 21, 2019 and made her debut weighing 8 lbs., 2 oz. and measuring 20.75 inches long.
“We have wanted this for so long and never could we have dreamed of something so beautiful and life-changing,” the couple told People. “She is perfect and we are forever better because she was given to us.”

Early life[edit]
Young was born in Anaheim, Orange County.[1] He attended Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa, California, and then Ole Miss, Irvine Valley College, and Fresno State.[6][7] He started singing in the late 1990s when he stepped in to replace an absent leader of the band during a Christian worship meeting at high school.[7]
Young was a pitcher on his high school baseball team and led the squad to a CIF championship. He went to Ole Miss on a baseball scholarship in 1999 after turning down pre-draft selection by both Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Minnesota Twins.[8][9] In his one season on the Rebel baseball team in 2000, he earned a varsity letter and posted two wins and two saves. He then lettered for one season at Irvine Valley before moving to Fresno.[10] However, his pursuit of a professional baseball career was cut short by an elbow injury while at Fresno in 2003.[11][12]
Music career[edit]
According to Young, he was inspired by Gavin DeGraw after he heard his album Chariot as well as singer/songwriter Jeffrey Steele and decided to return to music.[7] Young independently released a self-titled four-song EP in 2007,[13] then Make Believe in 2011,[14] followed by the albums Brett Young,[15]On Fire,[16] and Broken Down in 2012–13.[17]
After eight years based in Los Angeles, Young moved to Nashville.[18] He was soon signed by the Big Machine Label Group in August 2015.[19]
2016–present: Brett Young EP and album[edit]
In February 2016, Young released a six-song self-titled EP.[11] "Sleep Without You" was released as the first single from the EP in April 2016. Young wrote the song with Justin Ebach and Kelly Archer.[20] The second single to be released from the album "In Case You Didn't Know", was released January 9, 2017. The song was Young's first to reach number one on the Country Airplay chart,[21] and it has been certified 5× Platinum by RIAA.[22] The album's third single, "Like I Loved You" released to country radio on July 17, 2017.
On February 10, 2017, Young released his self-titled debut studio album Brett Young. The album was produced by Dann Huff, and released through Big Machine Label Group. It debuted at number two on the Top Country Albums chart. Brett is currently touring with his band which includes lead guitarist Keaton Simons, drummer Billy Hawn, Keys/guitarist Matt Ferranti, and bass guitarist Noah Needleman.
2018–2020: Ticket to L.A.[edit]
In December 2018, Young released his sophomore album Ticket to L.A..[23] The lead single for the album, "Here Tonight", which he co-wrote with Ben Caver, Justin Ebach and Charles Kelley, was released in September 2018.[24] It reached at number one on the Country Airplay in April 2019. The album's second single, "Catch" released to country radio on June 3, 2019.
2020–present: Weekends Look a Little Different These Days[edit]
In April 2020, Young released the single "Lady", which he wrote about his wife and daughter.[25] It serves as the lead-off single to his third studio album Weekends Look a Little Different These Days, which was released on June 4, 2021.[26] "Lady" reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in April 2021. The album's second single "Not Yet" was released the same month.
In October 2021, Young released a Christmas album Brett Young & Friends Sing the Christmas Classics.[27]
Personal life[edit]
In February 2018, Young got engaged to his girlfriend Taylor Mills.[28] The couple wed in Palm Desert, California on November 3, 2018. On April 6, 2019, they announced they are expecting their first child in the fall 2019.[29][30] Their daughter Presley was born on October 21, 2019.[31] On January 27, 2021, the announced they are expecting their second child in the summer 2021.[32] Their second daughter Rowan was born on July 21, 2021.

Brett Young and Taylor Mills’ marriage was ten years in the making.
The pair first met through a mutual friend while Mills was attending Arizona State University. “It was early Facebook years and I saw a picture on her roommate’s page with her in it,” Young recalled to People. “I finally was able to finagle a group hang and it was pretty platonic.”
Young soon relocated to Orange County, California and was surprised to receive a text from Mills four months later. It was then that they began a long-distance relationship.
“About every other weekend I drove from Orange County to Arizona to see her,” the singer explained.
After graduating, Mills moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Young, however, the pair broke off their six-year relationship when Young moved to Nashville to pursue his country career.
As it turns out, a two-year break is exactly what they needed.
“It was one of those things where we needed to be apart to grow up before we could come back together,” Young acknowledged.
One day, out of the blue, Young sent Mills a text. They caught up and quickly realized that they were both finally in the same place in life and that they were meant to be together. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
After designing a custom ring for his longtime love, the singer planned the perfect proposal, complete with rose petals and champagne. In February 2018, during a stay at the Graduate Hotel in Oxford, Mississippi, Young asked Mills to be his wife.
The couple spent the next few months planning their big day. They tied the knot on November 3, 2018 in front of 200 guests at the Bighorn Gold Club in Palm Desert, California. Things got emotional as they exchanged vows that they had written for each other.
“That’s definitely the moment that was most difficult to get through and not sound like a big baby,” Young confessed. “I cried writing my vows. When you’ve been together for 10 years, on and off, it’s really overwhelming to sit down and put into few words how you feel about somebody.”
After saying “I do,” the couple danced the night away. Their reception featured performances by Gavin DeGraw, Lee Brice and Luke Combs.
“We chose people in terms of performers that are really important to us and are close friends,” Mills explained.
“If everybody in the country music family could’ve been there, we would’ve asked them all to sing,” Young added.
Mills later revealed that she and Young actually wed a few months prior to their big California wedding in a secret ceremony in Nashville.
“We decided not to tell anyone we were married before our wedding day [with the exception of my sister because she’s the best secret keeper.] We didn’t want to take away from our wedding ceremony in November,” she shared on Instagram.
The couple settled into married life at home in Nashville and in the Spring of 2019, shared the news that they were expecting their first child.
Young and Mills later celebrated their gender reveal on social media with a video of Young hitting a baseball that exploded into pink powder.
Their daughter, Presley Elizabeth Young, was born in Nashville on October 21, 2019 and made her debut weighing 8 lbs., 2 oz. and measuring 20.75 inches long.
“We have wanted this for so long and never could we have dreamed of something so beautiful and life-changing,” the couple told People. “She is perfect and we are forever better because she was given to us.”

There are fairytale romances — and then there's the love story of Brett Young and Taylor Mills.
The pair originally met a decade or so before their February 2018 engagement, in Scottsdale, Ariz., while Mills was a student at Arizona State University. They dated for about six years — and even moved to Los Angeles together — but ended up cooling their jets after Young decided to move to Nashville to pursue his music career there.
"I wrote a lot of my first record about her," Young told People in 2018, referring to his 2017 self-titled debut. "There was never any bad blood; it was just the wrong time for us."
Still, they never lost that spark, he added at the time: "We recently got back in touch and realized that we were both finally in the same place and knew it was right."
Naturally, Young's proposal honored their history together, and took place at a hotel near his alma mater, Ole Miss. "I thought it would be romantic to propose where I went to school,” he explained, adding that they were eyeing up ASU as a likely wedding location. “We were able to get a suite with a large covered patio, and the hospitality staff at the hotel set it up while we were at dinner, so it was waiting for us when we got back."
Young's attention to detail extended to Mills' oval-cut diamond ring, which was custom-made by St. Louis-based jeweler David M. Kodner. "I suggested we utilize their initials — playing off Brett’s logo on his website and album,” Kodner tells People.
After weathering distance and breakups, the two emerged stronger on the other side. "She was in all the little beach bars, and at our terrible gigs; she's seen every side of this business," Young told reporters backstage at the 2018 CMA Awards. "Then, when it all finally started happening for me a couple years ago, we were separated. I didn't even realize how much I needed somebody to share this with, because it all makes it so much more meaningful.
"I can't imagine it even being worth it without her at this point," he admitted then. In fact, he told ABC News, even earning a No. 1 single — as he did on the radio airplay charts with "Mercy" in 2018 — feels more meaningful.
"I think No. 1s are never going to get old,” he says. “They’re always one of the most exciting things in this business, but if I didn’t have her to share it with, it wouldn’t mean anything."
After a brief engagement, Young and Mills married in Palm Springs, Calif., on Nov. 3, 2018 -- rather, that was the date of their large, public wedding. In September of 2019, Mills revealed that she and Young legally tied the knot on Aug. 10, 2018, at a Music Row chapel, while Young was home from tour briefly. Except for telling Taylor's sister, they kept the news a secret.
Young and Mills expanded their family in 2019: Daughter Presley Elizabeth was born on Oct. 21 of that year. The singer's single "Lady" is for her; Young wrote it prior to her birth.
