I don’t think I realized the dichotomy of my existence in my body until I first downloaded Tinder in 2014.
I was 24 years old, freshly out of a five-year relationship that basically defined my young adolescence and sexual history. Oh, and I was fat.
No one could have prepared me for that first day on Tinder. The swiping, the options, the faces, just the sheer amount of people who kept popping up on my screen. Within an hour on the app, I had received 100 “likes.”
They tell you there are millions of fish in the sea, but what they don’t tell you is that 95% of those fish are just waiting to insult or fetishize your entire existence in a single sentence.
“Babe you have a body waiting to be fucked.”
“Love your fat tits.”
“I matched with you for your face, and then went to unmatch once I saw your body.”
“I would say let’s go out to dinner but it appears you already ate.”
And the classic: “I don’t date fat chicks, but I’ll come over to fuck you.”
I wish I could say these were isolated events, or that it’s a better world eight years later, but for the most part, it really hasn’t changed. Dating apps have become a destination for fat people to be open to constant humiliation and hurtful messages and a place for us to be boiled down to a single identity: our fatness.
As someone who has spent nearly their entire adult life swiping, liking and flirting on almost every mainstream dating app, I feel like I have earned the right to say: People love to hate fat people, even when they are trying to sleep with them.
And is anyone surprised? We live in a world in which we equate thinness to godliness, so why would our romantic lives look any different? When it’s still OK to hate fat people openly, why would I think random strangers would treat me with respect, especially when there are no consequences beyond a block and delete? Why would I expect to be accepted when fat people aren’t even reflected in the images these platforms use to promote their apps?
Of course, this experience isn’t limited to those of us in bigger bodies.These issues may be even worse for those in other marginalized identities, especially women of color, who are also likely to experience discrimination, fetishization and, to put it simply, hate, when trying to use dating apps.
More than 60% of U.S. women are considered plus-size, or “fat,” individuals, yet when I’m looking at the promotional media, commercials, online dating shows, or Instagram feeds of these businesses, I don’t see even a hint of body diversity. I don’t see myself reflected in a place that should be focusing on attracting all singles just looking for love (or the next one-night stand).
Out of curiosity, I pulled up Tinder’s Instagram feed. After 25 minutes and viewing 154 individual feed posts, I found a singular reel of a visibly plus-size body. One out of 154 posts on what could be deemed the most popular and most used dating site in the country.
The message is clear: You’re not welcome here. Or perhaps more accurately: We do not care for the safety, promotion, or acceptance on our dating app of anyone who doesn’t fit into Eurocentric, fatphobic ideologies of beauty … but yes, we will happily take your $39.99 for a monthly subscription.
So when FeeldCo, a dating site I actually use and like, asked me to collaborate and be a face in their newest campaign around “Radical Honesty” by starring in a reel for social media, the importance wasn’t lost on me.
To me, this was a chance to create positive change in the communities I care about, and to be a face of an industry I have felt left out of my entire life. The reaction to the social media campaign was almost entirely positive, giving me hope that the world is ready to see fat people not only as the best friend, but as the main character going on dates, making out with random cuties, and living an authentically real life.
“Fat” is just one of the amazing adjectives I would use to describe myself. Being allowed full autonomy while not having my fatness either scrutinized or tokenized is the exact place I want to be within my work, my platform and my dating life.
Am I saying Feeld is a safe haven for all those within marginalized bodies? No. Sadly, at this point, I can’t name a singular place in which I feel perfectly safe or allowed to fully exist within my identities.
But a dating app focusing on highlighting all of the wonderful people actually using their product and in their community is a huge milestone toward inclusion. I am very happy my face will be a part of that.
Because, after six-plus years of verbal and emotional abuse simply for looking for a date on Friday night as a fat woman, I want to support companies that support me. I want to feel safe and secure, and most of all, I want to be allowed to have my body be the least interesting thing about me.

As a queer, plus-size woman living in New York City, online dating comes with its own set of challenges. No matter what dating app I’m using—Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid—my experience is almost always the same.
Sometimes, I’ll receive an opening message like “Hey fattie” or “Why would anyone want to date you?” Other times, my matches make the assumption that I’m desperate or down to hook up purely based off of my size. But the majority of the time, matches give me the impression that I should feel “grateful” to have been swiped on in the first place.
This happens almost exclusively in my interactions with heterosexual men, and it’s majorly triggering. I had gotten to the point where I’d given up on thinking I could find anything meaningful on the apps at all. But then one night, I randomly stumbled upon a whole list of dating apps specific for plus-size people.
These apps are marketed for people with body types like mine, which is made obvious with what they’re called: Plusr, Curvy Dating, BBW Dating, Chubby, WooPlus, and BBW Plus Singles. Even though this kind of gave me the ick, I thought that perhaps on an app made specifically for plus-size people like me, I could have a more inclusive experience.
I decided to download WooPlus—mainly because it was the least offensive-sounding one. When I logged in, its interface reminded me of a really low-budget Tinder. There was a swiping component and you had to match with people in order to start talking to them. You could also set your preferences to women or men, but not both, so I decided to try out the “men” section.
Because WooPlus doesn’t have the same volume of users as, say, an app like Tinder, the options were extremely limited. My preferences were set to a 50-mile radius around NYC, but I still matched with men from out of state, which was annoying, but whatever.
As I started swiping through the different profiles, I was, well, unimpressed. One guy’s profile said he was “looking for someone with all the curves and is a freak at the drop of a hat.” Another read, “Big girls are just more to love.” One said, “I want my partner to be thick, curvy, cuddly, and warm. And could turn her freak on when called upon.” Not a great start.
After matching with around 20 people, the messages started to come in and I noticed the conversations followed the same familiar pattern. I would ask my matches how their day was or about their profession, and then boom! Things went from zero to creepy in no time at all.
These strangers, who I matched with only moments earlier, asked me about my breast size, requested nudes or videos of myself masturbating, or asked if I was down to meet right away.
When I declined, the harassment started. One user said I should feel “happy” someone is paying attention to me. Another insinuated that I wasn’t grateful for actually matching with someone who wanted to sleep with me.
These apps make it easier for men to find bodies like mine to fetishize in the first place.
Clearly, these apps were no better than “normal” dating apps. In fact, WooPlus might have just made it easier for men to find bodies like mine to fetishize in the first place.
I deleted the app from my phone after a week. It was clear that while this app marketed itself as “inclusive,” it enabled men looking to sexualize bigger bodies and prey on the women who inhabited them.
And while I understand that apps like WooPlus are attempting to offer plus-size people more options, I believe they’re actually doing more harm than good. Not only did the app allow users to perpetuate the harmful and offensive stereotype that plus-size women are only desirable for their bodies, but it also made me feel worse about myself—even more so than generic dating apps.
I had come on the app looking for a genuine connection and left feeling like I was doing something wrong because I didn’t want to engage with these men’s sexual advances.
Nowadays, there are dating apps for everything and everyone. Really into BDSM? There’s an app for that. Want to find a threesome? There’s an app for that. And hey, maybe they do succeed in creating a community-based platform filled with like-minded people. But the fact that WooPlus and other plus-size apps emphasize someone’s physique as the selling point—or the basis of a potential relationship—is problematic. Being plus-size on these apps made me a target.
So what can we do? I’m not sure. I don’t know what the solution here is. Maybe for me, it’s to delete all the apps and try to meet people “organically.” Because I’d really rather do that—or anything else, really—than spend more time on a dating app that allows users to assume my value because of the size of my body. It’s just not worth my time.

But. as soon as I got the vip pass, the way you search to see people close by or far away changed completely! Before the pass, I was able to see people from closest to furthest away! I seen tons of people just 1,2 to 10 miles away, but all that changed once fat girl dating apps pass was activated. Once my pass was on, my search was almost all random, there was a ton of people who were about an hour away at the top of my list, tried to changed the distance in miles but it’s lowest is 100 for some reason (distance search tool activates when using pass) no matter what I did to my search tools I couldn’t get it to revert to how it was prior to paying for my pass. I reported this in feedback but got no help but some response that essentially said I didn’t know how to use the search features. Though they are the same on all dating apps. I liked the matching and messaging aspects of this app. I also liked that you could not see when others were last online and that it doesn’t link with Facebook; However, it is SUPER glitchy. I had the app for 6 months and was unable to send or reply to any messages for 2.5 of those months—during which which I was paying for a premium subscription. I would get a notification of a message, but the messaging app wouldn’t work, so I couldn’t see what the message actually said. I uninstalled and re-installed the app several times to no avail. Customer service is beyond slow and makes you feel like you’re the one that caused all the glitches in the design of their app. There is also a good chance they wont even respond to your email (I had to send multiple emails just to get a response). After everything was said and done the only compensation offered was 100 coins (which honestly was so stupid because I was paying for a premium subscription—what did I need coins for?) What should have been offered was two additional months for free. Plus, throughout all of this, fat girl dating apps, never once did they acknowledge the actual problem, only that they would “look into it.” I took off four stars for the glitchy app, and the terrible and unprofessional customer support, fat girl dating apps. As a queer, plus-size woman living in New York City, online dating comes with its own fat girl dating apps of challenges. No matter what dating app I’m using—Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid—my experience is almost always the same.
Sometimes, I’ll receive an opening message like “Hey fattie” or “Why would anyone want to date you?” Other times, my matches make the assumption that I’m desperate or down to hook up purely based off of my size. But the majority of the time, matches give me the impression that I should feel “grateful” to have been swiped on in the first place.
This happens almost exclusively in my interactions with heterosexual men, fat girl dating apps, and it’s majorly triggering. I had gotten to the point where I’d given up on thinking I could find anything meaningful on the apps at all. But then one night, I randomly stumbled upon a whole list of dating apps specific for plus-size people.
These apps are marketed for people with body types like mine, fat girl dating apps, which is made obvious with what they’re called: Plusr, Curvy Dating, BBW Dating, Chubby, WooPlus, and BBW Plus Singles. Even though this kind of gave me the ick, I thought that perhaps on an app made specifically for plus-size people like me, I could have a more inclusive experience.
I decided to download WooPlus—mainly because it was the least offensive-sounding one. When I dating site for teachers in, its interface reminded me of a really low-budget Tinder, fat girl dating apps. There was a swiping component and you had to match with people in order to start talking to them. You could also set your preferences to women or men, but not both, so I decided to try out the “men” section.
Because WooPlus doesn’t have the same volume of users as, say, an app like Tinder, the options were extremely limited. My preferences were set to a 50-mile radius around NYC, but I still matched with men from out of state, which was dating men in fraternities reddit, but whatever.
As I started swiping through the different profiles, I was, well, unimpressed, fat girl dating apps. One guy’s profile said he was “looking for someone with all the curves and is a freak at the drop of a hat.” Another read, “Big girls are just more to love.” One said, “I want my partner to be thick, curvy, cuddly, and warm. And could turn her freak on when fat girl dating apps upon.” Not a great start.
After matching with around 20 people, fat girl dating apps, the messages started to come in and I noticed the conversations followed the same familiar pattern. I would ask my matches how their day was or about their profession, and then boom! Things went from zero to creepy in no time at all.
These strangers, who I matched with only moments earlier, asked me about my breast size, requested nudes or videos of myself masturbating, or asked if I was down to meet right away.
When I declined, the harassment started. One user said I should feel “happy” someone is paying attention to me. Another insinuated that I wasn’t grateful for actually matching with someone who wanted to sleep with fat girl dating apps.
These apps make it easier for men to find bodies like mine to fetishize in the first place.

I deleted the app from my phone after a week. It was clear that while this app marketed itself as “inclusive,” it enabled men looking to sexualize bigger bodies and prey on the women who inhabited them.
And while I understand that apps like WooPlus are attempting to offer plus-size people more options, I believe they’re actually doing more harm than good. Not only did the app allow users to perpetuate the harmful and offensive stereotype that plus-size women are only desirable for their bodies, but it also made me feel worse about myself—even more so than generic dating apps.
I had come on the app looking for a genuine connection and left feeling like I was doing something wrong because I didn’t want to engage with these men’s sexual advances.
Nowadays, there are dating apps for everything and everyone. Really into BDSM? There’s an app for that. Want to find a threesome? There’s an app for that. And hey, maybe they do succeed in creating a community-based platform filled with like-minded people. But the fact that WooPlus and other plus-size apps emphasize someone’s physique as the selling point—or the basis of a potential relationship—is problematic. Being plus-size on these apps made me a target.
So what can we do? I’m not sure. I don’t know what the solution here is. Maybe for me, it’s to delete all the apps and try to meet people “organically.” Because I’d really rather do that—or anything else, really—than spend more time on a dating app that allows users to assume my value because of the size of my body. It’s just not worth my time.

I don’t see myself reflected in a fat girl dating apps that should be focusing on attracting all singles just looking for love (or the next one-night stand).
Out of curiosity, I pulled up Tinder’s Instagram feed. After 25 minutes and viewing 154 individual feed posts, I found a singular reel of a visibly plus-size body. One out of 154 posts on what could be deemed the most popular and most used dating site in the country.
The message is clear: You’re not welcome here. Or perhaps more accurately: We do not care for the safety, promotion, or acceptance on our dating app of anyone who doesn’t fit into Eurocentric, fatphobic ideologies of beauty … but yes, we will happily take your $39.99 for a monthly subscription.
So when FeeldCo, a dating site I actually use and like, asked me to collaborate and be a face in their newest campaign around “Radical Honesty” by starring in a reel for social media, the importance wasn’t lost on me.
To me, this was a chance to create positive change in the communities I care about, and to be a face of an industry I have felt left out of my entire life. The reaction to the social media campaign was almost entirely positive, giving me hope that the world is ready to see fat people not only as the best friend, but as the main character going on dates, making out with random cuties, and living an authentically real life.
“Fat” is just one of the amazing adjectives I would use to describe myself. Being allowed full autonomy while not having my fatness either scrutinized or tokenized is the exact place I want to be within my work, my platform and my dating life.
Am I saying Feeld is a safe haven for all those within marginalized bodies? No. Sadly, at this point, I can’t name a singular place in which I feel perfectly safe or allowed to fully exist within my identities.
But a dating app focusing on highlighting all of the wonderful people actually using their product and in their community is a huge milestone toward inclusion. I am very happy my face will be a part of that.
Because, after six-plus years of verbal and emotional abuse simply for looking for a date on Friday night as a fat woman, I want to support companies that support me. I want to feel safe and secure, and most of all, I want to be allowed to have my body be the least interesting thing about me.

I’ve tried every major dating app you can imagine in my quest for “The One” (or as I like to say – One of The Ones). I’ve seen it ALL – the good, the meh, and the wtf. Chances are that you have too, considering 30% of American adults have used a dating app. There’s oodles of articles out there to recommend which dating applications to try out, but so far none of them have really given the perspective of a 21st Century Fat Woman.

Most dating apps were built to attract a 25 year old straight-size woman and the average 30 year old cisgender, hetero man. I’m a 35 year old fat girl dating apps, hetero, cisgender, Fat Woman, so my experiences on a dating app are going to be a little different. If you’re a Fat Woman debating whether or not to give it a try, go for it! Whether you’re swiping, double tapping, winking, fat girl dating apps, or liking, there are useful and awful things about every dating app.
The Good:
Bumble
Bumble has been around for about five years now, and it lives up to the hype, fat girl dating apps. I have found more matches on Bumble that I actually enjoyed meeting than with any other app. A swiping-only app, Bumble focuses more on the woman’s free dating greenville sc of view and experience, so all matches’ conversations must be initiated by the woman. This rules out so much harassment and noise. You get fewer matches and conversations, but it’s quality over quantity. The only time I ever received a wholly inappropriate message, I reported it and the issue was addressed within the hour. One of the oldest dating apps of the bunch – OKCupid has evolved a lot since it started. The hallmark of this app is its heavy emphasis on information and compatibility testing. You can spend hours going through their quiz functionality and entering more information to make higher matches. This app also has an added swiping feature for a simpler experience. OKC is very inclusive for non-binary and queer people, and welcoming of the kink community. Messaging is iffy, fat girl dating apps, because anyone can message or comment on anyone’s profile, opening you up to the possibility of gross messages. For what it’s worth, this app generated three big relationships for me, which fell apart entirely because MEN (amiright?) and not because of the app itself. Thumbs up!
Dating App Tip: Never put your full name or workplace on your app profile.
OurTime
Ok, ok…. I’m 35, but I made my mom (a curvy, beautiful 71 year old) an account dating older woman redddit OurTime to try to open her up to dating again. This app was built for Boomers, for sure. Think lots of “Must Love Dogs” and “The Symphony” types. One thing is for sure from my experiences as the administrator for her account: The Medicare Set is a very friendly place for curvy or Fat Women. Mom had fat girl dating apps of matches from this app of varying degrees of quality and interest. If you’re an active senior, this is definitely a great place to meet other silver foxes.
Dating App Tip: It’s always a good idea to do a phone call or video chat before meeting up, especially amidst a global pandemic.
The Meh:
Tinder
Even your Nana knows what Tinder is! Tinder has a reputation for being a hook-up app, and that’s not wrong. This app revolutionized the dating app scene years ago with the concept of simple swiping left or right on a profile picture only. Within a millisecond, we can decide to say “Hey baby,” or “Thank you, fat girl dating apps, next.” The bio sections are a meager few dozen characters in length, with emphasis on photos instead of information. Messaging only can happen when two people both swipe right on each other, and in my heteronormative experience, Tinder men swipe right on just about everyone. A downside of this app is messaging – men can message first. My Tinder messages have more pictures of male genitalia in them than my college anatomy textbook. Sadly, fat girl dating apps, I received the most fatphobic comments from matches on Tinder, fat girl dating apps. The sheer volume of users is the best benefit here – the stats are on your side. The Bad:
Hinge
A relative newcomer to the dating app scene, I have heard so many straight-size, 20-something people tell me what wonderful luck that they have had on this app. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a Fat Woman or if it’s because I’m over 30, but this has not been my fat girl dating apps. Hinge gives you question prompts instead interracial central dating site a general profile, so you answer inane questions like “3 Things I Can’t Live Without” or “Never Have I Ever” instead of anything substantial about your life or personality. Try it and see, but I could take or leave this one. My first date from Hinge was such an epic fail – we mutually agreed on our loathing of each other and wished we could have known more personality info before agreeing to meet. We fat girl dating apps we shared a love of tacos and Target, but that was all.

I’m grouping the two paid services together because my experience with them has been roughly the same. I have heard from two of my over-40 friends that they have had much more quality matches on these apps than the free ones, but no long-term success. Dating App Tip: Always tell a friend where you are going when you meet up with someone from an app. Screenshot their profile and phone number and send it to your friend so they have it handy.
The WTF:
WooPlus & Bustr
These are lesser known apps, but I wanted to include them in the breakdown because they are marketed as dating apps specifically for plus/Fat people, fat girl dating apps. I group them together because they are nearly indistinguishable in format. I do not recommend either of these if you are looking to actually date. The free version offers absolutely no filters, so you can end up seeing messages from men literally thousands of miles from you, of any age or status, who you have not matched/liked. Most of the men on these apps are not actually Fat themselves, but are looking specifically caught my girlfriend on a dating site “BBW,” primarily for hookups. I struggle with the concept of being fetishized as a Fat Woman, though I think there are likely some women who are perfectly fine with it. Within the first 24 hours of being on both of these apps, I had 50 messages in total, half of which were from would-be sugar daddies or very small men who asked me to sit on them. If that’s your kink – this is the app for you! If not, you may want fat girl dating apps pass.

Dating App Tip: If you’re interested, give it a try!
There are dozens more apps that exist out there, and the perfect one has yet to be created. The key to a successful dating app experience is to be as honest as you can and reveal as much of your true self as possible. Don’t be afraid to post that full body pic or go unfiltered – you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, no matter how Insta-worthy you are. Don’t be afraid to be specific about what you want, but be open to people you wouldn’t normally pick in a lineup. Swipe safe and wear a mask!
