CNBC.com is not the likeliest forum for a debate about dating. But when the financial news site does broach the topic, it's probably the only place that discusses courtship in terms of "call options" and "unmet arbitrage opportunities."

Here's how it all started. Jennifer Wright at TheGloss.com recently asked CNBC financial reporter John Carney, and nine other "smart men," why so many studies indicate that men prefer dating women who are less intelligent than they are. Carney chalked the phenomenon up to today's "knowledge economy." Less intelligent women have more leisure time because they aren't financially rewarded for staying in school or working long hours, Carney reasoned, and they seek out a smart partner as a means of "economic advancement." As Carney put it, "dumb chicks have both greater opportunities and greater incentives to try harder to date smart men than smart women do."

Carney says a hardworking hedge funder who Wright interviewed provided a similar explanation, asserting that successful men (like him, presumably) date less successful women not because they want "women to be dumb" but rather because they want "someone who prioritizes their life in a way that’s compatible with how you prioritize yours." The hedge funder, for example, dates a kindergarten teacher, and a kindergarten teacher "has a more flexible schedule, she’ll be able accommodate me," he explains. Kindergarten teachers, we imagine, are unlikely to appreciate the implicit connection the hedge funder makes between their profession and an inferior degree of professional success.

"So is this just a Wall Street trope? Or are me and the anonymous hedge fund guy onto something?" Carney asks.

CNBC's Nicole Lapin doesn't think Carney's onto anything. Smart women have the same incentives as less intelligent women to date smart men, she contends: "First, if there is indeed more competition for [smart men] ... we all know that we 'Type A' working women love a good fight. Second, smart women don't shut their brains off on the weekend. (Shocker: Smart men don't either.)." To prove her case, Lapin recalls being turned off by a guy on a recent date because he didn't get an allusion to Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's "I know it when I see it" ruling on pornography in Jacobellis v. Ohio (1964). I mean, c'mon! How do you expect to win the girl without a firm understanding of legal precedent?

Lapin goes on to dismiss the idea that men are interested in less intelligent women: "You guys think you want that, until you're bored to tears and melt her plastic bits. Until you need to take her to a State dinner and she can't smile her way out of it. Until you lose your Wall Street job and she still doesn't understand what you do enough to help you through it, as a partner, an equal, much less stand by a poor guy."

If smart women indeed only want to marry smart men, Carney retorts, and if smart men "are willing to date outside of their IQ cohort," then it follows that smart men are more open-minded than smart women, and that less intelligent men are at a disadvantage when it comes to marriage. Carney speculates why this might be the case, in terms only a Wall Streeter could employ. It gets pretty technical.

In the "knowledge economy," Carney says, intelligent people, unlike less intelligent people, hava a "call option" on their relationships in that they can end them to focus on their careers. In a rational dating world, he continues, smart men discount smart women because of their call options. But smart women don't appear to be discounting smart men in the same way. "Whatever the answer is," Carney concludes, "it is creating an unmet arbitrage opportunity--an overabundance of intelligent, single women and an over-abundance of less intelligent, single men."

Intelligence is part of her attractiveness. So it raised a few eyebrows last week to hear her speaking of her brain not as an asset, but as a hindrance.

Talking to the U.S. radio shock jock Howard Stern, Beckinsale was pressed several times to reveal her IQ. On calling her mother live on the show, it transpired that, as a child, her IQ was measured at 152 — not Einstein levels but comfortably in the ‘highly gifted’ range.

Gracefully, Beckinsale deprecated her whopping brainpower and suggested her intelligence had been more of a drawback than a help to her Hollywood career.

Cue a chorus of derision: one website accused her of a ‘cringeworthy humble brag’, another jibed ‘sounds hard to be this hot and smart’. Unwittingly, these pea-brained critics were underlining her point: that a woman must be careful not to display her intelligence lest she gets taken down a peg for being arrogant.

Beckinsale wrote furiously in response: ‘Are we really still requiring women to dumb themselves down in order not to offend?’ No woman, she stormed, ‘should feel they need to lie or dumb down under ANY circumstances so as not to be a target’.

Amen, sister. I have no idea what my IQ is but with a Masters degree, a few children’s books published and a former career as a No 10 adviser, I’d say I am cleverer than average. On many occasions, though, I have put the emphasis on the average over the clever.

Why? Because from a young age we absorb what will make us attractive to the opposite sex.

We learn that men don’t like nerds and bluestockings, know- it-alls and brainboxes. They like women ditzy and wide-eyed, clueless and cute.

Beckinsale mentioned a survey which found that 60 per cent of women had ‘dumbed themselves down’ on a date in order to impress a man. I can well believe it, because I’ve done it myself.

During my single years, I worked as chief speechwriter to the then prime minister David Cameron. Though I was proud of this position, I also knew that, to many men, it would be as attractive as halitosis. They would make assumptions: that I was unfeminine; that I would bore on about politics. Bang on about fiscal policy and, in Scooby Doo terms, you have just switched from Daphne to Velma.

And so, shameful as it is to admit, I often lied about what I did for a living. On one speed-dating night, given three minutes with each chap, I told the first that I made teddy bears, the next I was a tennis coach and the third I was a secretary.

This was quite amusing until we all headed to the bar to continue our chats en masse. With one man prattling on to me about tennis and another about teddies, it wasn’t long before my fraud was exposed.

The dumbing down, I am ashamed to say, even contin-ued into some actual relat-ionships. One boyfriend used to get irritated if I called out more answers than him while watching University Challenge.

Initially, I trilled the answers I knew happily: ‘Phosphorescence!’ ‘King Richard III!’ ‘Bruch’s First Symphony!’ This was fine if he was trilling, too, but I noticed he would fall into a glowering mood if I ‘won’. And so it was easier to keep shtum, or admit to knowing only a couple of answers.

This is quite common for women, I think: we shrink to fit men’s desires. Many men would protest that they love intelligent, opinionated women — and I’m sure some do, but a fascinating survey from 2015 showed how fragile this attraction can be.

Researchers asked 105 men whether they would like to date a woman who had either outperformed or underperformed them academically. The men ranked the women who had outperformed them as being more desirable. So far, so feminist.

But in the second part of the study, the men were asked to take an intelligence test and then told they would shortly be meeting a woman who had outperformed them on it.

Faced with the prospect of a real-life smart cookie, the men ‘distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive and showed less desire to... plan a date with her’. The authors concluded that ‘feelings of diminished masculinity accounted for men’s decreased attraction towards women who outperformed them’.

And there we have it — the core reason why some men seem to be ‘triggered’, in Kate Beckinsale’s words, by female intelligence. It’s not straightforward misogyny. It is a desire to be masculine.

As controversial as it may be to state these days, men and women are very different in many ways, but united as prisoners of our biology. On the one hand, women often like being given the opportunity to care for someone, to mop brows and attend sick beds.

Likewise, many men are hardwired to want to protect. If they perceive a woman to be weaker and more vulnerable, it stirs an ancient desire to defend.

It follows, then, that if a woman has three degrees and speaks fluent Mandarin, she may be less vulnerable, less in need of their protection and thus less attractive.

This isn’t true of all men, of course; George Clooney happily professes he is the ‘arm candy’ for his lawyer wife Amal — and my own husband, a surgeon, likes that we are clever in different ways.

But something in the hearts of many men melts at ditziness and hardens at cleverness. For intelligent women, the answer is not to ‘shrink to fit’ as I used to do, but to be defiantly, proudly ourselves.

Jennifer Wright from thegloss.com interviewed seemingly smart men to find the answer to the time old question: do men prefer dumb girls and if so… why.

Well we read her findings, and here’s what we found:

Smart Men Love A Woman Who Has Time To Clean

Men want women who have more flexible schedules and can prioritize… well, them. They want women who have time to clean (and cook) and can generally revolve their lives around his schedule.

Basically, smart women tend to be more career focused which means they don’t have as much time to “accommodate” each and every one of their mans needs.

Smart Men Think Dumb Girls Are More Vulnerable (Which Is Hot)

According to one gentleman, beneath these “ditsy vodka-and-cranberry drinking dame is an underlying vulnerability” which we can only suppose is a turn on for him. Whereas career women, who may be able to buy themselves the house are deemed less attractive, purely because they’re less needy.

8. She’s humble.

She doesn’t brag, she just does her thing, and has lots of chill. Slow and steady wins the race! Seriously, she’s probably never angry and when she is, she could probably keep her chill and have that very mature conversation about taking out the trash with you without yelling.

9. People think she doesn’t care—or even worse, is too stupid to care.

In reality, she’s secretly sitting in her house getting ahead of the game. Isn’t that great? You will be the smart one. You will actually know this time around that when you get into an argument, you will be right. You will be in control. It would be like you’re the hero and she’s your sidekick. Isn’t that the reality everyone wants to live?

Dating a less successful woman isn’t about wanting women to be dumb. It’s about wanting someone who prioritizes their life in a way that’s compatible with how you prioritize yours.

The bookstores are littered with bestselling titles by self-styled 'pickup artists' offering their own very special gyan on how to get some T&A. They purport to answer that ultimate question: what do women want? Or more accurately, who women are. The answer easily summed up in a string of adjectives: insecure, dating a dumb girl, gullible, eager to please, shallow and, oh yes, stupid.

And just in time for raksha bandhan — the celebration of a chaster bond between man and woman — the venerable Hindu brings us the desi version of the pickup artist manual. Because, really, what could be more appropriate. And to ensure that it has that newsworthy hook, dating a dumb girl, writer Sudish Kamath opens with this helpful suggestion:

Surely the greatest aspiration of any pyaari behena is to pimp for her beloved bro— secure in the knowledge that he isn't looking out for her, but a bit too much at her closest friends.

So pay attention, boys, here's lesson number one: All women exist to serve your libido.

Lesson number two: Women are and will ever dating a dumb girl overgrown, swooning teenagers. Ergo, get ready to make grand — sorry "cute" and "corny" — gestures inspired by B-grade romcoms: "Love stories always sell because of how boy meets girl. So you need a solid meet cute story. One that is so memorable that it makes you a legend in her circles." Yeah, because we all sit around, all giddy and giggly, in our pink pajamas, as we squeal, "That's so cute, yaaar!"

The big but: Don't try any of those pickup lines, intones the wise author. Yes, why talk in cliches when you can act like one, instead.

Lesson number three: All a girl wants is to make all the other girls green.with envy.

Every "pickup" guide has some version of this beauty. Pay attention to the friend so she becomes sufficiently jealous to vie for your attentions. Or arrive at the bar with a pretty friend on your arm to effect the same. What woman can resist the temptation to "score" over her peers by scoring with you? Kamath offers this unique variation on the theme:

Aww, I can't think of anything that will make me feel more special than being someone's Plan B.

And if nothing else works, Kamath offers us this "fail safe" strategy: "Buy up the opening show of the next Twilight movie. Now you have all the tickets, make sure everyone on Facebook and Twitter knows about this, dating a dumb girl. Now, you control who sits where. You can get any girl to sit with you."

OMG, OMG, I'm so hot and sweaty over Robert Pattz that I'm going to totally make out with the next guy, or rather the guy right next to me.

Ok, maybe the headline should read ".get any [13 year old] girl to go out with you" — except the guy's old enough to make the moolah required to buy up an opening show? Oh, okay, the ultimate guide to statutory rape, then. Now, why didn't The Hindu just say so?

A silly newspaper article wouldn't be worth picking on if it weren't for the fact that almost all such "guides" to sexual success sound all the same notes. Is it sexism? Sure, but also of the saddest kind. These kinds of articles/books are popular because they offer the reassurance to socially awkward and lonely men that women are unidimensional caricatures to be easily acquired by following a prescribed formula. It's reassuring. It's also untrue.

Ever wonder why some women, despite being seemingly smart, sexy and well-educated find it near impossible to find, attract and keep a man?

Well one woman took it upon herself to find out where the hell they’re going wrong and it seems the answer to the time old dating conundrum is that, intelligence is not hot.

Jennifer Wright from thegloss.com interviewed seemingly smart men dating a dumb girl find the answer to the time old question: do men prefer dumb girls and if so… why.

Well we read her findings, and here’s what we found:

Smart Men Love A Woman Who Has Time To Clean

Men want women who have more flexible schedules and can prioritize… well, them. They want women who have time to clean (and cook) and can generally revolve their lives around his schedule.

Basically, dating a dumb girl, smart women tend to be more career focused which means they don’t have as much time to “accommodate” each and every one of their mans needs.

Smart Men Think Dumb Girls Are More Vulnerable (Which Is Hot)

According to one gentleman, beneath these “ditsy vodka-and-cranberry drinking dame is an underlying vulnerability” which we can only suppose is a turn on for him. And as if that wasn’t offensive enough, dating a dumb girl, another young man added: “If the women we date are dumb, then we have the upper hand in the relationship”.

Which means what? Men are turned on by weak and dainty women? And if we expect to bag ourselves a man we had better start pretending we can’t open our own ketchup bottles and need every film we watch together explaining to us?

Smart Men Think That “Dumb Chicks” Try Harder

One gent who was interviewed (John Carney) did find it important to remind us that “dumb chicks” (his words not mine) try harder to find a smart mate, in order to economically advance themselves. Whilst smart women are too busy trying to educate themselves and work their way up the career ladder.

I can only assume what he means, is that women who don’t have their own steady income are more likely to throw themselves at the first successful man they come across in order to secure themselves that lavish 5 bedroom house with the walk in wardrobe they’d always imagined.

And men like that.

Whereas career women, who may be able to buy themselves the house are deemed less attractive, purely because they’re less needy.

Smart Men Like Women Who Agree With Them

And i quote “if the women we date are dumb, then we have the upper hand in the relationship”.

What he didn’t add, but I’m sure was implied is that dumb women are also easier to fool, which is always handy when you’re a bit of a douche.

Smart Men Think Dumb Girls Are Pretty

Another one added: “I’ve dated some dumb girls and it’s just dating a dumb girl they were hot. That was it. Maybe dumb girls spend more time on their physical appearance”.

Basically implying that if you work 5 days a week, the chances are you don’t have time to also be waxed, shaved and plucked to perfection.

“Every guy wants the hot waitress because every other guy is going for the waitress”. Meaning what? That the only thing that really matters when it comes to dating, is that your chick is hotter than that other guys chick?

But wait. Before you all rush to hide your CV’s, delete your impressive LinkedIn profile’s and try and convince the guy you like that, you don’t suffer from an off-putting case of “the smarts” there is a glimmer of hope.

His name is Matt Langer (also known as the only sane man who took part in this survey) and he would like to remind us that some men, namely him, “consider editors in chief of online women’s magazines to be far sexier than cocktail waitresses”. Phew.

Because let’s be honest no truly smart woman was ever going to dumb herself down for a man. And none of us are ready to make any till-death-do-us-part promises dating a dumb girl any sort of battery operated devices either.

As for the rest of the men in the survey, well we think that for so called “smart dating a dumb girl they were saying some pretty stupid things. Because although intelligent women might be hard work in some respects, they also come with a whole lot of perks. They buy their own cars, they can hold a conversation with your mum and when their looks fade, you’re left with someone who actually understands your jokes… and believe me, one day that will matter.
