In 2019, we're busy, we're stressed, and we're constantly faced with a myriad of distractions that can make wading into the dating pool seem like getting drowned in a raging sea. So yes, dating is a lot, and it's clear we could all use a little insight (and commiseration) about the whole process. That's why Shondaland decided to take a 360-degree look at the state of dating today, from the struggles and the successes to how we're meeting new people — dating apps, DMs, and more — or how we're sometimes, well, not.

Volume One: Colleen
THE DATER: Colleen, 25, a wholesale manager for a beauty brand based in the South
For five-plus years, Colleen has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the standard trio of dating apps: Hinge, Bumble, Tinder. So far, she says most of her matches have felt like “a waste of time.” Her inbox is stacked with “Hey” after “Hey” from bland guys with whom she has zero chemistry, and who rarely engage her in conversations about her own interests. Among her lengthy list of duds is the Atlanta Falcons player who commented on her photo with a tired pick-up line (that, at least, resulted in an entertaining screenshot for her friends) and the creepy guy who claimed to coincidentally “run into her” one night while she was out with friends and proceeded to follow her around for the evening.
THE EXPERT:Damona Hoffman
Hoffman jokes that she’s been coaching online daters “since they used to do profiles on stone tablets.” In addition to one on one coaching, Hoffman frequently does public speaking engagements on the subject, offers an online course, and hosts a weekly podcast calledDates & Mates. She thinks of dating profiles as a form of storytelling, and helps clients craft “narratives” designed to engage exactly the people they’re hoping to meet, as opposed to profiles that could appeal to anyone. “You could get a lot of messages, but if they’re a lot of the wrong messages, or you’re not [going] on dates with the right kind of people, then it feels exhausting, frustrating and overwhelming,” Hoffman says.
We asked Hoffman to review Colleen’s profile and come up with actionable tips that will help this “meh” dater find an authentic connection.
McKenna Pahl
Decide what (and who) you want, and build a profile that reflects it
Exhibit A: Colleen says her Hinge matches are “all over the place" — she attracts a broad range of guys with seemingly no common denominator.
Hoffman chalks that up to a profile that doesn’t accurately portray what Colleen’s looking for: a real relationship — i.e., not flings or on-again, off-again flirtations — with someone who makes her laugh.
Step one: Think about the message your photos are sending. Colleen earns points for posting an action shot of herself snowboarding and a cute pic with her dog — both of which do a good job of depicting different aspects of her life. But her bikini-clad primary photo suggests she’s looking to play.
Hoffman’s all for body positivity, but warns that guys are easily distracted. If you’re looking to hook up, super. But “If you’re looking for a relationship, the idea you want to set it up is that there’s more that can be revealed over time. You want to hint at certain things,” she says. As for a bigger reveal, “let him earn it” over time.
Hoffman’s advice: switch to something more subtle, and cut down on photos that feature alcohol to lessen the profile's "party vibe."
McKenna Phan
Check off the “three Cs”
Hoffman swears by three key ingredients: Color, context and character. The first is relatively straightforward: a vibrant top or dress — especially in stop-sign red — can make someone pause from swiping and take notice. Hoffman cites2008 research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, which suggested that portraits outlined in red were more attractive to men than identical portraits framed in other colors. “Lean into the biological conditioning,” Hoffman says.
The second “C,” is context: Choose photos, like Colleen’s skiing shot, that depict you out in your world, whether it’s playing soccer with a weekend league or perusing your local indie bookstore. That said, if the app you’re using has the potential to link to Instagram (Tinder, Bumble and Hinge all do) Hoffman recommends opting out. It may seem counterintuitive, but in a culture of speed-swiping, you’re aiming to curate what someone needs to know about you without overwhelming them with TMI. Hoffman suggests that Colleen un-link her social media, add more active photos, and remove any visual information that isn’t straightforward. For instance, adorable photos with her niece could, at a glance, appear to be photos with her daughter.
Character, Hoffman’s final “C,” means showcasing the different aspects of your personality. Colleen displayed her wit and sports knowledge on Hinge’s “When was the last time you cried?” question: she answered with, "a football game." But Hoffman found answers to two other profile questions confusing. And since Colleen specifically seeks a guy with a sense of humor, Hoffman encouraged her to add a few more fun, laughing photos.
McKenna Phan
Take matters into your own hands
Friends had advised Colleen to wait for potential dates to come to her, so she tends to take a passive approach online, shying away from exploring guys who haven’t reached out to her first.
Don’t be coy, says Hoffman. If you’re not satisfied with who you’re meeting, take action: Hoffman says women who send more messages snag more dates with higher-quality potential partners. “Whatever people are thinking about the rules of chivalry, or guys not wanting to be chased, is totally incorrect,” she says. “I work with men as well, and they’re always flattered when women message them.” Men also receive fewer messages, “so they’re not inundated the way women are with this wide swath of anybody and everybody.” The odds are likely already in your favor. Hoffman says you’re “much more likely to get a response from him” than if he were to message you and get lost in the inbox.
The key: Send a targeted, thoughtful message to the type of person you’re interested in meeting. Usually, this means commenting on or asking questions about the information on that person’s profile.
SO, DID IT WORK?
Colleen tweaked her profile according to Hoffman’s suggestions, resulting in a version she feels is now more authentic and a better representation of who she is. Within a week, she saw a significant change in her matches. For starters, there are fewer of them — Colleen used to receive 10 or more connections a day. Now, she’s averaging about three or four.
At first, that was a blow to the self esteem, but soon Colleen realized she was filtering out some of the guys who weren’t in line with what she’s looking for. The changes are doing most of the “dirty work” for her, Colleen says. Before, Colleen received a lot of generic messages, now she sees an uptick in guys sending jokes, witty comments, and even some original pick-up lines. She says she’s even passed along Hoffman’s advice to her friends.
DATING BY THE NUMBERS
Brianna Ellis-Mitchel
Volume Two: Madison
THE DATER: Madison, 25, works in entertainment industry PR in New York City
Three years ago, Madison started online dating to meet different kinds of people and have new experiences. Now she’s in search of someone who, like her, is looking to take a permanent vacation from dating apps. And her recent matches barely spark her interest.
THE EXPERT: Erika Ettin, founder of online dating consultancyA Little Nudge
When Washington, D.C.-based Ettin first tried online dating in 2001, she put her background in economics and finance to work crafting her profile, even tracking her results in a spreadsheet. She experimented with different strategies until she was receiving responses to six out of 10 of the messages she was sending and had hit a message-to-date conversion rate of 50 percent. In 2011, she went pro and founded her consulting company, which has helped more than 1,000 clients.
Ettin gives Madison’s profile a tune-up, offering tips to avoid online dating burnout, stay organized, and attract the types she wants to meet.
McKenna Pahl
Stay organized
Online dating can feel like picking up a side gig. When Madison spoke with Ettin, she was juggling five conversations and two different date offers with various guys. Ettin advised her to fully commit to one app rather than half-heartedly using a handful, and to limit herself to ongoing text chats with five potential dates at a time.
Ettin also had Madison go through her inbox and make a conclusive decision on each of her current prospects: Either set up a date or stop chatting. And instead of just ghosting the ones she decides not to meet IRL, Ettin advised her to send a brief, polite note: “I thought about it, and I don’t think we’re a match. Best of luck!” Then “unmatch” the person to cut down on confusion while scrolling through your inbox.
Ettin’s other strategies to avoid app burnout? Go through your list of “likes” only once or twice a day: The more you do it, the more overwhelmed you’re likely to feel. If you’re battling a busy week, take a break from swiping altogether. And respond to incoming messages the day you receive them; it’s best to just get it out of the way.
McKenna Pahl
Make sure the spotlight is on you — and only you
In her profile photos, Madison included shots with a couple of friends and one large group photo. If you look closely, you can see why: One featured her and her brother at the Tony Awards; another featured Madison and a large group supporting the "SCAR Act," a New York State Senate bill that would require the tracking of displaced immigrant children. They provided detailed evidence of how cool and how civic-minded she is. If you’re looking closely. To the average speed-swiper, the Tonys shot could read as a date. And sadly, since few people will likely take the time to look up the bill’s meaning, Ettin argued that the photo's value was negligible.
Ettin recommends solo shots only: You're looking to communicate who you are and what you look like. Why invite potential comparisons? “I want people to know I have friends,” said Madison, echoing a common dating app concern. But according to Ettin, potential matches are more interested in checking out your appearance and gauging your personality than analyzing your social life.
McKenna Pahl
Accentuate the positive
To this profile prompt, “I’ll know I’ve found the one when…,” Madison replied, “We plan our joint campaigns.” Ettin loved that. But she red-flagged another line Madison wrote: “You get your news from somewhere other than your Facebook feed.” [Editor’s note: For what it’s worth, we applaud the sentiment.]
Ettin’s job is raising her clients odds. She tells them to play it safe, avoiding anything that could read as snark or negativity. Ettin encouraged Madison to re-package the same idea more positively (for example, “You read the New York Times”). Or at least rearrange the sentence so it ends on a positive note.
Madison’s solution: “I’ll brag about you to my friends if… You know your way around a wine list (rioja all day), get your news from somewhere other than your Facebook feed, and your shoes match your belt!”
SO, DID IT WORK?
In a word, yes. Shortly after she reworked her profile with solo shots and upbeat language, Madison started getting more matches with guys who seem more engaged
and were definitely more attractive."The matches I’m getting are responding to my question/answer sections of my profile more than ever before, and if I’m not replying back right away, a lot of them are following up," she says.
And although narrowing her focus to just one app—she chose Hinge—felt counter-intuitive to Ettin’s other advice (“keep your options open”), allowing herself to be pickier means she’s not wasting energy on guys who don’t seem to have real potential. Why choose Hinge over Bumble? "I like that anyone can comment on or 'like' a photo, versus waiting for a match, or on Bumble, waiting for the woman to make the first move."
“This process allowed me to do a reset,” Madison says. “Taking the time to sit down and think, ‘What am I really looking for?,’ and not being afraid to end a conversation if I don’t see it going anywhere.” She feels less overwhelmed and “re-energized to get back out there and do it again with a better outlook.”
Volume Three: Shelby
THE DATER: Shelby, 26, works in sales for a prominent NYC-based social media company
Originally from Atlanta, Shelby moved to New York almost four years ago and was soon averaging two dates a week off of dating apps. That led to serious burnout. Now that she’s further along in her career and has put down some roots in the city, she’s got less time on her hands for first dates. She's still using Hinge, but gave up on Bumble after finding no success with it — largely because, she admits, she has a “mental block” about making the first move.
THE EXPERT: Los Angeles-based dating coachJulie Spira
Spira is the author of 2009's The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online, which chronicles 250 of her own online dates. She speaks at conferences about the intersection of love and technology and has worked with clients as far afield as London and Sydney. So when asked about the oft-lamented difficulty of dating in New York City, she laughs: “When you’re single, your city is always the hardest city to date in.”
McKenna Pahl
Offer some conversation-starters
Spira tells Shelby to get specific about her activities — in her bio, in her answers to prompts, and in her photos. Bios, in particular, should be “about three to five sentences.” And your profile should easily spark conversation. One way to do this: Include a question in your bio, such as “What’s your favorite team?” or “Can you guess where I am in the fifth photo?”
On Bumble, Shelby mentions that she loves sports. Get granular, Spira says: Which types? What’s her team? Is she watching, or playing? And since a lot of Shelby’s photos depict her in unremarkable locales, Spira advises her to add a travel shot or a photo from a recognizable event, giving potential matches an easy “in” to ask a question or even suggest a related date.
Spira also urged Shelby not to be afraid to include what she's looking for — a relationship.
We’ll say it again: Do make the first move
Until now, Shelby’s online dating strategy has involved very little swiping right. “Being traditionally from the South, I’m used to men being the pursuers,” she says. On Bumble, which requires women to send the first message after a mutual match, she initiated contact halfheartedly, throwing out a blase, “Hey.”
One of Spira’s first tasks: Ditch the “hey" and ask a question that shows you’ve actually looked at the guy's profile: “Love your scuba diving photos! Where were they taken?” Put yourself in his shoes, Spira says. If he’s not responding to every single match, it stands to reason that the “lazy” message in their inbox is the one that will fall by the wayside. You can always let the other person take the lead later, when it comes to asking for a phone number or planning a date.
McKenna Pahl
Vet prospects on the phone
One reason people lose their gusto for dating apps? Too much time and energy wasted on lackluster dates. In the whirl of work, friends, and the general bustle of life in New York City, dating has become another thing for Shelby to wedge onto her calendar. The simple — and refreshingly old-school — solution: Don’t schedule a date with someone unless you’ve already spoken by phone.
“You don’t want to waste time meeting somebody and going, ‘Ugh, no chemistry,’” Spira says. She recommends limiting the chat to 20 minutes. If the match asks to set up a date and you’re not sure how to suggest the feel-out phone call instead, try something like: “If you send me your number, I’d be happy to call and see how the conversation goes.”
SO, DID IT WORK?
“It was a night-and-day difference,” Shelby says. Emboldening herself to make the first move “was really enlightening for me, to switch my mindset.” Now, when she reaches out to someone new, Shelby does it Spira’s way, asking a question tailored to the person’s profile. As a result, her response rate has jumped to “80 or 90 percent.”
And after she provided more detailed answers to more of the questions on Hinge, Shelby saw a significant spike in engagement. Instead of mere photo “likes,” matches are asking about, say, her secret to winning fantasy football in a league of 16 teams. She’s has yet to try Spira’s strategy for vetting potential dates on the phone, but that’s next on her list: Since Shelby travels frequently, she wants a partner who has the social skills necessary to make phone calls work.

For many people, a new year means making a fresh start on the relationship front — whether they're simply looking for someone to talk to, a travel companion or love.
After two years of the coronavirus pandemic, dating habits have changed. More people are dating digitally, using mobile apps and websites, in part spurred on by the pandemic.
Some apps, like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, noted a surge in users at the start of the pandemic. Data tracker Apptopia reported that in July 2021 there were 1.2 million more people using the top 50 dating apps than during the same month the previous year.
But dating when you're over 50 is far different from dating when you're 20. Taking the time to create an engaging online dating profile that contains a well-crafted bio with appealing photographs may make you stand out from the crowd.
Your profile is vital, says San Francisco Bay area dating and relationship coach Maya Diamond, because it says who you are and what kind of relationship you want. “When you're creating that in a thoughtful and intentional way, it can really help you find the right partner,” she adds.
Basic do's and don'ts for dating profiles
Most online dating profiles require your real name and where you live, but nearly all other information is up to you.
One basic rule is to be yourself, online dating experts say. “Don't write what you think people want to hear; write about what matters to you,” says Sophie Watson, spokeswoman for SilverSingles, a dating site exclusively for people age 50-plus. “If you have a quirky hobby or get delighted by something silly, make a reference to it. Chances are there's someone out there who will share your passion."
Top dating profile tips to find love in quarantine
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our love lives in an unprecedented way. While we've previously written about how to deal with loneliness in quarantine, sometimes we still just need to reach out and date. Luckily, recent research shows that online dating during the pandemic isn't half bad. In fact, it's on the rise because we're normalizing what once held a little stigma. The need for social distancing has limited the opportunities for people to meet potential romantic partners in the real world. From data collected between March and May of 2020, Tinder reports that swiping “among members under 25 was up 39%” (Ergun 2020).
But pandemic or not, online dating can be hard. You're constantly wondering which profile picture to choose, stressing over a catchy tagline, and unsure about just how much to disclose. Here are 7 tips to help you refresh your dating profile and optimize for online dating success.
1. Choose The Right App
There are a ton of different apps and websites for online dating. Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble are just a few. You should choose an app depending on what kind of relationship you are looking for. “Tinder has long been perceived as a hook-up app” while “other dating applications and websites that use more complex matching algorithms (e.g. match.com, eHarmony, etc.) might be underlining the idea of a compatibility importance between partners” (Stoicescu 2019).
There are more considerations for those who are in the LGBTQ+ community. Lesbians commonly find men, couples, and heterosexual women after they change their settings to seeking women (Ferris & Duguay 2020). Some specifically LGBTQ+ apps include Her, Chappy, and LGBTQutie.
Try different apps or websites to see which one you like the most and which one aligns best with what you are looking for.
2. Take Time on Your Profile
Once you have chosen an app or a website, the next step is to set up your profile. Your profile is the first impression that someone has of you -- and that means more than just your picture. Take a few extra minutes to proofread your page.
A 2020 study found that “profile owners with profile texts with language errors are rated as less socially and romantically attractive than profile owners with texts without errors” (Van der Zanden, Schouten, Mos, & Krahmer, 2020). Review your profile for any typos if you want to put your best foot forward.
Along with spelling and grammar errors, it has been found that sexually explicit language also has an impact on the potential connection. In a study on managing online dating impressions participants mentioned that they take note of sexually explicit language in profiles because they wanted to connect with people who had similar values (Ellison 2006). Participants viewed sexually explicit language in profiles as an indicator of what the other person was looking for.
Finally, instead of worrying which photo has the best angle of your face, make sure you chose the one that's most clear. Research shows that “profile owners with visible pictures are perceived as physically more attractive than those with blurred pictures” (Van der Zanden et. al 2020). Make sure your picture is easy to see.
Although your profile picture is important, your profile should be more than just a picture. Be sure to include information about yourself. Women who have online dated are also more likely than men to say it was very important to them that the profiles they looked through included a person’s religious beliefs (32% vs. 18%), occupation (27% vs. 8%) or height (22% vs. 8%)” (Vogels 2020).
There was not a big difference in the percentage of men and women who desired others to include their hobbies or if they have children in their profile. 43% of men and 48% of women feel it is important to include if you have children (Vogels 2020). 32% of men and 40% of women find it important to include your hobbies and interests (Vogels 2020).
Overall, you want to give others a sense of who you are as a person. Check your profile for typos, add clear photos, and make sure you are sending out the right message about yourself.
3. Skip The Cheesy Pickup Lines
Are you from Tennessee? Because you're the only 10 I see!
Are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got FINE written all over you.
Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? Because you’re an angel.
We have all heard cheesy pick up lines like this and most of the time they do not work. Research has found that cute-flippant openings (pickup lines that are excessively flirtatious or cliché) are not particularly effective or well-received (Sharabi & Dykstra-DeVette 2019). These pickup lines feel generic and insincere. These pick up lines are often copied and pasted into messages, making it easier to send them to multiple people. These types of interactions do not usually form a genuine connection between people.
Try starting online communication with a simple greeting that is representative of how you actually speak. Saying “Hi [Name], how’s it going?” sounds normal and casual, while keeping it personalized to this person's first name. A low pressure greeting will come across as more sincere. If you still wish to be explicitly flirtatious during the first message, perhaps give a compliment that is specific to what that person wrote in their profile in order to convey genuine interest.
4. Be Direct About What You Want
A 2019 study examined the messages sent to potential romantic partners for people who were online dating. The results demonstrated that “participants who discussed their partner preferences reported a higher likelihood of a second date”. In this study “the partner preferences strategy included descriptions of the characteristics participants desired in a partner” (Sharabi & Dykstra-DeVette 2019).
Pew reports that “among online daters, 72% of women say it was very important to them that the profiles they looked at included the type of relationship the person was looking for, compared with about half of men (53%)” (Vogels 2020). Being honest about who you are interested in and what type of relationship you are looking for is vital to online dating. Communication is always an important aspect in relationships and it is no different for online relationships.
5. Try Video Chatting
With social distancing rules in effect, video chatting is a good way to stay safe while still going on dates. Prior to the global endemic, many people reported being open to video dating but not trying it because of the potential for an awkward experience. Since the start of the pandemic, Hinge reports that video dating is on the rise and “67% of Hinge users told us they found theirvideo date more natural than they thought it would be. Even more surprising is that more than 80% rated their video dates as not at all awkward” (Fein 2019).
Although going on a video date may seem intimidating, it can be a lot of fun. It will probably not be as awkward as you think and you can meet a really nice person. You may even feel more comfortable because you are in your own space instead of going to a new environment. Give video chatting a try next time you connect with a potential romantic partner.
6. Understand What Online Dating is Like
The landscape of in person dating is different from that of online dating. Not all online meetings result in meeting in person and the ones that transition offline vary in relationship type. Research has shown “that of all online daters, 50.7% had gone on an offline date (i.e., arranged a face-to-face meeting), 19.8% had had a sexual relationship (i.e., one-night stand, friends with benefits), and 26.0% had had a (short- or long-term) romantic relationship after having met that person online” (Hallam, De Backer, & Walrave 2019).
Online dating may take determination to find the right person for you. You may have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet your prince.
7. Stay Safe and Have Fun
There are always certain risks associated with online dating. Safety tips from Hinge include never sending money or sharing personal information and meeting in a public place when you decide to meet face-to-face. Be cautious of people who do not seem authentic to you - usually your gut knows best. If you have a bad feeling about someone, play it safe. We hear horror stories like this one every day. Are These Good Online Dating Profile Examples to Copy?
This is always a popular and interesting question. Yes, these are great online dating profile examples. Should you copy them word for word? Probably not. A great online dating profile is one that showcases you and what uniquely makes you—you. If you just cut and paste, you won’t achieve that goal.
That being said, you can certainly use these to copy and make some tweaks to make it unique to you! It’s totally fine if your profile looks fairly similar to these dating profile examples. Not everyone is a writer, which shouldn’t hold you back from finding love.
Can I Use the Same Info on Different Online Dating Apps?
Yes! There’s no rule that you have to use different information on different dating apps. At the end of the day, you’re the same you on every site! The only caveat to this is that you may want to make some slight adjustments if an online dating app is targeting something different. Other than that, though, you can 100% use the exact, word-for-word dating profile on multiple dating apps.
This brings up a second question on whether or not you should be using multiple online dating apps to find what you’re looking for. Absolutely! The more lines you can get in the water, the better your chances of finding exactly what you’re looking for. Here are a few of our favorite online dating apps that you can use to expand your search for that special someone.

Dating Profile About Me Examples
Your dating profile about me section should do three things:
Introduce yourself
Tell a little bit about what you do and like to do
Briefly talk about what you’re looking for
You don’t have to give every single detail of your life or give a massive checklist for what you need. As you’ll see in these dating profile about me examples, they’re simple, short, sweet, and straight to the point. The idea is just to arouse enough interest for someone to send you a message or a flirt to start the conversation where you can get to know each other better.
Here are some great About Me dating profile examples.
Example 1
Hi! My name is Mark, and I am brand new to online dating. While I’m still figuring this all out, here’s something I know for sure—I’m excited to be here! The chance to meet unique, engaging, and interesting women is pretty dang neat. If you think you might fit that mold, drop me a message.
I work in the finance industry. And while I like to work hard, I make sure to leave time to enjoy life. I’m a fan of wine, movies, hiking, and getting out of town for the weekend. Let’s chat and see if maybe we’re a good fit!
Example 2
Isn’t online dating a blast? Okay, maybe it can be challenging at times, but it’s still exciting that you have the chance to meet someone special who you might have never met elsewhere.
My name’s Sarah! I’m a proud dog mom, an avid gym-goer, and, if you ask my friends, a bit quirky at times. I’m looking for a man who compliments my life and is ready to enjoy all that this world has to bring to the table. If you think we might be a good match, send me a message.
Example 3
My name is Beth and if I had to pick three words to describe me they would be positive, a little shy, and someone who loves to laugh. Okay, that was a few more than three words, but it’s fun to break the rules from time to time, right?
I’m new to online dating, but I know what I’m looking for in a man. My Christian faith is important to me, so I want to find a man who feels the same way. Additionally, I’m really into movies, so a guy who likes to cuddle up on the couch instead of going out on a Friday night is the right match for me.
If you think maybe we could be right for each other, send me a message! I’m kind of shy, but if you reach out, I come out of my shell.
Example 4
Hi, I’m Ted! Thanks for stopping by my online dating profile. I’m not the best at describing myself, so I reached out to a few friends and asked them to tell me what I’m like so I could share that with you. Here’s what they had to say.
Ted is driven, goal-oriented, and goes after what he wants in life.
Ted is a real catch. He’s caring, dependable, and someone who could really be your rock.
If you want to see if my friends are right or they’re just telling me what I want to hear (kidding), we should chat! Send me a message and let’s start the conversation..
Do these about me examples work for short bio examples too?
Yes! Even if the section isn’t explicitly called “About Me,” these descriptions of who who are work as a fantastic dating profile template. As long as the section is a spot for you to talk about who you are and what you’re looking for, these short dating profile examples will work well.
Things NOT to Put In Your Online Dating Profile: Bad Examples
Writing the best online dating profile is as much about what you put in your profile as it is about what you choose to leave out. Here are a few things you should never include in your online dating profile. Some of these things should be omitted for safety reasons, some because they aren’t helpful, and some because they’re so overdone.
Never include personally identifiable information. You can share contact information or specific information about things like where you work or where you live after you start a conversation and get to know someone. But you don’t want those things shared with everyone on an online dating site.
Don’t talk about how you hate talking about yourself. EVERYONE and their mother mention how awkward online dating is and how much they hate talking about themselves in their profile. If it weren’t so overused, it would be something nice to add to your profile. But for the sake of success, leave it out. The only instance where you might be able to hint at it is if you do something like we showed in About Me Example 4 where you get quotes from friends.
Don’t talk about your exes. Here’s an example of a terrible online dating profile. All this does is signal to good men or women that you may have past issues you haven’t worked through yet.
Hi, I’m Shelly and I am looking for a real man. My ex was a piece of garbage and didn’t know how to treat me right. He used to say mean things to me and never respected me. If you are different than that, hit me up, but not if you’re a piece of garbage like he was.
The Goal of Your Dating Profile Sections
As you can see in these dating profile examples, everything is fairly short and simple. Here’s why. The goal is not to tell someone everything about you or everything you’re looking for. The goal is to get to the conversation part of the process where you can start to get to know each other.
The goal of the dating profile headline is to get them to click on your profile to read your About Me section.
Once you get them to your About Me section, the only goal is to get them interested and informed enough to send you a message.
From there, it’s just a conversation to start to see if they’re someone you might be interested in getting to know more 🙂

Creating an online dating profile can be daunting. After all, it’s not always easy to big yourself up without sounding conceited or, even worse, desperate.
But did you know: one in three couples now find love online? Yes, really.
In this fast-paced, social media-dependent world, the Internet is used for everything – even more so now thanks to Covid-19. From keeping in touch with old school friends, to career networking, to ordering takeaways, to finding a cat-sitter for that weekend away…. you know, all sorts. So it only seems logical you would use the good old Internet for finding that special someone, too.
Whether you’re keen to try online dating sites or are more of an app kind of person (hello, Hinge), let our expert-advice steer you clear of making any dating app turn offs.
With the help of Charly Lester, co-founder of Lumen dating app, you’ll be able to perfect your profile game in no time (and ditch these seriously infuriating dating trends once and for all).

How to write a dating profile
1. Ask your friends for help
Get a friend to help you write your profile. Sometimes they know you better than you know yourself.
2. Avoid clichés
Even if you do like ‘walking on the beach’ or ‘drinking wine in front of a roaring fire’, leave it out – everyone says that. Think of something interesting that could be a conversation starter.
3. Look at other profiles
‘If you struggle for inspiration, why not look at a selection of profiles to see what other people are saying?’ suggests Lester. ‘Reading a variety might give you ideas for things to include in your own one.’
4. Choose action shots
Wouldn’t you know, apparently profile photos that demonstrate you playing your guitar or downhill skiing – even if your face isn’t showing – get more messages.
5. Stay positive
Avoid negative tones and always be positive about yourself. Your profile is essentially your dating CV. You wouldn’t want a future employer to read anything negative, so why would you want a potential partner to read anything that isn’t positive?
Credit: Love is Blind
6. Be honest
Lying doesn’t get you anywhere in the dating world. Think about how hurt you’d be if someone you were dating lied to you. Honesty is the best policy.
7. Be specific
Use specific examples when you’re talking to make sure you give a full flavour of who you are. If you love travelling, say where your favourite place is and why. Anything concrete like this brings you alive to anyone reading.
8. Update regularly
Keep your profile up to date. Make the effort to renew your profile on a regular basis with relevant information about yourself.
9. Check your grammar
Many people find poor grammar and spelling a turn off, and the best of us can make mistakes, so be careful on this point. If you’re not a naturally good speller, let AutoCorrect do the hard work for you.
10. Say cheese
A poll found that 96% of people prefer seeing a big, happy smile in a profile photo than a sexy pout. Interesting…
11. Choose recent photos
If they are more than a year old, don’t use them. One of the most frequent complaints about online dating profiles is ‘they may have looked like that once but they certainly don’t look like that now’. Looking better in the flesh is better than the reverse.
12. Show them the real you
‘It’s been proven that the more photos you have on your profile, the more attention it will get,’ says Lester. ‘So make the most of that. Include at least a couple of clear head shots, where you’re not wearing sunglasses and you can clearly see your face. I always include at least one full length photo too, so there are no surprises when we meet up in real life.’
13. Have fun
Most people want to find someone who can make them laugh, so show people you have a sense of humour. If you can make someone laugh, it’s a great icebreaker and could get your conversation off to a great start.
14. Be the focus
Don’t choose a picture where you are not the main focal point.
15. Think outside of the box
‘If a dating profile asks what you’re looking for, don’t give too much detail. Tell them about the type of relationship you’re looking for, and if you have set deal-breakers like ‘must like dogs’. But when it comes to things like height, weight, income, hair colour etc – there is no point listing these things,’ explains Lester.
‘Firstly, it can make you look too unapproachable, even to someone who ticks all the right boxes. And secondly, you’ll be surprised how often people fall for someone who doesn’t tick any of their original boxes.’

How to spot a good date
1. No negativity
If someone mentions anything cynical about relationships or comments about their ‘annoying’ ex, move along. Say their partner cheated – sure, knowing how to cope with being cheated on can be hard, you don’t need the baggage attached that comes with dating someone who’s still angry or grieving.
2. No arrogance
Avoid Mr ‘It’s All About Me’. It’s good to love yourself but there is a line that should not be crossed.
3. Check their photos
Are they in a bar or nightclub in every shot? If so, don’t contact them if you’re someone who likes to be in bed by 9pm. Late night dates a bit of you? You might want to head to one of London’s best rooftop bars together.
4. No waffling
A long and very detailed profile could be an indication of what’s in store when you meet them in person. Nobody likes a waffler.
5. Kindness is key
Look for people with a good character. A profile that mentions family and friends, volunteering, and enjoying spending time with kids is a good sign.

How to Create the Perfect Dating Profile During COVID
DEAR DR. JENN,
I am newly single and just joined a few dating apps. This pandemic has made me realize I would really like to find my soulmate, but I feel clueless when it comes to setting up my dating profile to find the right guy — how much is too much to put out there? What kinds of photos should I use? On top of it all, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to social distancing and going out, so I feel like I need to choose my suitors carefully. All of it is giving me a lot of stress. Where do I start? —Looking for Love In the Time of Coronavirus
DEAR LOOKING,
Many relationships have become a casualty of the virus — just look at all the celeb breakups in the past few months. The good news is that the online dating world is more active than ever right now. (Recently, Match Group which owns Tinder, OK Cupid, Hinge, and Match, reported a surge in new subscribers.)
While the virus has changed the way we are dating, courting, and getting to know each other, if you play your social distancing cards right, this could actually be an ideal time to meet your mate. The virus has forced us to really spend the time getting to know each other before taking the risk of a socially distanced, masked date, and it's also put the idea of getting physical too soon off the table. In other words, someone has really got to be special. This all works to your benefit, especially coming off of a breakup.

So, dating apps: Some are more known as hook-up sites, whereas others are more geared towards people looking for a relationship. Do a little homework about the sites you're on (by asking other single friends or good old Google), to make sure they cater to the type of relationship you are looking for. Once you determine you are working with legit relationship-oriented sites, it's time to hone your profile skills.
Here is what I recommend for setting up your dating profile and finding success with online dating.
1. Mention Your Quarantine Status
A new dating profile trend is actually listing your viral or antibody status. Much like a guy advertising in his bio that he's completely clean of STDs, this information coming from a stranger probably shouldn't be trusted. Plus, not only is the accuracy of antibody tests still under question, but a positive COVID test result isn't always a guarantee. (You can be tested for COVID on Monday and then pick up the virus on Tuesday and walk around thinking you are negative.)
So while I don't recommend sharing viral status info, I would recommend sharing your quarantine status. You want to find someone who is on the same page as you — and is prepared for a long drawn out courtship before there might be any physical contact or even a distanced date. Sharing this information will help to keep expectations in line and also screen for compatibility.

2. Include the *Right* Kinds of Photos
Dating apps are a highly visual medium for dating where decisions happen quickly. Having the right number of quality photos (between three and five) that are eye-catching and attract the kind of partner you are hoping to find are key. According to Lauren Frances, an online dating consultant and author of Dating, Mating & Manhandling: The Ornithological Guide to Men, “Having current, clear, and alluring photos are the number one secret to success. Fuzzy, out of date, and ‘moody’ pics are a no-no.” If it's been a while since you were on the apps, be sure to change up your photos to reflect who you are today.
Here, some other types of photos to avoid on your dating profile.
Nix the selfies, which can come across as too narcissistic.
Don't wear sunglasses in your shots. Corny as it sounds, eyes are the windows to the soul and sunglasses can look as though you're hiding something.
Avoid bikini shots, unless you're just looking to hook up.
Avoid group shots. It's important to make it easy for him to see you and get excited about you. In this fast dating world, people don’t take the time to figure out which one you are — they just swipe left.
Don’t include shots of you with people that could be mistaken for a boyfriend or girlfriend. (I don’t care how much you love your brother. Keep him out of the shot.)
Ditto for shots where you clearly cropped your ex out of the shot. Yes, we all have a relationship history but we don’t need to see the arm of the person that was there before us.
Don’t include pets in your shots, as much as you may love them. You should be the focus, not your cute puppy.
So, what does that leave? Focus on shots that show off your interests. For example, if you are a runner, include one of you crossing the finish line. Not only will this attract potential partners with similar interests, but it also gives suitors an easy conversation starter.

3. Use Your Dating Profile As an Ice-Breaker
Even the most experienced and active daters are a little nervous the first time they reach out to someone. Make it easy. Give lots of easy conversation starters in your profile. The words you use reveal a lot about who you are and can serve as door openers. Use them wisely.
You can also use your dating profile to ask an ice-breaker. “I am working my way through Los Angeles takeout, what’s your fav?” Mention a movie you've been wanting to see or a band you love so they have an opening.
4. Focus on the Positive
On dating apps and sites, people are looking to keep it light and fun, even in a pandemic. This is not the time or the place to bare your soul. Keep text short and light and get straight to the point. A divorced male friend of mine once wrote a dating profile that basically described what went wrong in his marriage. (“I don’t want someone who is going to lie, cheat or use me for my money,” he wrote.) Learn from his mistake and keep talk of exes out of your profile.
Be positive and create a visual. Talk about what you like, not what you don’t like. “I hate camping and the outdoors,” just sounds negative, even if it is true. “I love sharing a good movie and making new pasta dishes,” sounds fun and creates a vision of a date, or even a life together. This is the time to really showcase your personality. Instead of saying you're adventurous, share about the time you jumped out of a plane. Bonus points for corresponding photos.
5. State Your Romantic Goals
Are you looking for a hookup? (Let it be known, I do not recommend this in a pandemic... you are safer getting cozy with your vibrator). A long-term relationship? A husband? State what you want. According to Frances, “If you don’t want hookups, and are looking for LTR’s, or marriage and families, state that. You DO want to scare the wrong men off, and they’ll just move on to the next girl.”
Some women worry about sounding desperate, but you can state these goals without sounding needy. The right man who is ready for those things is going to respond well to them. Make sure that your photos are aligned with your romantic goals. If you're looking for a husband, maybe don’t post a picture of you dancing on the table at your best friend's bachelorette party. Even if you look hot, this might be a turn-off to a man who is looking to settle down.

6. Screen Well — and Trust Your Instincts
My advice with dating apps is to cast a wide net and then develop the savvy to weed through interested parties and screen for compatibility. Online dating is a numbers game. You are guaranteed to get a high ratio of frogs to princes, but it's important to get rid of potential suitors who do not align with your goals — and to do it quickly. If you’re looking for a relationship, you can immediately eliminate anyone who makes sexual innuendos or asked for naked pictures/bikini shots right off the bat. Look for men who are showing interest in the unique things you have posted in your profile, and avoid the guys who send standard cut/paste responses to every girl he matches with. Look for people who ask questions about you and are forthcoming about themselves. These are more likely to be people who are putting thought and care into their dating life.
RELATED: Coronavirus May Actually Change Online Dating for the Better
Once you have a match that interests you, start with text messaging. If things are going well, move to the phone or to an online date. Speaking on the phone gives you a better sense of who they are, what their energy is like, and if you have a rapport. Once you are speaking on the phone, trust your instinct. If someone doesn’t sound like a good match, sounds creepy or you just have a gut feeling, listen to that. Too many women don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings or feel a sense of scarcity so they go on a date that their instinct told them not to. This can be dangerous, and at the very least, a poor use of your limited dating time.
As your inbox fills up and you start to get excited about fresh new candidates, make sure that you stay true to your health and safety philosophy. Do not let anyone push you into meeting in person. Make sure you decide on what your dating protocol will be in advance so you have clarity and keep yourself safe.

7 Easy Steps for the Perfect Online Dating Profile
There are dating sites for every type of online dating persona, but what do you do about those dreaded dating profiles? You might be looking to find your perfect match or just get a date. Either way, if you want to set yourself up for success with online dating, and part of that success is creating the best dating profile possible. In this blog post we will discuss seven easy steps for creating the ultimate dating profile!
Now, a lot of this will depend on what you are looking for and which dating app you use. Apps that only show one photo like Tinder or Hinge need a different strategy than ones that show many people like Lantern. First, you need to figure out what dating app is best for your needs. If you want a dating website that caters specifically to people in the same faith as yourself or share similar hobbies and interests with someone of the opposite sex then it might be worth investing some time into researching sites that are tailored just for them.
Check out our Ultimate List of Every Dating App article that breaks it down into ten different categories:
Now, let's get to building a great online dating profile!
Step One: About You
Start with a clear and concise introduction of yourself at the top of your dating profile. Avoid using cliches like "I enjoy the outdoors" or "I love traveling." Try something more personal, like what you do in your free time, your favorite movie or something that really defines you. You could say that you are an avid reader who loves nothing better than being curled up on the couch with a good book, effective online dating profiles. Or maybe you're someone who prefers to be active and spends their weekends running marathons, hiking mountains or practicing yoga?
Use an attention grabbing headline about you: "I like to buy lobsters at restaurants and then set them free in the ocean" style
Write about yourself briefly without any cliche phrases.
Add hobbies and ways you like to spend your time - or use Lantern Dating App which matches you based on your hobbies and preferences.
Include a quote from your favorite author or tastemaker to show how worldy and sophisticated you are and that you def don't each Cheetos in sweatpants at nights.
But seriously, adding something personal about yourself into your dating profile, like a beautiful piece of literature that captures who you are as a person, effective online dating profiles, will allow others reading profiles an inside look into what makes up your personality. It's also shows another side to your personality which is always good in dating and makes it easier for people to talk to you when they message your dating profile!
Step Two: Photos
Photos that Get Attention to your online dating profile have made it easier for people looking for long term relationships as well as hookups, but there's an art to finding the right dating profile pictures.
Ask Friends Which is a Great Photo of You
We are not great judges of our photos especially how to be successful with online dating It comes to our dating profiles. We want to show the world that we look one way but meanwhile we look way better in a different photo. Online dating is all about appealing to the right person for you. So using a photo your friends feel makes you look good is a great way toward that goal.
Additional Photo Tips
Good lighting is the most important element in a photo. Make sure your lighting is bright which shows you are open and not hiding anything.
No sunglasses as your primary dating profile photo. Makes sure your face is clearly visible.
Do not post a selfie. Make sure it's a photo taken by another person. It seems silly but this shows you have friends willing to take time out of their day to take your photo. It's a subtle but important indicator to others that you have social proof, effective online dating profiles.
Make sure the photo is recent.
Avoid posing in any online dating profile. Dating apps keep telling you to do different poses and faces but the best is to be natural and in the middle of doing something you love, effective online dating profiles.
Add at least 3 photos (or make sure to hook up your instagram account if the dating app has that option).
Use different photos for different dating apps depending on what you are trying to achieve. One dating app is focused on quick sex while another is focused on looking for love so obviously those effective online dating profiles be different styles.
Use dating profile photos that show your positive personality. At Lantern our favorite one is a young man with his dog and the dog is laying in his arms and you can just see the happiness between them. His profile gets a lot of love.
Step Three: Don't Be Afraid effective online dating profiles be Yourself
Is there a part of you you're afraid to show on your dating profile because you think people will make fun of you or think badly? Now is the time to yell it from the rooftops (or more like yell it from your online dating profile)! The funny thing is those things we think will scare away a long term partner is the exact thing that will draw the right person in.
Aka if you show who you really are, your online dating profile can actually help find you somebody who actually likes the weirdest parts of you. (A good rule of thumb with weirdness though is don't be sexual. Sexual on dating apps is never good until you really have been talking to someone for a minute. If you think it's being sexual it probably is and switch that for something else weird about you, like your love for eating ginger plain or the fact that you love listening to opera.)
Step Four: Build A Positive Dating Apps Profile
The best online dating profile is one filled with positive attitudes. Put yourself out there without being too negative (unless it's that dry humor) - remember that people can feel how much they like someone by reading their dating profile!
No matter what type of person you are looking for, effective online dating profiles, be effective online dating profiles of who you are as well as everything that makes up who you want to meet.
Step Five: Make Sure Your Online Dating Profile Says What You're Looking For
You might be looking for love, a quick hook up or some serious dating but don't leave someone guessing about your dating profile. If you are interested in something more than just meeting some new people on the effective online dating profiles app, then make sure to let it known from your dating profile what you want and what not. Otherwise we can end up with an awkward conversation when one of us is disappointed about where this could go while the other person was thinking that's exactly what they wanted too!
The best way to avoid this situation is by being clear upfront so there aren't any misunderstandings later on down the line. (Unless you really do just wanna meet new friends - which is cool!)
Step Six: Keep Dating Safe Online
Dating Apps are a great way to meet new potential partners - just make sure you do it safely! When meeting someone from an online dating site in real life there should always be a friend with you as well as never going alone. Meeting up at crowded places like coffee shops will also give everyone more anonymity which means less chance of being threatened physically. Remember that dangers exist both online and offline dating so always be cautious.
- Meet in public places
- Bring a friend with you when meeting online dating partners
- Take all of the necessary precautions for safety, whether it's talking to someone online or meeting them face to face
- Practice good effective online dating profiles when it comes to privacy on apps by not giving out too much personal information past what's on your profile and being careful about who you approve as a friend.
Make sure to read this article we wrote on "Safe Online Dating Practices". It gives some top effective online dating profiles tips and tricks including some by a retired FBI Female Agent!
Step Seven: Keep Your Online Dating Profile Up To Date
Ok, this isn't really thaaaat important and in a world where you have four or five dating apps on your phone, updating stuff constantly is a little silly. Still, whichever your primary app is, try to keep it updated. This will keep people who are looking for something similar in their lives (whether it is love, friends, or even a hook up) interested and curious about the best way to contact you.
Conclusion
We hope that this gives you some ideas for crafting the best online dating profiles possible! This is just a general dating guide - make sure to spend time going through other dating profiles and think about what makes them effective before starting your own.
If it weren’t so overused, it would be something nice to add to your profile, effective online dating profiles. But for the sake of success, leave it effective online dating profiles.

What’s the headline for those of you that are newbies? Your headline is the “catchphrase” that you get to put at the very top of your profile.
On many dating sites, it’s the first thing that people see outside of your username and your main picture.

Because you’re limited in the space you have, this can be challenging.
Here are a few ideas of angles dating as a black male can take to come up with the perfect headline FOR YOU. Remember, the headline has to be specific to you. Finding “the best” headline won’t do you any good if it doesn’t say much about who you are.
Quotes
You really can’t go wrong with using a quote as your dating site headline. Yes, a lot of people go this angle, but that’s because it’s a great angle to go. If you’re worried about originality, be original in the quote you effective online dating profiles. Don’t use something super popular unless you want people to know you’re a fan of something.
For example, let’s say that you want people to know you’re a funny guy or gal and you’re a fan of effective online dating profiles comedy movies. This could be effective online dating profiles header:
I swear to God I’ll pistol whip effective online dating profiles next guy who says “Shenanigans.”
If you aren’t aware, this is from the hilarious comedy Super Troopers. Using this as your headline accomplishes a few things. It shows you’ve got a sense of humor, it shows you love to watch good movies, and it acts as a filter to weed out some people you might not click with. If people aren’t on the same comedy wavelength as you, they probably won’t be interested in your headline. You won’t mesh well with these people anyway, so it’s going to save you some time.
In addition to comedy, you can go the angle of determined or hardworking. If you are someone who is a hustler or really gets after life, this might be a great spot to showcase your determination and drive with a quote.
A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.
It doesn’t even matter if the singles looking at your dating profile headline have ever heard that quote before (it’s from Colin Powell). What it quickly demonstrates is that you are a go-getter with a lot of passion and who isn’t afraid to commit to getting what you want in life. These are all great traits to showcase.
You can also go the romantic route if you want. If you’re a hopeless romantic who is all about the warm and fuzzies, go ahead and put a romantic quote in your headline. In reality, you can use any quote you want in your headline. Just make sure that you ask yourself what the quote is portraying and if that is the correct image you want to give off about yourself.
You + What You’re Looking For effective online dating profiles Successful Headline
Don’t worry; this isn’t a math problem. What this is showing is a simple and fool-proof formula effective online dating profiles come up with a headline that will convert. By convert, we mean getting the right people to click through and read your profile. You start the headline off with who you are and then end with what you are looking for.
Here’s the spin, though. You want to leave things a little mysterious. You don’t want it to sound like a missing person’s report or be too direct. You want it to intrigue and get people to wonder more about you.
The second part should also be left a little mysterious so that people reading it can interpret it how they want.
People have a big tendency to interpret things they read to be about themselves. In your dating profile headline, this is great because they’ll assume they are what you’re looking for.
Here are some examples:
Well-traveled man looking for a partner in crime
Inspirational girl in search of a man who can inspire
A funny guy who needs someone who loves to laugh until they snort
Driven girl looking for someone to have fun with
Make sure that you are not selling yourself short in your headline. Don’t call yourself an “ordinary girl” or “just a guy” or anything like that. While this isn’t about selling yourself, you do need to get people to read your profile so they can see how awesome you are. That’s going to require you to sell yourself a bit.
If you honestly have no redeeming qualities and are plain and boring, you may want to work on yourself a bit before you start dating online. We’re pretty sure that no one is that boring, though—yes, even you.

We get it: Dating isn't exactly easy these days. In 2019, we're busy, we're stressed, and we're constantly faced with a myriad of distractions that can make wading into the dating pool seem like getting drowned in a raging sea. While some folks are opting out altogether, the brave souls who want to meet someone are faced with an increasing number of ways to do so, effective online dating profiles. Dating apps? Matchmakers? Speed dating? Introducing yourself to a cutie at the bar? Many of us are exhausted just thinking about it. So yes, dating is a lot, and it's clear we could all use a little insight (and commiseration) about the whole process. That's why Shondaland decided to take a 360-degree look at the state of dating today, effective online dating profiles, from the struggles and the successes to how we're meeting new people — dating apps, DMs, and more — or how we're sometimes, well, not.
If you’re dating in 2019, chances are you’re using an app. Maybe you’re using multiple apps. And that process, as many of us know, can be, well, a drag. Shondaland.com wants to help ease the pain with a deep dive into the nitty gritty of online-dating profiles. Our hope? To not only make your profiles smarter, sexier and shinier, but to ensure that when and if you do get a match, it's going to be the kind of person you actually want to go on a date with. Thus, we matched three women with three seasoned online-matchmaking experts to find out: What makes the perfect profile?
The State of the Date
Yes, There Is A "Good" Way to Break Up, According to Experts
My Friends Are Marrying People They Met on Tinder — and Frankly It’s Gaslighting Me
Data Convinced Me I'd Never Get Married. It Was Wrong
Volume One: Colleen
THE DATER: Colleen, 25, a wholesale manager for a beauty brand based in the South
For five-plus years, Colleen has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the standard trio of dating apps: Hinge, Bumble, Tinder. So far, she says most of her matches have felt like “a what do guys look for in dating profiles of time.” Her inbox is stacked with “Hey” after “Hey” from bland guys with whom she has zero chemistry, and who rarely engage her in conversations about her own interests.
“You could get a lot of messages, effective online dating profiles, but if they’re a lot of the wrong messages, or you’re not [going] on dates with the right kind of people, then it feels exhausting, frustrating and overwhelming,” Hoffman says.
We asked Hoffman to review Colleen’s profile and come up with actionable tips that will help this “meh” dater find an authentic connection.
McKenna Pahl
Decide what (and who) you want, effective online dating profiles, and build a profile that reflects it
Exhibit A: Colleen says her Hinge matches are “all over the place" — she attracts a broad range of guys with seemingly no common denominator.
Hoffman chalks that up to a profile that doesn’t accurately portray what Colleen’s looking for: a real relationship — i.e., not flings or on-again, off-again flirtations — with someone who makes her laugh.
Step one: Think about the message your photos are sending, effective online dating profiles.
Hoffman’s advice: switch to something more subtle, effective online dating profiles, and cut down on photos that feature alcohol to lessen the profile's "party vibe."
Colleen effective online dating profiles her wit and sports knowledge on Hinge’s “When was the last effective online dating profiles you cried?” question: she answered with, "a football game." But Hoffman found answers to two other profile questions confusing.
Colleen tweaked her profile according to Hoffman’s suggestions, resulting in a version she feels is now more authentic and a better representation of who she is, effective online dating profiles.
Before, Colleen received a lot of generic messages, now she sees an uptick in guys sending jokes, witty comments, and even some original effective online dating profiles lines.
And her recent matches barely spark her interest, effective online dating profiles.
THE EXPERT: Erika Ettin, founder of online dating consultancyA Little Nudge
When Washington, D.C.-based Ettin first tried online dating in 2001, she put her background in economics and finance to work crafting her profile, even tracking her results in a spreadsheet. She experimented with effective online dating profiles strategies until she was receiving responses to six out of 10 of the messages she was sending and had hit a message-to-date conversion rate of 50 percent, effective online dating profiles. In 2011, she went pro and founded her consulting company, which has helped more than 1,000 clients.
Ettin gives Madison’s profile a tune-up, effective online dating profiles, offering tips to avoid online dating burnout, stay organized, and attract the types she wants to meet.
Make sure the spotlight is on you — and only effective online dating profiles
“I want people to know Effective online dating profiles have friends,” said Madison, echoing a common dating app concern. But according to Ettin, potential matches are more interested in checking out your appearance and gauging your personality than analyzing your social life. effective online dating profiles Pahl
Accentuate the positive
To this profile prompt, effective online dating profiles, “I’ll know I’ve found the one when…,” Madison replied, “We plan our joint campaigns.” Ettin loved that.
Shortly after she reworked her profile with solo shots and upbeat language, Madison started getting more matches with guys who seem more engaged
and were definitely more attractive."The matches I’m getting are responding to my question/answer sections of my profile more than ever before, effective online dating profiles, and if I’m not replying back right away, a lot of them are following up," she says.
That led to serious burnout, effective online dating profiles.
Get granular, effective online dating profiles, Spira says: Which types? What’s her team? Is she watching, or playing? And since a lot of Shelby’s photos depict her in unremarkable locales, Spira advises her to add a travel shot or a photo from a recognizable event, giving potential matches an easy “in” to ask a question or even suggest a related date.
Spira also urged Shelby not to be afraid to include what she's looking for — a relationship.
We’ll say it again: Do make the first move
Until now, effective online dating profiles, Shelby’s online dating strategy has involved very little swiping right.
If he’s not responding to every single match, effective online dating profiles, it stands to reason that the “lazy” message in their inbox is the one that will fall by the wayside.
Emboldening herself to effective online dating profiles the first move “was really enlightening for me, to switch my mindset.” Now, effective online dating profiles, when she reaches out to someone new, Shelby does it Spira’s way, asking a question tailored to the person’s profile. As a result, her response rate has jumped to “80 or 90 percent.”
And after she provided more detailed answers to more of the questions on Hinge, Shelby saw a significant spike in engagement. Instead of mere photo “likes,” matches are asking about, effective online dating profiles, say, her secret to winning fantasy football in a league of 16 teams. She’s has yet to try Spira’s strategy for vetting potential dates on the phone, but that’s next on her list: Since Shelby travels frequently, she wants a partner who has the social skills necessary to make phone calls work, effective online dating profiles.

Self Deprecating & Funny Dating Profile Example
Ok… so let’s start:
I’d like first to apologize for the typos I might have… I must confess I’m French (I know… nobody’s perfect) and I’m pretty much new in this country (I’ve been around for 2 years).
I thought I would throw some keywords that would describe what I like to do. If you recognize yourself in some of them, I think it might be worth taking the time to keep on reading my profile. If you don’t keep on reading, I swear I won’t be upset with you. I will never know anyway 🙂
Travel, surprises, music, dancing, sports, books, last minute plans, open mind, photography, museum, craziness, spontaneity, going out (but also staying in), sharing, simplicity, respect, effective online dating profiles, flip flops (yes, the sandals), down to earth (however fantasy is also very important), people, casual, word, effective online dating profiles, news, work, sense of humor about yourself, awareness.
And yet another short list of things that I’m not really fond of: – Cars (can’t tell why I put this one first…) – Self-centered people (but, hey… Have you ever heard anybody saying “yes, yes, effective online dating profiles, I am definitely self-centered.” So this one doesn’t really count!!) – TV (even if I like one or two shows and some movies) – Superficial people (but same problem as #2…)
In addition, if you happen to pronounce the following sentences regularly, we’re definitely increasing the chance of a good match effective online dating profiles “Ok let’s give it a try” “To be honest, I don’t know” “I respect that” “J’adore les escargots” ok this one doesn’t really count either… 🙂
And last (I promise), effective online dating profiles, if you think that Paris is the most beautiful city in the world, I think you should tell our parents to get ready for the wedding 🙂
I am crazy, stupid, and charming.
Time for Francesca Cruz to dating apps in boston over, giving you a woman's perspective on this dating profile:

Top dating profile tips to find love in quarantine
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our love lives in an unprecedented way. While we've previously written about how to deal with loneliness in quarantine, sometimes we still just need to reach out and date. Luckily, recent research shows that online dating during the pandemic isn't half bad. In fact, it's on the rise because we're normalizing what once held a little stigma. The need for social distancing has limited the opportunities for people to meet potential romantic partners in the real world. From data collected between March and May of 2020, Tinder reports that swiping “among members under 25 was up 39%” (Ergun 2020), effective online dating profiles.
You should choose an app depending on what kind of relationship you are looking for. effective online dating profiles has long been perceived as a hook-up app” while “other dating applications and websites that use more complex matching algorithms (e.g. match.com, eHarmony, effective online dating profiles, etc.) might be underlining the idea of a compatibility importance between partners” (Stoicescu 2019).
There are more considerations for those who are in the LGBTQ+ community. Lesbians commonly find men, couples, and heterosexual women after they change their settings to seeking women (Ferris & Duguay 2020), effective online dating profiles.
A 2020 study found that “profile owners with profile texts with language errors are rated as less socially and romantically attractive than profile owners with texts without errors” (Van der Zanden, Schouten, effective online dating profiles, Mos, & Krahmer, 2020). Review your profile for any typos if you want to put your best foot forward.
Along with spelling and grammar errors, it has been found that sexually explicit language also has an impact on the potential connection. In a study on managing what spontaneous questions to ask the guy you dating dating impressions participants mentioned that they take note of sexually explicit language in profiles because they wanted to connect with people who had similar values (Ellison 2006).
Although your profile picture is important, effective online dating profiles, your profile should be more than just a picture.
32% of men and 40% of women find it important to include effective online dating profileshobbies and interests (Vogels 2020).
Overall, you want to give others a sense of who you are as a person, effective online dating profiles.
Research has found that cute-flippant openings (pickup lines that are excessively flirtatious or cliché) are not particularly effective online dating profiles or well-received (Sharabi & Dykstra-DeVette 2019). These pickup lines feel generic and insincere, effective online dating profiles. These pick up lines are often copied and pasted into messages, making it easier to send them to multiple people. These types of interactions do not usually form a genuine connection between people.
Try starting online communication with a simple greeting that is representative of how you actually speak. Saying “Hi [Name], how’s it going?” sounds normal and casual, effective online dating profiles, while keeping it personalized to this person's first name.
Pew reports that “among online daters, 72% of women say it was very important to them effective online dating profiles the profiles they looked at included the type of relationship the person was looking for, compared with about half of men (53%)” (Vogels 2020). Being honest about who you are interested in and what type of relationship you are looking for is vital to online dating. Communication effective online dating profiles always an important aspect in relationships and it is no different for online relationships.
5. Try Video Chatting
With social distancing rules in effect, video chatting is a good way to stay safe dating apps that dont suck still going on dates.
6. Understand What Online Dating is Like
The landscape of in dating for widows over 50 dating is different from that of online dating.
